She blinked back tears and her stomach lurched again. She’d been taken from her home against her will, was being used for something she never wanted to take part in, and had been dumped in a place she didn’t even know to work for a being who claimed to own her. And she had no idea how to get home.

Lovely.

“Oh, and if you try to rip the comm off your body, it will alert P482 and he’ll destroy you.” T181 threw a rag in her direction. “Get to cleaning. These tables won’t sanitize themselves.”

She held onto the rag, then wondered what she was supposed to clean with the rag. Instead of asking questions, she moved to the first table and wiped it down. Tears blurred her vision, but she refused to cry. If she’d been able to be strong so far, she could keep doing it. She had no choice.

She wasn’t about to let anyone see her crack. She’d dissociate from herself and pretend she wasn’t here. Again. She wasn’t anyone’s slave. She didn’t have to act like she was happy in her surroundings.

“A few rules. Don’t talk to the clients. You’re here to clean, not flirt. They won’t take you out of here, so don’t ask. Understood?” T181 asked. “If they want food, they’ll let you know, but you simply deliver. You clean, you keep your mouth shut, and you give in to P482 if you want freedom from here.”

A man walked into the diner and said something she couldn’t quite hear to T181. Lindsey moved to the second table and watched the man. So far, she’d only seen beings that resembled satellites, like T181 and P482. This was the first being she’d encountered, even at a glance, who sort of resembled a human.

She watched him and her heart ached. Not only because she missed her home, but because she missed being held. Missed being touched. Missed other humans. Hell, she wasn’t even sure anyone would want to look for her. No one probably missed her.

Still, that didn’t mean she couldn’t drool over this being. She swept her gaze over him. Dark hair, a bit wavy and just long enough to need a little product. Icy blue eyes that seemed to pierce through her the longer she looked at him. He had a slight dimple when he smiled and dazzling white teeth. He even had nice hands. The suit fit tight to his body, like it was tailored precisely for him. He oozed sex. No, not just sex, but power and confidence as well.

Not that this man would ever look her way. Good gracious. She was like Cinderella, but on a whole different planet. Even back on Earth men like him didn’t pay her any mind. She faded into the background -- just like she would here.

T181 moved between her and the man. “He’s mine. He’s got money, he’s free to move about the planet, and won’t bed you.”

She almost asked, “Bed him?” She hadn’t even thought of that. “Sure.”

She glanced over at him while she cleaned the third table. He had nice lips. Just full enough for a good kiss. She’d bet he was skilled at kissing, too. Not that she’d ever know. She was stuck.

She’d been taken to breed and given a bullshit answer for how to get home. A lie. Her heart hurt. This was so silly. Impossible, really. This man, no matter how sexy he was, probably had obscene amounts of money or credits or whatever. She wasn’t even sure how he’d been able to come to the planet. Was he a prisoner, too?

Toran Bladewielder lurked in the darkness of the warehouse, determined to catch the thief who had been stealing foodstuffs from recent shipments. Repressing a wince of pain, he leaned back against the building’s rough stone wall to ease the ache in his leg. Six months ago, he had been a Holy Defender -- a member of the religious order which preserved the authority of the gods. Then in a battle far from home, he had been struck down by a blow from an infidel.

The injury to his leg had made him unfit for military service, and he had been unceremoniously shipped back to his home monastery. There he had been given a choice -- accept the menial jobs of tending the garden and preparing food for his brothers -- or leave the order. After the exhilaration of battle, he was unable to envision a life of such work. With a heavy heart, he had chosen to renounce his vows.

For months he had felt like a brigantine without a rudder, adrift on an unknown sea, until his old schoolmate Gareth Lamb had offered him a guard’s job in one of the Glencarn warehouses that he and Prince Gawain owned. It was a far cry from his former holy mission, but at least it was work that could utilize some of his fighting skills.

When he wasn’t at his post, he was working to strengthen his ruined leg. The combination kept him from tipping over the edge into the black despair that had threatened to swallow him whole.

