The Pros and Cons of Writing Young Adult Cozy Mysteries

Like almost anything in life, there are pros and cons to doing something. And, unless you’re an idiot or masochist, if the pros don’t outweigh the cons then you should be walking away from whatever you’re considering. When it comes to writing genre fiction, a big decision is the actual genre you’re going to attempt to write, followed by the point of view from which to tell the story, which is for another discussion. Since my books are cross-genre books in the Young Adult (YA), New Adult (NA), and Cozy Mystery genres, below are what I consider the main pros and cons for writing in these genres. And although I list five “pros,” the very first “pro” is by far the biggest and most important one, easily outweighing the cons all by itself.

PROS

1.     The YA/NA/Cozy genres give me a sense of freedom to have fun with the writing. I can create over-the-top characters, quirky characters, funny characters, crazy characters, and more. I can take pets and humanize them with their antics and traits without getting into talking dogs and flying cats. Although…hmmm.

2.      I can make the protagonist, Sara Donovan in my Mauzzy & Me Mystery Series, intelligent but imperfect with fun traits that readers can relate to, such as clumsiness, issues with technology, and underestimating what it takes to get things done—like studying for an exam, judging drive times, and setting up a plug-and-play printer. Yet in the end, Sara is a determined problem-solver who always cracks the case. I liken her to a modern-day Nancy Drew, with a fun twist. Or two. In fact, the Independent Book Review writes: “Sara is a classic amateur sleuth ala Veronica Mars or Nacy Drew. She’s sharp, determined, and at times in over her head, but she isn’t afraid to ask those around her for help either.”

3.      Speaking of fun twists, I can inject humor into the story, which is important to me. I want readers to be entertained, to include laughing as they read. Life has too much drama so I want my books to allow the reader to put Life aside for a while and escape to a world of mystery, fun, and laughter. This becomes much more difficult to pull off outside YA/NA/Cozy.

4.      The genres allow me to develop plots that stretch the imagination without crossing over into fantasy, which is also huge in YA but not something I’m going to attempt to write. Fantasy world building is too daunting a task for me to attempt to tackle. But because YA readers are incredibly bright and voracious readers, I can craft complex plots that ignite their imaginations and sense of adventurism with things like treasure hunts, museum heists, smuggling operations, and high-stakes high-rewards contests with puzzles and riddles.

5.      YA is one of the fastest-growing genres with also a large appeal to adults, which is obviously great, although…

CONS

1.      Because YA fiction is fast-growing, the young adult space is becoming flooded and over-populated it can be hard to stand out.

2.      New Adult is a struggling genre that is misunderstood and consequently not really recognized. Some publishers view the genre as a failed attempt at bridging the gap between YA and adult fiction, while others don’t even consider it a genre of its own but rather a subgenre of YA or adult fiction. A few years ago, it was called a “hot” genre, but I think that was just the publishing industry attempting to jumpstart the genre’s marketing and, in the end, since nobody really understands it, NA has kinda faded away.

3.      Cozy mysteries are not taken seriously, even though there are many cozy mystery series with quite complex plots, including Jana DeLeon’s Miss Fortune series and my Mauzzy & Me Mystery series. That might seem like a shameless plug for my books but Kirkus Reviews writes about my newest release Lucky Secrets: “An enjoyable, complexly plotted series installment that promises more mysteries and thrills to come.” Like the NA genre (or subgenre?), I think cozy mysteries are misunderstood, possibly because of the “cozy” label which I suspect is to convey the lightheartedness of the genre. I believe hardcore mystery enthusiasts can enjoy cozies if they just give the genre a chance.

4.      Like cozies not being taken seriously, as a grown man breaking into the YA or cozy mysteries space, I’m not the typical author in the genre so there is an inherent uphill climb to convince readers my stories are worth their time. Take James Patterson as a sort of anti-example. While he does have several YA series out there, he didn’t get his start in the genre but rather entered with considerable clout.

5.      Although YA fiction cuts across generations and is enjoyed by older adults of all ages, others underestimate young adult readers so when they hear “young adult,” they think you write children’s books, which couldn’t be further from the truth. As noted earlier, YA plots can be quite complex because the genre’s readers have depth that demand a complexity to the story.

A big shoutout to Sapphyria’s Books for letting me share my book and thoughts on writing YA/NA/Cozy Mysteries. It was fun stepping back to look at the genres from a critical perspective and coming to the same conclusion I reached over ten years ago—writing books crossing over these three genres was the right decision as it gives me such freedom and joy during the writing process. And if you can’t have fun doing something, then don’t do it, as that’s the biggest con of all.

