The Favorite Elements That I Love to Read in a Book

By Michael Small

I like many things not just limited to books. I like fantasy and adventure. I love great fights and battles. I love the hero's journey, the rising scale of danger and action, and the growth of characters over the course of their journey. I love the complex histories and magic systems many modern stories have employed.

If they can create a compelling world, and can keep their continuity in line, the results are amazing. They can be a bit convoluted at times, especially if the books are long, but the amount of creativity people exert when creating their own worlds is fascinating, and I love delving into those alternate histories. (Good music in movies, shows, and video games are another great thing I like. I love soundtrack music).

One of my favorite things I like in stories that I don't see done very often is anything related to aliens and monsters, especially if they are treated as people. For example, one of my favorite franchises is the video game series Mass Effect, which has tons of aliens with immense histories, and the characters they made from those species were incredibly fascinating and oddly likable. Despite them being alien, they all had their own desires and drives that made them seem not much different from us humans.

But that's just an exception. I personally don't see many of those kinds of stories out there. I see many cool monsters in fiction, such as lizardmen, and I wonder why they always have to be villains, at least in most cases. Why are they just background characters that seem like nothing more than window dressing, and seem to contribute nothing in the greater scheme of the universe, while humans take all the glory? Or why do many fantasy stories have primarily humans, maybe with one non-human species thrown in there?

I think fantasy and sci-fi can be so much more than just having humans as their central characters. Star Wars, for example, has many cool and creative alien creatures, but I feel like many of them are just there to be eye candy and nothing more, while the main characters are, for the most part, humans, at least where the movies are concerned.

Also, what would it be like if they were friends with someone like a young boy? I always dreamed of being in those worlds, so I can meet these interesting creatures. So I decided to make my own story based on childhood imaginations of mine, taking inspirations from various other stories I like to craft my own world.

I think it's a funny idea of fantasy and sci-fi monsters being forced to parent human children, and becoming a close-knit family in the process. I think it can make for a story that is equal parts exciting, humorous, and touching. I want my aliens to be both menacing and powerful, creatures that shape the fate of the universe, and ones you shouldn't treat lightly, but also alluring, bombastic, and full of life, so that they can make an impact on readers.

Coming up with many different alien species was a ton of fun, and I hope people like the alien creatures I have in the center of my story.

About the author:

Michael Small didn’t plan on becoming an author. He initially wanted to be a video game programmer, though he couldn’t wrap his head around the subject. But he always had a story to tell, and seeing how woke messaging had started infesting modern entertainment, he dropped out of college in 2016 and taught himself how to write, spending the years since creating his own world, which became his debut novel Kuro-Sil: The Book of Humans, Reptuuls, and God.

Michael is a Christian and goes to church regularly, using his faith to inspire his stories. He is also an avid gamer, and has been playing video games since he was three. He mainly likes pop culture stuff like movies, tv, and more recently manga, but he likes to try many things, like going on walks and drives, and working out (though he’s not a pro at it).

He is currently thirty years old and lives in Washington state.

Book Synopsis for Kuro-Sil: The Book of Humans, Reptuuls, and God:

I am the Chronicler, hear my story:

In the year 5027, humanity will be enslaved by an alien race called the Reptuuls.

But what if I told you a young boy befriended their oppressors?

Orren Hawkins is a boy with a dream: to make friends with the Reptuuls, no matter the cost. It won’t be easy due to the Reptuuls hatred of humanity. But by the grace of a long forgotten God, Orren has found two great and unusual friends, and they must learn to work together to rescue enslaved humans, as part of their destiny to unite man and Reptuul under God.

There’s just one problem: Orren is himself a drulak, a slave of Reptuuls. Can he still accomplish his dream?

Will you dare read the true story of a forbidden friendship no government wants exposed? Then welcome, one and all, to the legend of the Kuro-Sil!

One thousand years in the future, humans have developed the ability to alter their genes to create a perfect version of themselves, but not all are so fortunate. All the fiery tempered young woman knows is how to fight. Using her wits and skills, Cerys must compete in brutal prize fights if she is to bring food to the table for her younger sister. But, she is always aware that the next fight could her last—she must find a way out of this life.

Leaving behind all that she knows, the last place the tempestuous Cerys expects to find herself is joining the United Planet's Space Force Academy, where she battles prejudice and intolerance in a world run by genetically modified humans.

Contains mature themes.

Genre:

SciFi Space Opera

Read an Excerpt:

She felt light-headed. “I need half an hour. To find my sister, that’s all…” Starla would understand this was for both of them. She would ask Gerry to take Starla in. Of course, she would. Gerry had a big heart.