It had been a routine job -- until the last few days. Now he had a real puzzle to solve. No one had been able to catch the sneak thief helping himself to a recent shipment of foodstuffs from far off Amorn, although the evidence of his work was as plain as an open box of dates or an unsealed amphora. But the knave was well-nigh invisible.

Invisible? Toran snorted. That was mere fantasy, but the lout always seemed to know when it was safe to strike -- leaving only the evidence of his thievery.

Not tonight. Toran had worked out a plan to capture the culprit. He made his preparations during the day, then stationed himself in one of the smaller side rooms of the dockside building.

But the plan had its own disadvantages. After hours of waiting in the shadows, his bad leg had begun to throb. Soon he would have to shift his positions, and that would give him away. He clenched his fists, his jaw set in a hard line as he fought down the pain.

He was about to give up when the sound of soft, stealthy footsteps put him on alert. Someone had come into the room where Toran had stacked crates of the cargo that the thief had been plundering. He stayed where he was, determined to win the upper hand this time. He could not see into the room where the bait was stacked, but when his keen ears detected the squeak of a nail being eased from a crate lid, he readied himself to pull on the cord in his right hand.

To his surprise, he heard a sudden flailing as though his quarry had somehow realized what was about to happen. But it was already too late.

The rope released a net that fell from the ceiling over the boxes -- and over the brigand who stood beside them.

The man let out a high-pitched scream, then scrabbled as he tried desperately to disentangle himself from the web, but the edges were weighted, making it hard to lift.

Toran sprang from his hiding place and moved across the stone floor as quickly as he could. But he had been standing in place for too long. His bad leg gave out, and he ended up going down in a heap. Luckily, the netting trap gave him the time to crawl forward and come down on top of the struggling prisoner.

They lay entangled on the cold floor, both breathing hard, the miscreant trying desperately to get away, and Toran just as determined to hold onto his captive. As the man thrashed about, Toran felt spindly arms and legs, a slender back, and a mass of soft hair. An unusual combination, he thought as he pulled the webbing tight, gathering it around the prisoner as though he were securing a wild animal in a net.

“Stop struggling or you will hurt yourself,” he advised.

The words were met with a stout kick to his bad leg that might have hurt if the netting hadn’t truncated the blow.

It was too dark in the warehouse to see the struggling form. Ignoring his throbbing knee, Toran gathered up net and captive and dragged them across the floor and through the cargo door onto the riverside wharf where he had left a lantern burning on a hook.

At this hour of the night, there was no one else about. As he dragged his bundle, he added to his impressions of the thief. This was no full-grown man. It must be a youth -- mayhap a desperate street urchin who was using the shipments as a source of food. Still, stealing was stealing, and it must stop.

Angry that the exertion had him breathing hard, Toran grabbed the prisoner by the hair and turned him to his back so that he was suddenly looking down into frightened green eyes. They were the first thing he saw, but he quickly took in more details. Wild dark hair framing a delicate face. A small nose, a slender neck. His gaze traveled farther downward, seeing ragged clothing of a cut he did not recognize. Not pants below the dirty shirt, but skirts. As a former holy brother, he had little experience with skirts or anything else to do with the female sex. Quickly his gaze traveled upward again, seeing twin mounds pushing up at the chest. This was no slender lad. It was a girl.

“Blood of the gods,” he croaked. “Who are you?”

She looked away. “Nobody.” Her voice was soft and strangely accented.

“A thief,” he answered his own question. “Look at me.”

Slowly she turned her face back toward his, and he saw the look of devastation in her eyes.

“Let me go and you will never see me again,” she whispered.

“I cannot. You have stolen from a royal warehouse, and I must turn you over to the prince’s guards.”

He saw her lips tremble. “I did it to keep myself alive.”

“Who are you?” he asked again.

#Review ~ Blood Rose: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel: (Blood Rose Academy) (Haven Hollow Book 26) by J.R. Rain and H.P. Mallory #JRRain #HPMallory #PWF #ParanormalWomensFiction

ASIN: ‎ B0BRLCY2DS
Publisher: ‎ Rain Press
Publication Date: ‎ January 27, 2023
Print Length: ‎ 205 pages

Amazon: https://amzn.to/3XmMkQx
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/87569314-blood-rose

About the Book:

I’m finally going to Blood Rose Academy, where I’ll be trained in witch magic, and I can’t wait…

Except Blood Rose Academy isn’t exactly how I hoped it would be.