College student Sara Donovan is in the homestretch of graduating when a mysterious package arrives with an invitation to an exclusive contest. One that will drastically change the winner’s life. Included are unsettling photographs from forgettable chapters in her life and a threatening note strongly suggesting she participate.

With no good options, Sara enters the contest and finds herself at a fabulous mansion up against eight formidable opponents, each with a dark secret and all racing to solve seven levels of riddles and puzzles.

After a contestant’s body is discovered, Sara contemplates dropping out when another package arrives, its chilling contents making clear she’s at the center of a dangerous game with deadly consequences if she quits. But what it doesn’t say is—what happens if she wins?

Read Excerpt One:

I spent the first two hours of every workday by myself while Finn was off with Bertie drinking his lunch, presumably trying to forget his ex-wife. On my first day way back on the fifth of August, I enthusiastically reported to work. I was stoked, ready to assist the unrenowned yet Majelski-recommended, and sorta sober, Melvin “Finn” Finnegan, with taking down perps, crooks, and degenerates. Instead, I spent that day and most of the last seven months digging up dirt on two-timing husbands, boyfriends, and insurance fraudsters, and tracking down the last location on the Internet for delinquent debtors and the occasional bond jumper. Truth be told, the only time I spent out of the office was walking from my car to the dang building and then back again for the trip home to Sketchville. But working the streets on a high-profile case? Any case?

Not a chance.

A typical weekday for me consisted of business and criminology classes in the morning, then grabbing a quick lunch of fifty-cent noodles and a cola before jumping in my traumatized hatchback more the color of gray primer than its original black and flying up I-59 to one of the more questionable areas of Birmingham for a scintillating five hours as a part-time receptionist and researcher for Finn. And if that wasn’t enough to light up my life each and every fricking day, my drive home was a daily battle-royale with crazed Birmingham commuters reminding this soon-to-be college graduate, hopefully, that I was no match for their unparalleled skill at breaking every traffic law in the book while exhibiting quite the fluency in sign language.

The Nephilim's Fate by Eliza Hampstead ~ #FantasyRomance #Vampires #Witches #Nephilim #Angels #Demons ~Meet the Characters from Nephilim's Fate ~ @GoddessFish

The Nephilim's Fate

Eliza Hampstead

Please welcome Eliza Hampstead to the blog today!

Thank you so much for having me as a guest! I’m thrilled to share an introduction to the characters of The Nephilim’s Fate.

Alissia

Alissia is a brilliant scientist who relies on logic and reason to explain the world. She starts the story unaware of her magical abilities and leads a fairly ordinary life until she meets Nate. Her world is turned upside down when she discovers that she’s a witch. Alissia's journey is about self-discovery as she grapples with her new reality. Her scientific mind battles with the magic she must now embrace.

Her determination is what makes her character so compelling. She is on a mission to challenge the ancient texts that say she and Nate can’t be together. Her love for Nate drives her to challenge the oldest magical laws, fighting for a future she knows they deserve.

Nate

Nate is a Nephilim—a half-angel, half-human warrior with a strong sense of duty. He’s bound by ancient rules, one of which prohibits a relationship between witches and Nephilim. Nate is drawn to Alissia despite the dangers, and though he tries to resist, his feelings grow stronger. His character is a study in contrasts—torn between his sworn duty and the love he feels for Alissia. Nate’s quiet intensity and loyalty make him both a fierce protector and a conflicted soul.

Additional Characters

The Nephilim’s Fate introduces characters who will become vital in later books. You’ll meet Azariel, a powerful Nephilim who plays a key role in The Nephilim’s Fear, and Andrew, a human entangled in the supernatural conflict. Their dynamic fuels much of the tension in the second book.

In The Nephilim’s Finesse, Raph, a hardened Nephilim, forms a complicated bond with Victorija, a fierce vampire introduced as the villain in the first two books.

By the time you reach The Nephilim’s Fellowship, these characters must unite in an epic battle through hell to save the world.

Alissia and Nate's story is just the beginning of a larger world where love, magic, and survival collide in a war that spans realms. Dive into their journey and get ready for a world full of conflict, romance, and magic.

Genre:

 Fantasy Romance

About the Book:

She will find a way, even if it leads to a war between Heaven and Hell.

