My Review:

Grimoires, Spas & Chocolate Straws (Spells & Caramels, #8)Grimoires, Spas & Chocolate Straws by Erin Johnson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Imogen and her friends are going to be on Badlands Island for the foreseeable future. To keep from going crazy, Imogen friends agree to go with the guards to a resort town to help distribute tea to the locals while the guards protect the fishermen. When a man indulging in a signature spa treatment is found dead and the owner of the spa is Sara, the infamous black widow, Imogen can’t help but get involved, especially since her friend Yann shows an interest in Sara.

Grimoires, Spas, and Chocolate Straws was a little bit slow for me at the beginning. It wasn’t until after they reached the resort town and the death occurs that the pacing of the book picked up. The characters are delightful as ever and we get to meet new people and get reacquainted with Horace. His conversation with Imogen is pretty sad and I felt really bad for the life he’s had to live for so long.

Spells and Caramels is a really enjoyable cozy mystery series. There are now eight books and the author still manages to keep things fresh and interesting. Imogene, Hank, Maple, and Sam, along with all the others, are well developed characters. They aren't flawless characters but that's what helps give them, and the story, so much charm. The continued world building describes scenes very well and the continues character development helps the reader develop deeper connections with the characters.

Imogen's character is fun and caring with a bit of emotional baggage making her a very realistic, likable, and interesting character. She has embraced the magic she was born into and she's continually trying to harness and use the magic. Imogen and Maple are wonderful, and I love their friendship. Iggy the flame is the best! He's mouthy but Iggy and Imogen have a great relationship. Hank and Imogen’s relationship continues to grow and strengthen even though they are far from home. I look forward to more of their antics in the next book.

My Review:

Due East, Beasts, and Campfire Feasts begins exactly where book 6 ended. Imogen, Hank, Iggy, and the rest of the group fled to Badlands Island to escape the king. Hank is severely injured but recovering, albeit slowly and spends much of the beginning of the book unconscious. Before the group is able to collect their thoughts and formulate a plan, they are surrounded by soldiers and accused of dispatching their captain. Dragged into the town of Kursuri to face the council, to prove their worth, they must go on a dangerous trek up a mountain for a medicinal herb needed by the townsfolk. During this time, Hank finally comes to but is so overcome with emotions regarding Imogen, his father, almost dying, and the secrets and lies, Hank gives Imogen the cold shoulder. Hank’s attitude gave this book an entirely different feel than the previous six books. I really didn’t like Hank all that much after he woke up.

I have really enjoyed this series. Seven books in and the author keeps things fresh and interesting. Imogene, Hank, Maple, and Sam, along with all the others, are well developed characters. They aren't flawless characters but that's what helps give them, and the story, so much charm. The continued world building describes scenes very well and helps the reader develop deeper connections with the characters.

Imogen's character is fun and caring with a bit of emotional baggage making her a very realistic, likable, and interesting character. She has embraced the magic she was born into and she's continually trying to harness and use the magic. She’s tested in that capacity in this book. Imogene and Maple are wonderful and I love their friendship. Iggy the flame is the best! He's mouthy but Iggy and Imogen have a great relationship. I look forward to more of their antics in the next book.

But when he threatens to hurt the ones she loves the most, she balances her allegiance to the prince with her plan for a covert prison break. Can Imogen keep up family appearances and avoid betraying the kingdom or will her pie-in-the-sky scheme become a recipe for disaster.

About the Book:

This series is wonderful and I am successfully hooked. Six books in and the author keeps things fresh and interesting. Imogene, Hank, Maple, and Sam, along with all the others, are well developed characters. They aren't flawless characters but that's what helps give them, and the story, so much charm. The continued world building provides more information about the magic practiced by various characters, describes scenes very well, and helps the reader develop deeper connections with the characters. I really enjoyed continuing to get to know everyone in book 6.