First off, the witches are all catty and hex-happy, and I’ve been targeted as their newest victim.

And if that weren’t bad enough, there’s a longstanding feud between the witches and the vampires, which means all vampires hate the witches and vice-versa.

Maybe that wouldn’t suck so hard (no pun intended) if I didn’t sorta, kinda have a crush on one of the vamps—a loner named Rook, who happens to be the headmaster’s son.

But Rook doesn’t even know I exist. Well… it’s actually worse: he does know I exist, but he’s made it pretty clear he can’t stand me.

Fun times!

The ‘fun’ only increases when I learn that a handful of Fae students have gone missing and my only friend, a faerie named Oleander, insists there’s foul play.

Suddenly recruited into a club of rebels, I find myself helping them to solve the mystery of the missing students.

And guess who happens to be in this club?

Right—Rook.

To say he’s unhappy to see me is an understatement. Now, if I could just train my wayward heart to get over him… things might start looking up.

Between battling my own kind, trying to keep from getting drained by the vamps, searching for the missing students, and uncovering my own shocking truths, I’m wondering if I should have just stayed home.

My Review:

I have loved the Haven Hollow series since book one. Full of wonderful characters, excellent storylines, and a perfectly created setting, I immerse myself in each and every book. There are multiple spin-offs that focus on one of the main characters, and Blood Rose is told from Astrid's POV. She finally gets to go to Blood Rose Academy to be properly trained in witch magic. Astrid's world comes crashing down when she realizes the Academy isn't at all what she had hope it would be. She is on the end of a lot of hazing, and right in the middle of a feud between the witches and the vampires. Learning about missing Fae just adds to her misery.

Astrid's book is by far one of my absolute favorites in the series. I love them all but Blood Rose was
exceptional. I love Astrid's character and love that she got her own spin-off. Astrid is a wonderfully written character. She's so likable and her attitude and personality is so different than the witches at Blood Rose. I'm excited to see how everything goes in the next book. Blood Rose left a lot of things hanging.

The series also just continues to get better and better with every story. Blood Rose is the first book in the Blood Rose Academy series (and book 26 in the Haven Hollow series) by H.P. Mallory and J.R. Rain. This writing duo brings interesting stories, intriguing characters, and thought-provoking mysteries to life. The character development provides history and growth, and the world-building creates a fantastic world to watch the characters do their thing.

I was provided a copy of this book to read.

Trouble Play: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel by Elizabeth Hunter is now live! @EHunterWrites @valentine_pr_ #PWF #Review

Trouble Play: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel by Elizabeth Hunter is now live!

Paranormal women's fiction for lovers of sassy women, psychic shenanigans, and lifelong friends.

This desert oasis has gone to the dogs, and things are about to get bloody! (Not the dogs though. The dogs are fine.)

Comedian Evy Lane thought she'd done it all, but taking on the role of mistress of ceremonies for the Desert Fancy Dog Show may be her most challenging gig yet. The locals are a menagerie of high-strung prima donnas, nervous Nelsons, and she's not talking about the dogs!

When high stakes competition leads to gruesome murder, she's going to need every telepathic power at her disposal—and every psychic friend she knows—to make this show go on. Pesky police detectives, dangerously attractive investigators, and a menagerie of our favorite Vista de Lirio characters make this mystery the most twisted yet!

TROUBLE PLAY is the third book in the Vista de Lirio series, a new paranormal mystery series by Elizabeth Hunter, bestselling author of the Elemental Mysteries, the Glimmer Lake series, and The Irin Chronicles.

Author's Note: No fictional or non-fictional canines have been harmed in the writing of this novel. Fictional humans are on their own.