In the heart of London, Alissia's ordinary life takes a thrilling turn when she is attacked by bloodthirsty vampires. When Nate, the man she dreamed about for years, swoops in to save her, her reality shatters as she discovers a shocking truth: she's a witch, and he's a Nephilim. But their love is cursed, forbidden by ancient laws that threaten to tear their world apart.

As old rivalries resurface and dark secrets come to light, Alissia and Nate must confront their deepest fears and fight for their love, even if it means igniting a war between Heaven and Hell.

With unforgettable characters, steamy romance, and gripping plot twists, this captivating new fantasy series by award-winning author Eliza Hampstead delves into a world of angels and demons, forbidden love, and the inexorable power of fate.

If you crave the intensity of Shadowhunters with an added dose of spice, don't miss out on this spellbinding series!

Read Excerpt Two:

My heart stopped for a moment before resuming its work at double speed. I gulped. Now was the time for the truth. Seraphina stood up and walked to her desk; when she turned back, she held a photo in her hand. My heart was beating frantically as Seraphina held out the picture. I nearly didn’t take it. I suddenly wanted to live in ignorance, yet my body reacted before I could decide and took the photo. I looked at a woman who resembled me a great deal. She also had dark hair and green eyes, her nose was a bit longer than mine, and her lips were thinner. However, it was clear that she was my kin.

“Her name was Keira Shepard. Your father is still unknown; the coven thinks he was a human and unimportant to her. She never told anybody about him.”

Keira Shepard. A beautiful name that fitted her. I wanted to know everything about her, right now. “What do you know of her? Is her family an old witch family? Did she leave anything behind?”

“She was from an old family. To our knowledge, it had died with her until now. Her belongings went to the coven after her mother—your grandmother—died ten years ago. Her file states she could glimpse into the future. She was much into the second sight. If you want to, I can ask for the whole file, including the documentation about her going missing.”

“That would be splendid. Thank you.” I tried to say more, but my thoughts were spinning. I had the name and face of my birth mother and a thousand questions.

The Start…and the End of an Era by M.T. Bass, Author of Racing the Dream Release Blog Tour October 17, 2023 @Owlworks @GoddessFish

Racing the Dream

by M.T. Bass

Genre:

Action and Adventure

About the Book:

“If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough.” ~Mario Andretti

Strap down the 5-point harness in the cockpit of a Formula 1 air racing plane and join Hawk as he chases victory! First on their amateur make-shift course over Antelope Acres, then on the re-emerging pylon racing circuit in the early 1960s. And finally, as Hawk battles 7 other top-level pilots at the very first National Air Racing Championship event in Reno!

Abandoning the cloth and his African mission, Father Bob returns to his slide rule to design Hawk’s racer. Sparks, his loyal yet surly mechanic, built it and wrenching both on the engine—as well as on Hawk—keeps them at the front of the pack. Home again in Los Angeles from behind the stick of a T-6 Texan as a mercenary in the Congo civil war, air racing is a new aviation adventure for Hawk. Ride along as he tangles with fellow pilots in “uncooperative formation flying” at two-hundred miles per hour a mere fifty feet off the ground!

And then one day cruising home to Van Nuys airport, Hawk spies Allison, a beach-blonde surfer girl, insanely wing walking on the top wing of a Stearman PT-17 bi-plane. He quickly sets his sights on her.

Fly low…Fly fast…and Turn Left…

Read an Excerpt:

Chapter 1 — Antelope Acres

I chased Scotty down the long straightaway. Three hundred feet back. A hundred feet off the ground. One hundred seventy knots.

Quick looks at the panel: Thirty-six hundred RPM. Look: engine oil pressure—green. Look: oil temperature—green.

All good.

Banking hard into the “pylon” at W Avenue G and Myrick Canyon Road over the desert, a shadow on the ground to my left crawled toward my British Racing Green colored wing. He had to be outside. You can’t look to the right. It’s just not safe. But the sun was behind us…

I lofted a bit in the eighty-degree turn—climbed twenty feet or so—then quickly dove back down to close another hundred and fifty feet on Scotty, picking up a bit of his wake turbulence.

Rolling out and down the front straightaway, I found smooth air twenty-five feet above his hot red Jensen Cassutt.

