Time Travel Romance

About the Book:

May Gold, college adjunct, often dreams about the subject of her master’s thesis - Gianlorenzo Bernini. In her fantasies she’s in his arms, the wildly adored partner of the man who invented the Baroque.

But in reality, May has just landed in Rome with her teaching colleagues and older boyfriend who is paying her way. She yearns to unleash her passion and creative spirit, and when the floor under the gilded dome of St Peter’s basilica rocks under her feet, she gets her chance. Walking through the veil that appears, she finds herself in the year 1624, staring straight into Bernini’s eyes. Their immediate and powerful attraction grows throughout May’s tour of Italy. And as she continues to meet her ethereal partner, even for brief snatches of time, her creativity and confidence blossom. All the doorways to happiness seem blocked for May-all except the shimmering doorway to Bernini’s world.

May has to choose: stay in her safe but stagnant existence, or take a risk. Will May’s adventure in time ruin her life or lead to a magical new one?

Read an Excerpt from The Renaissance Club:

THE RENAISSANCE CLUB by RACHEL DACUS – EXCERPT from Chapter 29

May was hardly back in the room when Darren called and asked her to join him at dinner. When she arrived, May was relieved to see him sitting with Daphne and Becca. There was no way she could confront him now. He was quiet at the meal, letting Becca expound on how the theatricality of the Baroque, as opposed to the Renaissance, was so very Shakespearean. As the dinner plates were cleared, Daphne insisted on taking photographs, with each standing up to photograph the other three.
Becca and Daphne then surprised May by skipping dessert and leaving.
She had to ask Darren now. It was the only time she could, and after simmering with the knowledge throughout dinner, she had a drumbeat of “Why did you do it?” on her brain.
“Darren, why did you tell Norman to fire me?”
Darren seemed very surprised. “Who told you that—was it Norman? He must be confused. I told him you were thinking of trying different things, and might want a lighter load next semester.”
So, Darren had taken her offhand and stupid remark and told Norman to reduce or even eliminate her class hours.
He rushed to justify. “I said I could take care of any classes you didn’t want to pick up. Norman’s the one who got it blown out of proportion.”
“Why was it your job to tell him something I was just considering briefly? I barely make a living as it is. I need those hours.”
She could hardly look him in the eyes. This was so meddlesome and overbearing. He was used to telling her how things would be, but this was invading her decision-making. Her headache and stuffy nose suddenly overwhelmed her. Maybe it really was a misunderstanding.
She gave him the excuse. “You must have misunderstood me. I asked Norman not to lay me off. Now, I need to go and sleep.”
She stood up and was suddenly dizzy. Putting her hand on the chair back, she bent to pick up her shawl and purse. Darren leaned over and kissed her cheek. Startled, she left. Maybe he was asserting his control, making sure she understood her future lay with him. But she was too tired to think further about his motives. She staggered back to her room and was glad the others hadn’t come in yet. She lay down, her limbs burning with fatigue, and melted into the mattress.
But May was wide-awake at three a.m. She put on her earbuds so as not to wake the other women and opened her tablet. Googling “relationships,” she found a webinar called “Taking Your Intimate Relationship to the Next Level Without Involving Your Partner.” The relationship coach promised: Unleash his instinct for intimacy and a ravishing relationship will be yours! But the relationship mentor hadn’t mentioned living in different centuries.
It almost seemed like she and Darren lived on different planets. He had wanted her fired. He was setting things up to make it easy to break up with her. Had she moved on? With a man long dead? How different they were. Gianlorenzo had called her Poet and had her model for an angel. Bernini’s angels were so beautiful people even had them tattooed on their bodies. Darren thought her writing was a distraction, unless it was pointed at getting an academic publication, which he knew it wasn’t. How did she wind up attracting such an ambitious and critical man?
Could she have an intimate relationship without involving her partner’s century? She fell back asleep on that question.