My Review:

I really enjoyed Trouble Play, book three in the Vista de Lirio #PWF trilogy. As a lover of dog shows, I found myself immersed in the world created by Elizabeth Hunter. When a murder occurs, Evy, Vivian, and Julia's unique talents are requested by law enforcement. The book is filled with twists and turns, romance, and a behind-the-scenes look at the goings-on at a dog show. The story is fun and the mystery complex.

The characters are wonderful, the setting is great, and the mystery kept me on my toes. I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Hunter and devour everything she writes. She has never written anything but the best stories. I’ve been one of her biggest fans since I devoured A Hidden Fire, her first book in the Elemental Mysteries series. All of Elizabeth's novels reach deep within my emotional center and manage to trigger reactionary responses. These types of books are my favorite. The emotions don't have to always include tears; it is just the ability to invoke proper emotional responses to scenarios being played out.

It's possible that I not only was provided an ARC but also bought myself a copy ;)

She always knew New York was a magical city. She had no idea how magical.

What do you do if you tend to attract unfortunate incidents? Make it work for you, that’s what. Take me, Mandi Muscovitz, independent insurance claims adjuster and master of disaster. I’ve made a career out of bad luck. But no matter how good I get, every year on April 30th, my birthday, mayhem always ensues. This year’s no different, and I expected that. Yeah, alright, I may have caused the problem, but it wasn’t intentional. And I’m going to be the one to fix it, so it’s like it cancels itself out in a way.

But whatever. Don’t worry. I got this… Probably.

Join Mandi on her May Day adventure as she saves the world in Magic Takes Manhattan, a not-to-be-missed, humorous Paranormal Women’s Fiction novella.

Read an Excerpt:

Sometimes I’m blown away by my city. Trudging through the tedium of daily life, trying to survive, it’s easy to forget how Liberty Island is so close, or Ellis Island, or any islands with tourist attractions.

“The last time I was here, I was eight.”

“I come here often.”

As we head toward Lady Liberty, I swear she looks down and gives me a wink.

“Did you see that? She winked at me.”

“Maybe she finds you attractive.”

“Ha ha.”

“You should be so lucky,” Jack says, surprising me by having a sense of humor.

As we approach the entrance, I stop. “Don’t tell me I got to walk it.”

With a cocky grin that makes him look too hot to be human, he wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me in close.

Hello. This has taken a strange turn. Can’t say I hate it. The man is gorgeous. If a golden sunray were a person with an eccentric sense of style, it’d be him. Even so, I’m not marrying a stranger.

With a wave of his hand, we shoot straight up, flying past the top of her head into the sky, and I scream at the top of my lungs the entire time. Next thing I know, we’re in a shrine made of light and gold that shines like we’re standing inside the sun. It’s a big, ornate room suspended above the Statue of Liberty.

“Wow,” I breathe.

“Please try something for me.”

“Uh oh. If it has anything to do with jumping out one of these windows to see if I can fly on my own, the answer is no friggin’ way.”

“Perhaps try something simple.”

“Simple works.”

“Focus.”

“Alright. Focusing.” Deep breath in and exhale.

Oy, I feel like a dope, but I stop myself and open to the possibilities. Hello, I’m in a magic temple floating over the Statue of Liberty. Anything is friggin’ possible. Time to give this a real shot. What if Mr. B’s right? What if I’ve got powers? Who knows?

“Let’s start with something simple any witch could do—I’d like you to float a feather.”

A small white feather flutters in, hovers before me, and drifts toward the ground.

“If it touches the floor, the floor will disappear,” he says, and my heart jumps into my throat.

With as much speed as I can muster, I try to snatch the thing. No matter what I do, it flies away. Soon enough I’m chasing this thing around like a psycho, flapping whatever parts necessary to create enough wind to keep it afloat.

“Magic! Use Magic,” Jack chides.

“The stakes are too high!” I shout as I keep it up with the breeze from my spastic body movements.

“Use your powers!”

“I don’t have any!”

Wait, I know! I pull out my lint roller with such speed it might as well be magic and use the rest of my body to guide the feather to the sheet of stickum. Thank God, it works!

“Screw you, feather! I win!”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“I know, but I don’t want to die like that, and I don’t have any powers. I’m sorry.” I plop down onto the gold floor etched with sunray patterns.