We used the crossroads, a pile of rocks, a little hump in the desert sand, and a windmill water pump to set up our three-mile oval course. I knew Scotty from Van Nuys, but the other three guys were new, from other SoCal airports. We were all on “Company Frequency,” one-two-three point four-five. We joined up in a loose formation for a pace lap, then got down to business with a flying start.

Like Henry Ford said, racing began five minutes after the second airplane was built. And that’s where Father Bob came in. There were a ton of modified Cassutts out there. Anybody could buy the design for $20. But Father Bob used his engineering skills to develop and, with Sparks’ help, build White Hawk Redux, an 85 horsepower, Continental C-85 Goodyear racer that we were pushing over two hundred miles an hour.

It was all unofficial because, after fifty years of glorious history, airplane racing fell off the face of the earth for a while in the Sixties. There were no sanctioned races around anymore, so we made up our own course, kicking up dust devils and rooster tails over the desolation of Antelope Acres. Our version of California street drags.

Of course, I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I was learning fast.

Around the windmill and up to the forty-foot hump in the sand. I chased Scotty down foot by foot. I knew I could take him.

Only two laps left. It was now or never.

Banking hard into the crossroads, I juiced the power up near four thousand RPM and pulled back on the stick to take Scotty up and outside.

But dammit, I missed him—

In my peripheral vision, a Tweety-yellow racer on my right came toward me.

I flattened my wings and rolled off the power sweeping below him to keep from colliding. But I caught the tornado of his wingtip vortices and involuntarily flipped inverted.

A Joshua tree bloomed overhead in my canopy as I arced upside-down towards the ground at two-hundred-fifty feet. Gravity pulled my shoulders down against the straps of my five-point harness.

Without thinking, back pressure on the stick moved quickly forward to illogically raise the nose with a nudge of left rudder to roll level and maxing out the power…

Please welcome M.T. Bass to the blog today!

The Start…and the End of an Era

I began writing Racing the Dream in June of last year. The plot unfolds with Hawk strapping into a Formula 1 cockpit during the revival of pylon racing in the early Sixties and the climax of the book was always going to be the inaugural 1964 National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada.

In March of this year, the organizers announced that the local airport authority would no longer approve holding the event at Reno-Stead Airport in the future. After sixty years, 2023 marked the end of an era.

As I’ve written here before, my book covers are designed to be author-specific rather than created differently based on the genre of the novel. With the top and bottom borders and the cartoonish front image, just like on Kurt Vonnegut or Carl Hiaasen covers, I want readers to be able to identify that my Mysteries, Sci-fi stories, Men’s Adventure tales, and, yes, even Romances, were definitely mine.

So, I followed the same format searching for photos of Formula 1 airplanes racing around pylons, until I heard the news that 2023 would be the final year of racing. Doing more research, I discovered a 1964 poster featuring the F-8F Bearcat and the Cosmic Wind Formula 1 plane, named Little Miss Reno, owned by Bill Stead, who founded the Reno Races. I had found the image for my cover.

The only problem was getting permission to use the artwork, as  I had already set the publication date for August 28, right before the last races in September. When I contacted the folks in Reno in June they were busy running their Pylon Racing Seminar for competing pilots. And after that, they were slammed with organizing the final event.

Getting a bit nervous about my cover, I needed an alternative, so I tried using Artificial Intelligence to come up with a cover image.  It was pretty much a disaster—so much for AI taking over the world.  I needed airplanes turning left, but half the time the AI images were banking right. And for some reason, it always put smoke behind the planes, which was unrealistic and unnecessary.

I tried to recreate the basic layout of the poster with photoshopped Formula 1 racers. The image was okay, but not what I really wanted. Then, thankfully, at the beginning of August, Reno finally approved using their poster artwork and that is what ended up on the cover.

I attended the final air race a couple of weeks ago and it was a bucket-list check-off. I finally met and thanked the great folks there who helped me honor the great history of the Reno Air Races.

Book Feature, Excerpt, and Guest Post ~ Immortal Divorce Court, Volume 1: My Ex-Wife Said Go To Hell by Kirk Zurosky

Please welcome Kirk Zurosky to the blog today!!

Tell us about Immortal Divorce Court Volume One: My Ex-Wife Said Go to Hell

This book is pure entertainment in the form of the zany adventures of the intrepid immortal vampire assassin, Sirius Sinister, and his vampire Maltese, Garlic. Immortal Divorce Court is perfect for the beach, or sitting in your biggest most comfortable chair with a glass of wine, or your favorite cocktail. It is at its core a novel that is snarky, romantic, sexy, and it will have you laughing out loud.