“If you’re joining the Space Force, you leave now. You must decide,” he said.

Panic seized her. “I have to say goodbye. I must make arrangements.”

“Step into the pick-up zone. Or you are free to stay behind.”

Cerys glanced up at the silver disk darting through the clouds towards them. She looked back at the crowd. Inquisitive tourists gathered in a wide circle around her. Standing on the edge of the pick-up zone, their faces flashed: green, white, green, white.

In that moment, a woman shoved to the front of the crowd, the haft of a sword glinting over her shoulder—a Valkyrie.

“Kara,” Cerys shouted. “Over here.”

“Cerys.” Kara strode towards the checkpoint. GMs shrank away. “What’s going on? Did they take you? I heard about it.”

The secofficer scowled, and the crowd whooped.

“Kara, listen.” Cerys tugged her aside. “I’ve been recruited to the Space Force. Tell Gerry to look after Starla, and tell Starla…I love her. I’m getting her out of here. I’ll send money. Promise me.”

Kara blinked. “Now? You’re going now?”

“Just promise.”

“I promise.” She nodded vigorously. “Of course, I promise. Hey, what’s this…?”

Secnoids grabbed Kara from behind, dragging her away. Even the famous Valkyrie were not permitted to say goodbye.

“Tell Starla I’ll message…” Cerys shouted, but Kara was already lost in the crowd.

These are the challenges, these are the conquests, these are the dreams, these are the successes, and with life, these are the sometimes tragic failures.

The story-telling, the fable, the book. For the Love of Dog Tales 2.

About the Author:

Storyteller and dreamer, Irvin L. Cannon, put pen to paper for the first time in response to a challenge. A simple challenge issued in response to his comment… “I can write a better story than that.” The challenge uttered, “Do it then”! He began scribbling story after story into notebooks. For the Love of Dog Tales is the first release from those tucked away pages birthed from that short exchange.

His vision and imagination for the art of storytelling was primarily nurtured by his love for comic books. A scientist by training, dog lover by nature, and a man with many years in law enforcement, Irvin’s experience in the inner city street wars, combine to produce a biting view of the world around us as seen through the eyes of his canine characters—characters with whom he has crossed paths.

Read an Excerpt:

The leaves and trees here were soft shades of blue, ranging all the way to bold indigo. It was a sharp but not unlovely contrast against the pale sky, which looked white or a little yellowish because of the thick, protective atmosphere, shielding them from the insistent blue luminance of the F-class star. They’d seen patches of gold and yellowish plains, and even plenty of familiar Earthly green plants, which grew here quite well, but the native vegetation tended towards navy, periwinkle, and turquoise.

“Good job back there,” said Sarah in a whisper. “I thought you were gonna crack, to be honest.”

“Me too. But I kept thinking, ‘What would Sarah do?’ and I just tried to look bored,” Toby whispered back. He shot her a smile that started a bit wan, but gradually brightened. “Hey, we did it. And now we’re going to rescue someone.”

“Speaking of,” said Paulo, stumping over, “I finally got this shit figured out. Goddamn map was in really poor resolution and didn’t account for this fucking river valley having a flooded area. They sent me archived shit. I just figured out the discrepancies.” He sighed. “Sorry for snapping at both of you. I’m just worried and stressed.”

Sarah inhaled and let out a long breath. “You and me both. It’s not like I’m rescuing someone who’s basically my hero or anything, while caked in mud and preparing to flee for our lives—oh wait, yes I am. This is a nightmare.”

Toby bumped her shoulder and wiggled his feet in his boots, sluicing the mud off. “At least you’re not having this nightmare alone.”

Paulo pointed. “C’mon. Over there. Who knows how long we have before there are guards or a collection force? Those fake identities won’t hold forever.”

A cold pit formed in Sarah’s stomach. What if this was an elaborate trap? She’d seen that letter, sure, but did they know for certain that Patience was still alive? What if the guards had found her already?

“We’re in disguise,” Toby ventured, a tremor in his voice. “Um. Just so you know. That’s why we look like guards. But we’re not.”

There was a rustling. Didn’t sound like anything bigger than a rabbit—if those had even been introduced here.

The two guards circled them both, the person with sideburns keeping their gun trained right at Sarah and Toby’s faces.

“Wait. There’s supposed to be a woman here that Patience talked to,” said the one on the right.

Silently, a third person crept out of a hidey-hole Sarah hadn’t even noticed. Moss and a snarl of brush against the arch of a tree root parted and revealed a rather small woman with dark skin and large, anxious eyes, and a larger gun.