He takes a paper out of his pocket and reads as he paces before me.

“Have you ever felt like you knew when the disasters you experience would strike?”

“Only around my birthday because it’s always a disastrous time. The others catch me unaware, even now. I mean, I’ve gotten to where I can spot and avoid them, but that’s from experience, not from a magical power or nothing like that. It’s my job to notice those things.”

“Do your dreams ever come true, or your nightmares?”

“Yeah,” I say with a chuckle.

“Why’s that funny?”

“If I remember my dreams, it’s always boring stuff, like I’m at work filing or some random crap. I don’t have interesting dreams. Never have. They come true, but it’s because I’m dreaming about the stuff I do every day.”

“That’s unique.”

“Is it?”

“Perhaps not,” he says and sighs, massaging the bridge of his nose.

“If I had magical powers, I’d have used them by now, wouldn’t I? It’d be great to be a goddess, but that’s not my reality. And it’s cool. Most people don’t have magical powers. I’m happy to be most people.”

“Maybe we could try one more time. Maybe you’ll undergo some transformation if you find them–”

“I’ll look like a woman you could love?”

What a dick.

“I… I’m sorry, but I’ve had a very clear image of her in my mind my entire life and you are nothing at all like her.”

The sigh that escapes me is unavoidable.

“Look, I want to be offended, but I saw her in Evelyn’s memory. She’s smoking hot, and I am nothing like her. That’s alright though, because she’s a goddess, and I’m just a person.”

“If they buried the magic… Maybe we could try—”

“—Alright, let’s try again.” I pull myself up to standing. “Go ahead. Give me another test. Can it not be a life-or-death thing, though?”

After a moment, he proffers his arm, his hand reaching into a ray of light that shines in through one of the ornate windows. He grasps the light and squeezes it. When he opens his hand, a glowing amber colored marble is there.

“Uh, so, how do I do that?”

“Catch the light in your palm and make it solid.”

“Oh, sure. No problem. Make light solid. Easy peasy,” I say and walk over to the same sunbeam.

When I try to grab the light like he did, nothing happens.

“Maybe it’s that sunbeam that’s the problem, since you already grabbed it,” I say, trying to appease him and go to the next one, and the next. Each time, reality reminds me it exists by laughing in my face. “I feel like an idiot,” I say, and he sighs. “I suck. Admit it. I suck at magic.”

“This is not the way it’s supposed to happen,” he says as he sits on the floor, his head falling into his hands.

Defeated, miserable, and distraught, he pouts. I sit and give him a pat on the back.

“I wish I was her. Believe me, I do. You’re a jerk, but you’re a handsome jerk. Who’s not into me. Most everyone else is though, so I’m not worried.”

“Belvedere says it’s the human body—it’s nothing like living as a god—but visions of her plague me. If I look somewhat like who I was, why wouldn’t she?”

“No clue.”

“If you’re a pawn and not a minion, then the Winter Witch cursed you too. I’m not so sure being near each other is best for either of us. We’re at the brink of the apocalypse.

Somehow, you are at the center, perhaps to create disasters, obstacles. From what I’ve gathered, you’ve been disastrous since birth.”

“Let me make sure I’m hearing you right—you’re saying every messed-up thing that’s ever happened to me—”

“—Is part of a curse to keep me and Flora apart, to end our reigns as gods. Which means the death of Spring and Summer for eternity. No growth, only decay. Nothing to harvest. Only cold darkness year-round. If I die, if she dies, both seasons die with us. Gods are immortal for a reason.”

“You’re a god now? An actual god?” I say and snort. Talk about ego problems.

“I am the God of Summer. Flora is the Goddess of Spring. That day, we were to commit to each other for eternity.”

“But I was born the day before—”

“Of course, the Winter Witch knew what she would do to us before she did it. She was prepared. With you and who knows who else.”

“Basically, you’re saying all the tragedy in my life is because of you and your girlfriend and the old hag who hates you, and now the end of the world is going to happen because of me.”

“Put in the most remedial of ways, yes.”