2. What inspired you to create the Immortal Divorce Court series?

I have enjoyed writing from an early age, crafting stories that always had a healthy dose of fantasy. But, then life and my career as a lawyer got in the way, and I never seemed to find the time to sit down and write. I was also not in the right mental place to be creative. I am a big believer that if you are not where you should be in your life, the universe has a way of making that happen. You may not like it, or even realize it, but I do think you end up where you are supposed to be, and with who you are supposed to be with.

So, after twenty plus years as a lawyer, I went through a divorce which ended up being the best thing for me. Not only did I eventually meet the love of my life, but I also was in the right place to be creative once again. I also realized that I was pretty good at writing love scenes. I guess it is true that you write what you know!

Immortal Divorce Court was born out of these life experiences, and is based on the premise of what happens when an immortal creature of myth makes awful relationship choices. And, he gets taken to Immortal Divorce Court by his slighted paramours, pisses off some powerful entities with his irreverence, and also makes lifelong (really lifelong!) friends on the journey.

3. Tell us more about the main character Sirius Sinister. Why is he so prone to relationship faux-pas?

When the story begins, Sirius is headstrong and naïve. He thinks he is making the proper decisions, but when members of the opposite sex are involved his hormones overrule any vestige of logic and good sense. I think this makes Sirius very relatable to the readers of Immortal Divorce Court. Who among us hasn’t made a bad relationship choice because emotions, or hormones, carried the day, even when it sure as Hell wasn’t in our best interest to do so? He is also very relatable because he repeats relationship mistakes without learning from them the first time. Many of us get in the same patterns with our relationships, and don’t even know why we do what we do. Sirius, however, has to deal with Immortal Divorce Court, so his consequences are far more hellish than most of ours!

4. What was the inspiration for Garlic, the vampire Maltese, in Immortal Divorce Court?

Our family includes our Maltese, Daisy, who was the inspiration for the vampire Maltese, Garlic. Daisy is a small dog with a huge personality, and I am convinced that she thinks that we are there to do her bidding. She has trained us to give her treats, to pet her, and to take her outside whenever she wants to go. If we forget to put her food down, she will let us know that it is not acceptable. She is also sweet and protective, and is one of my favorite people on the planet.

5. What was the most enjoyable part of crafting this book?

I loved writing the dialogue in Immortal Divorce Court, especially when it involved Sirius Sinister and his paramours. Anytime you can write about relationships, and all that come with them, it really lends itself to some humorous and sexy dialogue. When people like each other, and conversely don’t like each other, conveying the characters’ emotions is really an absolute joy to do. Sirius Sinister reacts like a “typical” guy to drama with the opposite sex, which is poorly, and without thinking it through, so the dialogue is real life, and real hilarious. The courtroom scenes have a special place in my heart because writing the lines of Sirius’ lawyer, Maximillian Justice, who says and does things over the course of the series that any lawyer would love to say and do, had me laughing out loud to myself!

6. Where can our readers connect with you and learn more about the Immortal Divorce Court series?

I would recommend readers check out my website www.kirkzurosky.com where they can learn about the upcoming books in the series. Immortal Divorce Court Volume Two: A Sirius Education is scheduled to come out in the Fall. Daisy has also been working really hard on her Dog Blog, where you can learn about the books and the self-proclaimed world famous Maltese from her canine perspective. You can also check out the Sirius Sinister™ Gear store. We have come up with some really cool Immortal Divorce Court merchandise. But when he’s served divorce papers by Bloodsucker Number One—a shady woman from his past—he realizes there’s a major problem: he was never even married to her, or so he thought. Regardless of the truth, Sirius is put under the jurisdiction of Immortal Divorce Court.

You would think by now he’d know having sex can lead to horrific consequences like marriage, children, and ex-wives—but some habits just won’t die. Leaving his faithful vampire Maltese, Garlic, behind, Sirius travels to court to defend himself with the help of his demon attorney, Maximillian Justice. Unfortunately, the trial quickly spirals out of control, and Sirius is banished to hell for a hundred years.

When Sirius finally escapes, he ends up in the Caribbean where he meets his next paramour: the Howler. After a wild romp with his new werewolf lover under the lure of a full blood moon, he finds himself becoming the father of a litter of pups—but, the Howler and her Pack want to put the dead in deadbeat dad. Luckily, Sirius is saved by the Queen of the Merfolk, who comes with a hidden agenda even as they fall in love. Can he make it work with the Queen, or will he have to head to Immortal Divorce Court once again as yet another relationship flounders?