Sample Scene Three

Gorpat’s eyes flew open, and she jumped to her knees. “Fire! Fire!” She pointed to the ice dwellers, then lifted Ven out of his bedroll.
The blue man screamed, trying to swat the giant while dangling upside-down in the air.
Ryne jumped to his feet and kicked Ven’s bedroll. A red stone rolled out, its color fading to pale white as it came to rest beside Ryne’s foot.
“It is not a fire, you beast!” He pointed at the giant, his pale eyes lit with fury. “It is Ven’s warming stone.”
Gorpat’s face fell, and she dropped Ven back on the ground. He hit the dirt with a thud, cursing as he rolled onto his side.
Zier scratched the back of his head, sharing startled looks with his cousins. “Warming stone?”
Ven stood and limped to Ryne’s bedroll, scooping up the stone. “I use it to chase away the chill.”
Zier turned to Alec, an excited gleam in his eyes. “Is this stone like the one Markus used to deflect the goddess’s magic?”
Alec nodded, finally relieved he had proof his story was not a hoax. “It’s exactly like the stone Markus used.”
A chorus of excited whispers broke out as the dwarves jumped to their feet, heads bent and arms wildly waving.
Zier hobbled over to Alec, patting him on the knee. “I’m sorry for doubting you, son.”
“Why do you ask?” Ryne’s booming voice cut through the dwarves’ chatter.
All eyes shot to Ryne, and not a sound could be heard except for Gorpat blowing her nose into her sleeve. Ryne glared at them with legs braced apart, his hand on the hilt of his blade.
Zier rubbed his beard, eyeing Ryne for a long, tense moment. “How many do the ice people have?”
Ryne jutted a foot forward, speaking through clenched teeth. “Again, why do you ask?”
“I would gladly trade any of my goods for such a stone,” Zier answered.
Ven tucked the stone back in his bedroll and went to stand beside Ryne, his youthful face transformed into a mask of hard angles. “This stone has been in my family for generations and is not for trade.”
Zier rubbed his hands together. “I have spices, gold, weapons.” He waddled back to the campfire, lifting the shield with a groan. “Look at this fine workmanship.”
“Again,” Ryne boomed as the other ice dwellers rose from their beds and flanked him, “this stone is not for trade.”
“Very well.” Zier heaved an overly-dramatic sigh and lowered the shield. “But if you should change your mind—”
“Our minds will not change.” Ryne said firmly.
Alec’s breath caught in his throat at the murderous look in Ryne’s eyes, the same look the dwarves were reciprocating as they flanked Zier, their hands resting on the hilts of their swords. The dwarves outnumbered the ice dwellers seven to one, not to mention they had a giant on their side who could flatten them all into hotcakes.
Brendle ran behind Des, shaking as if he’d just been pulled from an icy river. Tar stood between the dwarves and Ryne, dancing on his paws.
            “Come here, Tar!” Ryne growled.
Tar nuzzled Grim’s hand before slinking over to Ryne, his tail between his legs.
The dog didn’t want to see his master fight with the dwarves, and neither did Alec. He had to think of something, and fast, before their disagreement escalated.
He stepped between the dwarves and Ryne, holding up both hands. “Why don’t we all get some sleep?” He did his best to keep his composure, despite the wild beating of his heart. “We can discuss the stone in the morning.”
“Are you as daft as the dwarves?” Ryne pointed at Alec with an accusatory finger. “There will be no discussion.”
“Go to bed, Ryne,” Alec spoke through a frozen smile.
“Do not tell me what to do.”
Ryne was either very stubborn, very foolish, or both. Either way, Alec had had enough of his temper. Balling his hands, he channeled his dead father’s dark and violent moods as he stalked toward Ryne. “I said, go to bed!” He jutted a finger at Ryne’s bedroll, feeling the heat creep into his chest as he and Ryne locked gazes for several interminable, thudding heartbeats.
So enraged was Alec, he was barely aware of his own shallow breathing or of Gorpat sniveling behind them.
“Friends no fight.” the giant cried.
Alec couldn’t let Ryne win this battle of wills. As the dwarves’ grumbles grew louder, Alec knew their lives depended on Ryne backing down.