Airships, Crypts, and Chocolate Chips has really interesting storylines that kept me engaged - from Hank's mentor, Imogen's attendance at royal functions as Hank's girlfriend, and the re-emergence of Horace. I will be honest though, I spent the first few chapters after Horace popped back up lamenting his appearance. Deep down I knew he'd be back but I was getting pretty tired of his double crossing and preying on Imogen's emotions and sense of wanting to know her brother. Horace plays an integral part in book 6 and I'm glad I didn't let him sway whether or not I read/finished the book.

The development of the mystery was two-fold in this book and both were steady and unfolded smoothly. One storyline concerns Hank and the other storyline concerns Horace's plan to spring horrible people out of the highly protected prison system. I enjoyed how the author took different themes and, even though they seemed vastly different, was able to weave them through the book and join them in a wonderful and satisfying conclusion to the book.

Imogen's character is fun and caring with a bit of emotional baggage making her a very realistic, likable, and interesting character. She has embraced the magic she was born into and she's continually trying to harness and use the magic. I'm intrigued by her past, and we learn more about in this installment of the series. Imogene and Maple are wonderful and I love their friendship. I love the dynamics between Imogene and Hank. Iggy the flame is the best! He's mouthy but Iggy and Imogen have a great relationship. After the events of book 6 it will be quite interesting to see where the author takes everyone in the next book. I can't wait!

About the Book:
The big day has finally arrived, and Imogen, Iggy and the bakers head to the Fire Kingdom for Hank and Shaday’s wedding. Imogen is totally fine with it—or so she keeps telling herself. So when Imogen’s repressed feelings magically ruin her baking and she’s banned from the kitchen, she sets herself to finding the killer. Her search leads her through the desert kingdom’s bustling marketplaces and the maze-like raid, to discover underground movements, shady characters, and more secrets about the people around her than she thought possible. Could the killer be the clever journalist or the rebellious palace maid? Perhaps it’s a member of the royal family. With the Fire Kingdom’s people churning for change, a mysterious artifact missing from the museum, and a dastardly plot brewing, Imogen begins to feel the heat. When Horace contacts her and makes her a tempting offer, she struggles to choose between him and her new friends. Imogen’s choice will have enormous consequences over a deadly plot that threatens the people she loves. Will she stop a killer and find a happy ending in the process? Or will an ancient legend come to life and destroy them all?

Imogen’s choice will have enormous consequences over a deadly plot that threatens the people she loves. Will she stop a killer and find a happy ending in the process? Or will an ancient legend come to life and destroy them all?

The wedding day for Hank and Shaday has arrived. The royal bakers travel to the Fire Kingdom with the royal family to get ready for the festivities. Imogen has known for a long time that this day was coming and tried to convince herself and everyone around her that she's okay being the other woman and Hank's marriage is just a formality. Everyone, including herself, knows she's definitely not okay with this arrangement. Unable to control her emotions during formal gatherings or while baking, Imogen has been temporarily removed from her duties.

This is perfect timing as she can now investigate the mysterious death of one of the high profile guests. In her quest to find the guest's murderer, Imogen stumbles upon information about Shaday, comes back into contact with Horace, and learns about the mysterious disappearance of an artifact from the Fire Kingdom's museum. When Horace offers Imogen a different life, away from Hank and the rest of the royal kingdoms, she is tempted to take him up on it and leave her current life behind. Unfortunately, Horace is up to his old tricks and now it's up to Imogen, Hank, Shaday, and her warriors to try and save the day.

I have grown to really love this series. I really enjoyed continuing to get to know everyone better in book 5.

Imogen is a fun, caring, and interesting character. She has embraced the magic she was born into and is still learning how to harness or use the magic. Imogene and Maple are great friends and I love their friendship, even when Maple has to be hard and dismiss her from the royal kitchen during baking time for the wedding. I love the dynamics between Imogene and Prince Harry aka Hank. They are cute together and I really enjoyed how things developed in Full Moons, Dunes, & Macaroons. And Iggy is the best! He's mouthy but Iggy and Imogen have a great relationship and love to watch it continue to grow.