I could do nothing but wait for the deputies to return and, hopefully, free me. I was just beginning to grow a little bit crazy, trading insults with the boil, when I heard footsteps approaching. Through the door came a broad-shouldered figure wearing a traveling cloak as blue as the sky with a large cowl draped over its head. It moved slowly but deliberately, like its knees had suffered many an injury, and stopped suddenly just out of the boil’s range.

“Drat,” said the boil to our mysterious guest. “How did you know to stop just outside of spitting range?”

“I’ve read Bartholomew’s Treatise on Enchanted Boils,” the deep voice behind the cowl said. “Save your pus for a less well-read guest.”

“Who are you?” By this point I’d had so many guests that I was not remotely bothered by my privates being on full display. “Are you a special warlock envoy of Immortal Divorce Court, sent to try your magic on these accursed chains?”

“Well, Sirius Sinister,” said my guest, “I have actually been waiting a few centuries to make your acquaintance. I grew tired of waiting for you to come to me, so I decided to come to you. And seeing how you have been on the wrong end of a few bad decisions, I figured now was the perfect time.” He drew his hood back, revealing a perfectly clean-shaven head that glistened in the eerie light of the chains. “I am Hedley Edrick, but you can call me ‘the Teacher of Teachers,’ ‘the Master of Masters,’ ‘the Scholar of Scholars,’ ‘the Sage of Sages,’ and yes, you guessed it, I am the most learned creature on this amazing planet of ours.”

“What a cocky cock!” opined the boil.

I smiled wryly. “It is a pleasure to finally meet you,” I said. “I always meant to attend your school at some point in the last two hundred years. But instead I seem to have wandered off onto an all too different path.” I rattled my chains. “Of course, I have been getting some hard lessons all the same, though.”

“So I see,” Hedley replied, his eyes twinkling. “But it is never too late to find the proper path. Sometimes life is like making sausage— the process is not something that is pleasant to look at but ends up as something you really wanted all along.”

“What I really want is to be free from these chains so I can go to Immortal Divorce Court and fight for my girls,” I said, feeling a tear come to my eye, which I fought unsuccessfully to blink back in.

“I will free you from those chains,” Hedley said. “If you promise that you will do just one little thing for me.”

“Anything!” I said. “Just name your price!”

“No matter your result at the IDC, whether you are jailed for a thousand years or are free to live unfettered with your girls, you must promise to come to my school and study for as long as I say,” he said.

“I will,” I said. “Not a problem. Now get me out of these chains!”

“Swear,” Hedley said.

“Shit!” said the boil. “Are we free yet?”

“Fine, I swear, I swear,” I said. “Now come on, Edrick, get a move on, those faeries will be coming back any minute now. I can feel it.”

“Swear also to never give up in trying to find the purest love that lifts your heart up and makes all well with the world.”

Damn, that certainly wasn’t a question I wanted to be asked while chained to a wall with my breeches at my ankles and some strange hooded man in the room. But hopefully, this wasn’t that kind of party.

Guest Post: Flaws Make the Man in Christi Caldwell’s In Bed with the Earl

My newest release, In Bed with the Earl, features an unlikely Regency hero. He was born to nobility, was kidnapped, and grew up in the roughest streets of London, as a ‘tosher’…a sewer scavenger. Nothing about Malcom or his past is in any way conventional, but he also represents how our pasts shape who we are. And there is no doubting, his past molded him into who he is… a man who doesn’t let people close…and who protects what he does have. Which is why…when he does meet Verity, someone who wants to be close for him (first, for reasons related to her work…and then, the more she knows him, simply because she’s falling for him) he resists.

People are impacted by life, in different ways. We all have many layers; and for Malcom, those layers are protective ones; a shield to protect himself from being hurt…because he’s already known so much. Yes, he’s coarse and ragged, and rough, but beneath that, readers (I hope) will see what Verity sees…that he has a good heart, and is deserving of a happily-ever-after, not only for who he is to others, but because, with the life he’s lived, he deserves it for himself.

Read an Excerpt from In Bed with the Earl by Christi Caldwell:

“May I help you, Miss Lovelace?”

That lethal purr sounded from the front of the room, a silky taunt.

With a gasp, the page slipped from her fingers and fluttered to a damning place at her feet.