And then, abruptly, Sarah was face-to-face with her—Patience Ngouabi.

For many reasons, she was one of the most beautiful women Sarah had ever met, known, or heard of. Her skin was perhaps duller and less perfectly even in tone than it looked in interviews, but was still the glorious brown of fresh clay, with a hint of rust.

Still, she had the angelic features Sarah had seen in so many interviews: that heart-shaped face, broad, gentle nose, soft cheekbones, and full, plush lips. Her wide, dark eyes searched Sarah’s face in momentary confusion.

She had really been hoping to meet Patience under different circumstances—not while going by a dead woman’s name. If she took Patience’s hand, she thought, Patience would be touching the skin of a dead woman, not Sarah’s.

“I’m Sarah Jean White,” she said, just managing to hold her voice steady, trying to pretend she wasn’t starstruck.

“I’m afraid we’ll have to do the formal introduction later. There are soldiers on the way!” said Patience, without much of her name.

Read an Excerpt:

Morrissey was seven when he first suspected that the world didn’t fit him quite right. Two sizes too big or two sizes too small, he couldn’t be sure. All he knew was that planet Earth pinched him in all the wrong places. Discovering this uncomfortable truth wasn’t like when you learn there is no Santa Claus, or that In The Beginning, Man created God and not the other way around. No. The truth had hit him very much like the tight, smelly fist of a schoolyard bully called Norman Riley.

The fight, if you could call it that, didn’t last long; a three against one attack rarely does. Why do thugs always travel in threes? But Morrissey managed to get off one good shot that seemed to make his point. After that, he spent most of the time blocking Norman’s punches with his nose while his henchmen pinned Morrisey’s arms.

Later that night, he sat at the dining room table, silently pushing peas around his plate while his mum sat patiently opposite. She was too good at mothering to force him to talk before he was ready, but he knew she couldn’t go on pretending he didn’t have an entire tissue box bunged up his nose to stop the bleeding.

“Do you want to talk about it?” she said softly.

Morrissey shrugged the question away without meeting her gaze. Finally, he answered. “Norman Riley is a wanker.”

His mum suppressed a grin. “Davey! You can’t call him that.”

“Well he is. He’s a bully and a wanker.”

“But he’s never picked on you before.” A twitch of worry flickered across her face. “He hasn’t, has he?”

Being the new kid in town made Morrissey easy prey in Norman’s book, having only recently moved to London from a small town south of Sheffield. Up until now, he’d been able to avoid the brunt of Norman’s torments; there were plenty of other victims further down the food chain. “No. I can usually stay out of his way.”

“But not today?”

“Not today.” Today, Norman had come at him with a full-on purpose. Kids can be horrible to one another, and Norman excelled at horrible. “He said…he said things.”

His mum tried to defuse the situation with one of her tender smiles. “People say things all the time, Davey. Doesn’t mean we have to start fights over them.”

Morrissey glared. “Does it look like I started the fight?”

“No, but — “

“It was about you.” The words came rushing out, unbidden. “He said things about you.”

She stiffened. “What…sort of things?”

Morrissey replayed the scene over in his head, complete with Norman’s malicious glee at having spread the poison. “He said you and his mum got into an argument at the Co-Op. Didn’t you just say that we can’t go around starting fights?” His mum looked away, sheepishly. “He said the fight was about whether or not UFOs are real. How is that even worth fighting about? He said you told her you’d seen one, that you’d even seen an alien.” His mum’s fascination with extraterrestrial phenomena was no secret to him; they’d often make a game of it as they looked up at the stars. Sometimes, when they were out in public, they would play a game of spot the alien, playfully pointing out likely candidates who could be extraterrestrials amongst the passersby, making up fantastic planets complete with complex races and civilisations. But that was a game. Their game. Norman had turned it into something vile and twisted. “He said you were a crackpot. A freak. A mental case.” Morrissey turned his eyes up from his plate, fighting the well of tears. “Is it true? Did you see one — an alien?” His words felt sour and accusatory on the way out.

His mum blanched. Morrissey could tell she was struggling for just the right answer. “That’s silly, Luv. Why would I say that?”

“Why would Norman say that? He’s not smart enough to make something like that up. Is it true?”

She took too long to answer. “I’m so sorry, Luv, I really am. It’s something I don’t like to talk about.”

Meet the Author:

Warren A. Shepherd was seven when he first realized the world didn’t fit him quite right. Two sizes too big or two sizes too small, he couldn’t be sure. But having been transported from the streets of London, England to the streets of Toronto, Canada at such a young age left him with a profound sense of alienation — a boy with one foot in each world yet belonging in neither. The experience, however, did sharpen his sense of self-awareness and made him a keen observer of the human (and not-so-human) condition.