I really enjoyed the fifth book in this cozy mystery series and found the setting and characters to be interesting and exciting. I was completely engaged in the story. There were some twists and turns in the quest to catch the killer. This story dealt with sets of emotions that were never really encountered in previous books. Imogen finally has to acknowledge and accept that her love is marrying another. While it's been alluded to in the other stories, here we are reading the book where the wedding is taking place. The author does a great job conveying her despair.

There are multiple threads woven through Full Moons, Dunes, & Macarons that keep the story fresh and interesting. The book was fast paced and easy to follow. I look forward to the next book and the continued exploration into Imogen's past and development of the relationship between Imogen and Hank. It will also be interesting to see how, or if, the author continues to develop Imogen's relationship with Horace.

I was given a copy of this book to read.

Spells & Caramels, Book 4
Cozy Mystery
Self Published
Paperback: 264 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1983404115
Digital ASIN: B078MNJZFM

About the Book:

Murder in a magical, merry town just brimming with secrets.

On the snowy road to the Earth Kingdom for the holidays, Imogen and the bakers are ambushed by Horace, villainous leader of the Badlands Army. They’re forced to detour to an idyllic, rural village, bedecked in lights, garlands and winter cheer…all a little too perfect to believe. At least that’s so for Imogen, who’s seeing burned out buildings and mysterious memorials that no one else seems to notice.

Hank’s royal presence gets them invited to the big bash at the governor’s mansion. The night is filled with dancing, stolen kisses under the mistletoe and fun, until a guest is found dead in the cauldron of punch.

As bodies and mysteries pile up, all the evidence points to the vampire Francis as the culprit. The gang must come together to clear their friend’s name and save themselves from the angry villagers. Even worse, Imogen struggles with having to keep her relationship with Hank hidden, while working with him to find the real killer.

As Imogen unearths more than a few town secrets, she finally solves the riddles of her past and discovers the truth of Horace’s pursuit of her. But will all the secrets be unraveled in time to stop the killer, or will Imogen and her friends suffer a monstrous fate?

Imogen, Maple, and the rest of the bakers along with Hank, are headed to London to spend the holidays with the Earth Kingdom royalty. During Bruma, the kingdoms' winter holiday, Hank organized a bake-off between the royal bakers for the Water and Earth Kingdoms. The group unfortunately encounters Horace and are forced to abandon their trek to London and into a small town. This almost too perfect town is a lot more than it seems and the perfect facade crumbles before their very eyes into something more sinister.

When some of the townspeople are found dead under mysterious circumstances, Francis seems to be the person of interest in the deaths. Knowing Francis isn't responsible, it's up the royal bakers and Hank to solve the mysteries. As Imogen and Hank, and the rest of the royal bakers investigate, Imogen finally learns more about her family history and some of it is truly shocking - but also explains Horace.

Getting out this small town is not going to be very easy!

I have really taken to this series. Imogene, Hank, Maple, and Sam, along with all the others, are being developed well. The continued world building provides more information about the magic practiced by various characters, describes scenes very well, and helps the reader develop deeper connections with the characters. I really enjoyed getting to know everyone better in book 4.

Imogen is a fun, caring, and interesting character. She has embraced the magic she was born into and is still learning how to harness or use the magic. Imogene and Maple are great friends and I love their friendship. I love the dynamics between Imogene and Prince Harry. They are cute together. And Iggy is the best! He's mouthy but Iggy and Imogen have a great relationship and love to watch it continue to grow.

I really enjoyed the fourth book in this cozy mystery series and found the setting and characters to be interesting and exciting. I was completely engaged in the story. There were some twists and turns in the quest to catch the killer. There are multiple threads woven through Cookie Dough, Snow & Wands Aglow that keep the story fresh and interesting. The book was fast paced and easy to follow. I look forward to the next book and the continued exploration into Imogen's past and development of the relationship between Imogen and Hank - as unconventional as it may seem.

I own this book!