Talk about screwing someone over. I’m cursed because of this crap I ain’t got nothing to do with no how? Who does that to a baby that ain’t even born? There’s no way I’m causing the end of the friggin’ world. This winter witch can keep dreaming. She picked the wrong girl… woman… whatever. And if I am cursed, and she’s the one who cursed me, I wonder.

“Let’s say I find your goddess for you. Does my curse break too?”

“If your misfortune results from this curse, yes, it would, in theory, break too. But if we find her, Mandi, I promise you, I will break the curse for you. I am a God. When I have the full force of my powers returned to me, I will remove your curse and bless you. You have my bond.”

“Does this blessing include magical real estate? Specifically, I could use a rent-free penthouse with magical perks, like built in cleaning and laundry. And one of those enormous gardens the size of Central Park like you got. That’d be incredible.”

He cracks a smile and almost laughs, but I’m not kidding.

“I’m being serious, Jack. If you could hook me up, I’d appreciate it. Living without disasters…” I stop and think about what that might be like. “I never thought about that as a possibility. That’d be…” Knowing nothing was going to happen to me would change everything.

“I guess that’d be blessing enough. But I’m homeless. I don’t want to go back to Danny.”

“How would that even be an option?”

“What do you mean? I got nowhere else to go.”

“What about a friend who might let you stay on their couch?”

“Nah, I’m not a social person.”

“You don’t appear to be introverted. In fact, you should be far more introverted than you are.”

“Alright, I’ll ignore that because you’re stressed. Don’t you worry, Jack. A witch-goddess, I may not be, but I fix screwups for a living. You’re looking at an expert—this is what I do. I got this,” I assure him. “Come on. Let’s blow this sunbeam. We got work to do. I got a plan. Magic us on out of here.”

“I knew it wouldn’t work,” he says with a sigh, takes out a golden whistle, and blows it, but I don’t hear nothing.

“Dog whistle?” I ask with an arched brow. “I’m not riding no dog back to the city, magic or not.”

“Dragon whistle.”

As the vaulted ceiling opens to the sky, a massive golden dragon glides down and lands, perching on the top of the wall. A staircase of light materializes, and we climb it to a landing.

What I did not expect was to find myself at the center of a magical apocalypse.

Lucky for the fate of the universe, I ain’t new to this type of stuff. And it don’t hurt I got a hot wizard to stare at while I save the planet from an eternal winter.

Yeah, alright, I may have caused the problem, but it wasn’t intentional. And I’m going to be the one to fix it, so it’s like it cancels itself out in a way.

But whatever. Don’t worry. I got this… Probably.

Release Day Review ~ Double Vision by Elizabeth Hunter ~ @EHunterWrites @valentine_pr_ #PWF ~ Paranormal Women's Fiction

Successful realtor Julia Brooks moves to the quirky neighborhood of Vista de Lirio in the California desert and meets a riotous cast of eccentric characters. But her semi-retirement is spoiled when she finds the body of the neighborhood lothario dead in the kitchen of her brand new listing. Even more complicated? She also meets his ghost.

Double Vision is all new paranormal women's fiction and the first book in the Vista de Lirio Mysteries from USA Today Bestseller, Elizabeth Hunter, author of the Glimmer Lake series, the Elemental Mysteries, and the Irin Chronicles.

My Review:

Double Vision is another wonderful book by one of my favorite authors!

I enjoyed Julia's character and those in her new neighborhood. Vista de Lirio has a lot of quirky characters and I enjoyed the setting. Julia is looking for a change of pace and finds it when a dead body shows up in one of her new listings. Now, Julia and her new friends team up to solve the murder. I love that Julia and her friends, Evy and Vivian, discover they have supernatural abilities. The story is fun and the mystery complex.

The author writes books that require emotional responses from the reader. You can’t read her books without feeling exactly what she is portraying. All of Elizabeth's novels reach deep within my emotional center and trigger reactionary responses. These types of books are my favorite. The emotions don't have to always include tears; it is just the ability to invoke proper emotional responses to scenarios being played out.

I was provided a copy of this book to read.