Book Spotlight ~ High Hand by Curtis J. James #Espionage #Novel

High Hand

by Curtis J. James

About High Hand:

A billionaire businessman with secret ties to Russia becomes the Republican presidential candidate. Does this plot sound familiar? Years before the rise of Donald Trump, Curtis Harris, James Ellenberger, and James Rosen may have predicted the crazy political landscape we have been recently experiencing in their espionage thriller High Hand [Copper Peak Press, January 4, 2018].

In High Hand the billionaire Republic nominee, Stuart Roberts, is on a glide path to the White House until a bomb explodes during a campaign rally in Los Angeles leaving him seriously injured. Is there a connection between a bomb blast meant to kill the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and a group of prominent men who played poker in Moscow years ago? Fifteen years earlier, while serving as a US ambassador to Russia, Roberts was one of the poker players in a group organized by Frank Adams, a Moscow correspondent and top investigative reporter for the Los Angeles Register. The story centers around Frank Adams, who is on a mission to figure out why his old poker buddies are being targeted for assassination.

When Adams gets a call from an old friend in Russia, he returns to his old stomping ground and risks his life in a high-stakes bid to uncover the truth about the Republican presidential candidate’s secret ties to Russia. In the midst of threats to reporters, Adams discovers bizarre intervention by President Vladimir Putin and a US spy agency’s covert effort to alter the presidential race.

“Major presidential candidates must be vetted very closely, especially those with great wealth and complicated overseas business dealings,” Rosen says. “In the Internet Age and 24/7 cable reporting, it would seem impossible that someone like Stuart Roberts could reach the White House while shielding dangerous aspects of his past. Yet, the current Special Counsel and congressional investigations of President Trump’s alleged ties to Russia reveal how real this threat is, especially when the White House candidate is willing to conceal his past and ignore long-established but unwritten rules of American government.”

Dr. Vince Houghton, the Historian and Curator of the International Spy Museum, took an extreme interest in High Hand and feels the authors essentially predicted the 2016 election. “It’s hard to overstate how prescient this book is, especially considering how long it takes from when a book is actually written until it is published,” Dr. Houghton reveals. “Rosen, Harris and Ellenberger were thinking about Russian interference in an American presidential election years ago. Throw in the billionaire Republican candidate and the espionage angle and you’ve got the classic recipe for life imitating art. The only problem these authors will have is convincing people they didn’t hastily write this book in the summer of 2017.”

Book Spotlight & #Giveaway ~ Heart on Fire (The Kingmaker Chronicles, Book #3) by Amanda Bouchet @AuthorABouchet @SourcebooksCasa

Heart on Fire by Amanda Bouchet
The Kingmaker Chronicles, #3
Publication date: January 2, 2018

The riveting conclusion to The Kingmaker Chronicles!

GODS. I’M AN IDIOT.
Without Griffin—and apparently a few meddling Gods—to push me along, I’d still be telling fortunes at the circus, lying about my past, ignoring my future, and living as far away from my tyrant mother as humanly possible.

True understanding thuds into place. Hope isn’t just an abstract concept; it’s me. Flesh and blood me. Griffin knew it all along. Probably everyone did. I’m an idea in human form.

I have the power of the Gods at my fingertips.
The only thing ever stopping me has been me.

Read an Excerpt:

Griffin’s hand tightens on my arm.
I roll my eyes. “I’m not going to fall in, you know. The cliff is all the way over there.”
He loosens his hold. Sort of.
I glance up at him, trying to tame my sudden smile. Domineering and overprotective doesn’t even begin to describe my husband. There’s also deliciously jealous, but that’s another subject all together. The black stubble framing his mouth makes his full lips look impossibly kissable. It’s been hours since they were last on mine. And I love to kiss the hawkish curve of his nose. So strong and masculine. I adore that nose. And the rest of him. His powerful body. Muscle. Sinew. Bone.
I gaze up at him, nearly sighing. “I love you.”
Griffin stops dead in his tracks and glares down at me. “That’s it. We’re leaving.”
I blink. “What? Why?”
“You think something terrible is going to happen.”
“No, I don’t.” I frown. “I don’t think so.”
His eyes narrow, wariness hardening his expression. “You do.”
“What are you talking about?”
He scowls at me.
“Well, something terrible could happen,” I concede. “But that’s always true, no matter where or when. Tomorrow, I could trip over my own feet and break my neck for all I know.”
Judging by the look on Griffin’s face, I don’t think that helped.
“You only say you love me or you’re sorry when you’re scared or almost dead. You’re not almost dead, so what’s scaring you?” he demands.
“I say I love you all the time!”
“When we’re in bed. When I’m so deep inside you that you can’t feel anything but me. Not when we’re about to knock on a stranger’s door. What’s scaring you?” he demands again.
I huff. “At the moment? The way your jaw is popping like it’s alive.”
Griffin crosses his arms. “I want honesty. Right now.”
Right now, Your Imperialness?”
His nostrils flare. His hard look is spectacular.
I’m not intimidated. It makes me hot. Then again, so does just about everything at the moment, but not in the same way.
“If you must know, the magic around here is a little intense and…disturbing, but it’s not scaring me. Not really. It’s probably just something coming from whatever is down there in that God Pit,” I say, waving toward the cliff. “I’m a shade nervous. That’s all.”
His eyes stay flinty and unconvinced. “That’s all? That’s not generally cause for a heartfelt declaration, at least not from you.”
I toss my hands in the air. “Fine. I take it back. I looked at you, found you incredibly desirable, and my body got all hot and tingly. I blame pregnancy for an excess of sentimentality and…and…urges!”
Griffin stares at me. Then his mouth splits into a grin that makes me all kinds of angry. He reaches for me again, his grasp lighter this time.
“Incredibly desirable?” Looking smug, he threads his fingers through mine.
Scowling, I poke him in the chest with my free hand. “Well, you do have that whole overbearing warlord thing going on. Plus, plenty of muscles in all the right places, some good ideas, and, you know, a really big sword.”
A laugh cracks out of Griffin, and my heart swoops like an off-balance bird. He’s rarely free with humor these days, or maybe there’s just not enough of it in our lives anymore. The happy flutter that wings through my chest takes any lingering irritation away with it.
Gah! Talk about mood changes!
Griffin captures my other hand and then pulls me in to him until I’m standing between his legs. “I love you, too, Cat.”
He kisses me, his mouth pressing softly against mine. Warmth rolls straight from his lips to my toes, which curl in my boots.
“Tell me again,” he coaxes.
I shake my head, our noses brushing.
“Say it,” he demands against my mouth.
“I don’t think so.”
“Last chance,” he warns, gently nipping at my lower lip.
“Big sword.”
Chuckling, Griffin swats my bottom. “There’s more where that came from.”
I look up at him through my lashes. “I sure hope so.”
He grins. “I think you just managed coy.”
“Good Gods! Has the Underworld frozen over?”
“Next, Centaurs will fly.” He brushes his lips over mine again, not lingering, and when he lifts his head, his black hair ruffling on the faintly sulfurous wind, the teasing gleam is already absent from his eyes. “You’re sure there’s nothing else?”
“Nothing besides our baby wreaking havoc on my moods?” I shake my head. “But I wanted you before. I want you always.”
He lifts his hand and brushes his thumb across my lips. Then his fingers fall away, trailing lightly down my arm until I shiver.
“You’re the air I breathe,” he says without a trace of humor in his voice.
My whole chest clenches hard, squeezing a tight, almost painful beat from my heart. “I admire you,” I reply. “I need you. I love you with all my heart.”
Griffin offers me a different kind of smile this time, small, lopsided, gentle, and so entirely genuine. It fades almost immediately, though, and he straightens to his full, imposing height, abruptly pinning me with his warlord stare. “If you feel anything off here, we leave, with or without the potion we came for. You’ve got great instincts, Cat. Trust your gut.”
I nod. I will. I always do.