When he sees what humankind is capable of, both the good and the bad, he imagines how we would cope amongst the stars and is driven to tell stories of strange new worlds to try to explain the one that he often cannot.

After all, it takes an alien to know an alien…

“You’re going to let me leave this world, unhindered and unharmed.” Vaziil raised a hand, holding back Sha’an’s unspoken protest. “I know, I know. It seems like a drastic concession on your part. But once I am free, I can disarm the weapon directly at its source and we’ll never have to speak of this matter again. Wouldn’t that be nice? You and your friends need only put down your weapons and walk away.”

Captain Sha’an thought long and hard. Almost too long for Vaziil’s comfort. “And if we do, what assurances do I have that you’ll keep your end of the bargain?”

“I offer no assurance, but it is a simple enough equation. No tricks. No subterfuge. Quickly, Captain. Time is ticking. By now, the weapon is already waking, warming, getting ready to kiss this world goodbye.”

Sha’an checked with her subordinate again who nodded gravely at the readout. She turned back to Vaziil. “Then I should kill you right now,” she said. “I’m willing to bet that if I eliminate your biological triggers there will be no detonation.”

“An interesting bet, Captain, but the humans have a term for something called a dead-man’s switch. Not a new concept but I think you can guess its function. What if killing me accelerates the detonation? Are you really willing to take that risk?” Vaziil chuckled, the sound like grinding glass. He knew this Thon Pahl would be fuelled by vengeance and bloodlust, a dangerous and clumsy mix in a soldier. It was only a matter of time before her mistakes consumed them all. But as the room sizzled with tension, he began to seriously wonder whether he’d misjudged the captain’s obsessive commitment to bring him to justice.

Finally, Captain Sha’an deactivated her weapon and slowly secured it about her waist, her subordinates following suit at her signal. The human woman sobbed.

“You see,” said Vaziil, “we’re cooperating already.” He scoffed at the Thon Pahl capacity for compassion, noting that it would ultimately be their undoing. With one arm tight around his hostage’s neck, he reached into his carry-bag, tracing the butt of his pistol with hesitant fingers. For the briefest of moments he considered engaging the soldiers, his human heart stuttering at the thought. But this Sha’an was a wily one. Though her weapon was holstered, her hand had not left its heel, ready to draw at a split second’s notice. He could probably splash one of them before he fell but the stakes were far too high to take the risk. Instead, he retrieved a small disk and secured it to his belt. He thumbed it to life.

“Don’t be so glum,” he said. “Did you really think I wouldn’t have an exit strategy? Besides, you’ve done a good thing here, Captain. You’ve saved billions of lives. You’ll be a hero to the people of Earth and, indeed, to your own people. You do still have some people left, don’t you?” Vaziil laughed, enjoying the human sensation.

“We tracked you down this time, Vaziil. We will track you down again, no matter how long it takes. It doesn’t matter what colour skin you wear, there won’t be a planet you can hide on where you’ll be safe from us. We have many allies in the galaxy.”

“That’s where you’re so very wrong. There are an infinite number of planets on which to hide. And Captain, I too have allies. But I wish you the best of luck in the hunt, nonetheless.”

And then the strangest thing happened, causing Vaziil to question his understanding of the human will. The woman went silent and stiffened in Vaziil’s arms. Her focus burned into Captain Sha’an’s eyes and she spoke — calmly, coolly, one single word. “Shoot,” she said.

The Thon Pahl captain’s eyes twitched briefly and then, in one smooth motion, she drew her rifle into a firing position and let off a blast. The bolt seared through the right side of the woman’s neck before exploding into Vaziil’s shoulder. Captain Sha’an fired again into his chest as he stumbled backward, forcing his hostage loose. The woman collapsed to the ground, grasping at the world around her as her neck wound sizzled like bacon. She looked hopefully up toward Sha’an, mumbling incoherently. Vaziil tried desperately to vault for cover, but another blast took him in the stomach.

“That’s enough Vaziil,” said Sha’an. “You will yield, or you will die, here and now.”

Vaziil gulped at precious air, dark purplish blood bubbling at his human lips. “No, Captain…I shall do neither.” He clamped down on the disk at his belt; an angry energy cracked the room, engulfing him in a sphere of vibrant light. Sha’an and her soldiers unleashed a final barrage of weapons fire which splashed harmlessly against the shimmering shell; Vaziil’s image flickered within. Then in one final burst of blinding energy, he evaporated into nothingness.