Mr. Bram yanked the cloths from his eyes, and he took in Verity beside Mr. North’s open desk. And all the color left his face. “Oh, bloody hell.”

Oh, bloody hell, indeed. And all thoughts of having been rescued by a savior, and even the importance of this story, fled in the face of the danger staring back at her in his ruthless gaze.

He is going to kill me…

Verity swallowed hard. “If you’ll excuse us?” Mr. North murmured.

Verity took a step toward the door.

“Not you, Miss Lovelace.”

Mr. Bram climbed awkwardly to his feet. “Oi’m so sorry,” he said hoarsely, an apology that went ignored by Mr. North.

Her heart lurched. Every muscle in her body lurched. This was bad. Which would have been the understated statement of the century. She curled her toes into the soles of her borrowed slippers and followed the stranger’s—nay, he was no longer a stranger in name—the Earl of Maxwell’s gaze. As dread slowly wound its way through her, Verity curled those digits all the tighter.

And as it was all the easier to focus on matters within her control, she looked to her older patient as he limped across the room. “Be sure and try out those remedies, Mr. Bram.” She felt Mr. North sharpen his gaze on her person. “And I’ve something that might help with that limp, too,” she promised.

The older man stopped. “Do ya, now?”

She may as well have promised him the sun, moon, and stars for the way he looked at her. “Oh, yes. You’ll require—”

“Bram,” Mr. North snapped, and the older man instantly scuttled off, but not before flashing her an apologetic look.

“It is really not Mr. Bram’s fault. He’s not done anything wrong. You really shouldn’t take your…”

Not taking his eyes from her person, he reached behind him with an agonizing slowness and drew the door shut. Click. That soft but decisive snap that served as a seal of her fate.

Just like that, Verity’s bravado flagged. She clutched at the fabric of her skirts. Wanting to be the composed reporter gathering her research, and undaunted in the face of peril.

And she came up … pathetically empty.

That cold smile affixed to hard lips remained in place, a grin that no person would dare mistake for anything but the feral threat it was. He pushed away from the door and started a languid stroll toward her.

Had she truly been relieved about determining the identity of her savior and captor?

It was now all muddled.

“Now, Miss Lovelace? If that is your name?”

“M-my name?” Wasn’t it? Even her name eluded her in that moment. “Of course it is.” Her voice ended on a croak as he drew ever closer; the ice that frosted his gaze sprang her to the reality now facing her, the menace that spilled from his broad frame. Mayhap she’d been wrong. Because she’d experience with earls—was, in fact, the daughter of one. They were nothing like the predatory devil that stalked her now. “I am Miss Verity Lovelace. What grounds would I have to lie?” She hurried to place the chair of his desk between them as another barrier.

He stopped his pursuit. “And how may I help you?”

Ironically, the stranger—the gentleman—could have uttered no truer words than those.

They fortified her, and sent resolve creeping back into her spine as she brought her shoulders back. Verity met his gaze squarely. “Are you the Earl of Maxwell?”

Except, she already knew as much … she simply sought the confirmation from the gentleman’s mouth.

His eyes grew shuttered, but not before she caught the flash of horror in their blue-black depths.

He was a man unaccustomed to being challenged. And his unsettledness eased away further frissons of fear. Verity slid out from behind his desk chair and glided slowly across the room. She stopped when only a handful of steps separated her from the very stranger who’d put a knife to her earlier that night.

“Do I look like an earl?” he countered, belated with that reply—that deliberately evasive one.

Taking that as an invitation to study him, Verity peered at Mr. North. That slightly hooked nose, which had been broken one or more times, did little to conceal the aquiline appendage that served as a signal of his birthright. The small white nicks and scars merely marred a canvas of otherwise flawless high, chiseled cheeks and a hard, square jawline.

Glorious. Her pulse throbbed a beat harder. His features, melded with those flaws, only served to mark him beautiful in his masculinity.

His mouth crept up in a tight, one-sided smile that didn’t meet pitiless eyes. “Did you have a good look, Miss Lovelace?”

He’d noted her appreciation. Verity’s cheeks burnt, and she curled her toes into the soles of her borrowed slippers. He merely sought to disconcert her. It was a familiar state she’d found herself many times before, with many men before him. Feigning nonchalance, Verity gave her head a little toss. “You have the look and the tones of an earl,” she pointed out. “And more…” She gestured to those private missives she’d availed herself to. “You have letters written regarding the Baron Bolingbroke.” Verity stretched up on her tiptoes so she could at least hold his gaze and not be peered down at. “Therefore, Mr. North, I would say you are, in fact, the Earl of Maxwell, after all.”

About the Book:

To solve a mystery that’s become the talk of the ton, no clues run too deep for willful reporter Verity Lovelace. Not even in the sewers of London. That’s precisely where she finds happily self-sufficient scavenger Malcom North, lost heir to the Earl of Maxwell. Now that Verity’s made him front-page news, what will he make of her?

Kidnapped as a child, with no memories of his well-heeled past, Malcom prefers the grimy spoils of the culverts to the gilded riches of society. Damn the feisty beauty who exposed the contented tosher to a parade of fortune-hunting matchmakers. How to keep them at bay? Verity must pretend to be his wife. She owes him.

The intimacy of this necessary arrangement—Verity and Malcom thrust together in close quarters—soon sparks an irresistible heat. But when the charade ends, the danger begins. Will love be enough to protect them from a treacherous plot devised to ruin them?

Thoughts on Adaptations from Page to Screen
By Stephen Zimmer

The new year is underway and began with the Dark Sun Dawn trilogy being complete with the release of When Shadows Fall toward the end of 2019. The novel was not the only new release in the Rayden Valkyrie Universe to take place last year. The eBook novella Prowling the Darkness emerged in the spring, and then, later in the summer, the proof-of-concept TV pilot Rayden Valkyrie: Saga of a Lionheart was made public on the Seventh Star Press YouTube channel.

Starring Instagram sensation Brock O’Hurn and Sol Geirsdottir as Ragnar Stormbringer and Rayden Valkyrie, the show introduces an ensemble cast and original storyline that is designed to be told across a full season of episodes.

You can watch the entire show for yourself, absolutely free, at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhXJatO5gYM&t=34s

While the tv pilot project involved an entirely new storyline that was not previously in a book format, I get asked often about adapting the Rayden Valkyrie novels and novellas for the screen. The big challenge whenever an adaptation takes place is that the medium of film and books are truly apples and oranges; they are very different entities in terms of storytelling.

With books, you can go into the minds of the characters and reveal their thoughts, perspectives, and feelings. With visual media, you must show everything onscreen and through dialogue. An adaptation must pass through this kind of filter when translating from a novel to a screenplay.

Further, the events in a visual media project have to be depicted in an hour, or possibly ninety-minute or two-hour setting if a feature film, whereas the events in a book can be as expansive as the author can imagine. This why it is often estimated that close to ninety percent of a book never makes it onscreen.

The structure must also be considered. A book that has a more linear narrative tends to be more effective in bringing to the screen, where a more ensemble cast literary work tends to be a little tougher to portray in a television or film medium. This is why I find series such as Game of Thrones to be particularly impressive in being able to succeed with a broader ensemble kind of structure, founded upon the character threads of George R. R. Martin’s novels.

The stories of Rayden Valkyrie that are currently available in the five eBook novellas of the growing Rayden Valkyrie Tales, and the book trilogy of the Dark Sun Dawn Saga (Heart of a Lion, Thunder Horizon, and When Shadows Fall), do have a linear narrative with the focus being on Rayden Valkyrie and her experiences and adventures. They are very adaptable to screenplay formats and I am absolutely confident would result in television shows or feature films that would have a wide appeal to the kinds of audiences that enjoy shows like Game of Thrones, or Vikings, or the Witcher.

Of course, readers will always have their own visualizations of what characters look like and what the worlds they inhabit are like. That’s one of the wonderful aspects about books, in that the reader’s own experience of the book shapes their personal perspective and vision. This is why there is inevitable dissonance when casting is down for a film or TV show, locations are selected, and art and visual FX departments begin their designs, because what makes it on screen is almost certain to have differences with the mental picture held by the reader. Even when the author is involved in the adaptation, this factor is present. In my opinion, this is why film or television versions of a beloved, popular novel always spark a bit of a pushback from the readers, even when the adaptation is extremely impressive such as Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies.

Ultimately, I think that the two mediums need to be enjoyed and regarded in their own light. They are never going to match up perfectly as they are two entirely different modes of storytelling. There is a wonderful place for both a written tale and the adapted-to-the-screen version in the hearts of audiences that can enjoy them as distinct entities, and I would love to see that happen to an extensive degree with the world of Rayden Valkyrie.
