Deck the Halls with Books Holiday Extravaganza & #Giveaway ~ Mulled Cider Recipe by Barbara Bretton, Author of Annie’s Gift (Rocky Hill Holiday Romance, Book Five) #PNR @BarbaraBretton

I love holidays. I love tradition. I especially love it when you can combine the two at Christmas time. I love piling memory upon memory until the years are nothing but a sweet blur of happy occasions spent with the people you love best in the world.

Every year I attend the candlelight tour of Rockingham, the Kingston NJ (formerly Rocky Hill NJ) house where George Washington bade farewell to his troops after the Revolutionary War ended. The docents are all in period costume. A woman in a mobcap plays the harpsichord near the front room. Upstairs you can actually touch the uniform worn by Washington’s aide de camp. If you close your eyes, I swear you can hear the General’s voice ringing out over the bucolic New Jersey countryside, peaceful now after years of bloody warfare.

The kitchen isn’t part of the main house. It’s a small building off to the side near the smokehouse. The rear wall is all hearth. Guides in long dresses and white aprons hand you mugs of hot cider and offer spicy cookies piled high on earthenware plates. Outside the air is crisp and December cold, but inside the air is warm from the fire and filled with the delicious smells of nutmeg and cinnamon and candle wax.

The following Revolutionary War-era recipe has been adapted for our modern kitchens.

Mulled Cider

Ingredients

1 gallon apple cider
2 sticks cinnamon
1/4 cup dark brown sugar (optional)
6 whole cloves
6 whole allspice
1 sliced lemon

Tie cloves, allspice, and cinnamon sticks in a cheesecloth bag with kitchen string. Combine cider, sugar (if using), and spice bag. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, then simmer for fifteen minutes. Discard cheesecloth spice bag.

Serve cider hot, floating lemon slices on the surface.

Enjoy!

About the Book:

Everyone knows Christmas is a time for family but not for Harry Barnes. If he had his way, he would close his eyes and not open them again until January second when all the fuss was over. Once upon a time he had loved the season but that was a long time ago. His wife Annie and daughter Erin are gone and he hasn’t spoken to his only son, Sam, in years.

The Christmas candlesticks he’d lovingly carved for Annie and their children are buried in the attic under a thick layer of dust along with memories that could break a man’s heart . . . if he still had one left to break.

After years of living on military bases all around the world, Sam Barnes has moved his family back home for keeps but they might as well still be in Japan or England or Timbuktu for all the difference it makes. His father’s heart is still closed to the idea of family and there is nothing Sam can do to change it. Not even if the only thing his twelve-year-old daughter Riley wants for Christmas is the grandfather she has never met.

But then on a snowy Christmas Eve in Rocky Hill, Harry and Sam are visited by a determined mother and daughter who have just a few earth hours to bring their family together or lose them forever.

He heard a sound like autumn leaves crackling underfoot, and then felt a soft rush of cinnamon-scented air as a small form appeared then disappeared right in front of his eyes.
He watched, paralyzed with fear and hope, as she took form one more time, looking less like a hologram and more like a flesh and blood woman. The woman he had loved since he was sixteen years old.
“Annie!” Her name tore from his throat and spilled into the space between them. This was his Annie, before sorrow and sickness had taken their toll.
Bubbles of laughter danced in the air around her. "I did it! How about that, Harry? I did it!"
He reached for her hand but it was like grasping cotton candy. His brain was a bowl of overcooked oatmeal. “I don’t know what’s going on.”
The room began to spin. He could feel himself starting to go under and he put his head between his knees.
“Low blood sugar,” she said, shaking her head. “I don’t miss that at all.”
“It’s not low blood sugar,” he managed, gulping in some air. “I’m talking to a ghost.”
“If you want to put it that way, I guess you are.”
What other way was there to put it? He had buried his beloved wife six months ago and now here she was in their living room acting like nothing had happened.
He took another huge gulp of air then lifted his head.
“I’m still here,” she said, her tone softening. “You can trust your senses.”
“Why?” he asked, his disbelief beginning to show cracks. “How?”
She spread her arms wide. “Look at this place! You’d never know it was Christmas Eve.”
“It doesn’t feel like Christmas Eve.”
“It would if you put some effort into it. Put up a tree. String some lights.” She aimed a sharp look in his direction. “Place the candles in the window where they belong.”
“No.”
Her brows darted into a scowl. “Did you forget your promise?”
“That promise was made a long time ago. Things change.”
“Family doesn’t.”
“I don’t have a family anymore. When I lost you, I lost everything.”
She reached out and for a second he imagined he felt the touch of her hand. But that was crazy, wasn’t it? She was no more real than Santa Claus or Easter Bunny.
“I’m here because I love you,” she said. “And because you need me tonight.”
Tears threatened to overwhelm him. He wanted to believe.
“I need you every night, Annie. That’s never changed.”
“But tonight is the night you asked for me.”
One moment he was standing there next to the refrigerator with a carton of brown eggs in his hand.
The next moment the eggs were on the floor in a yellow and white mess and his Annie was in his arms.
He had lived long enough to know that second chances didn’t happen often in life.
This time he wasn’t going to let her go.

“How did you and Helga meet, anyway?” Tess began walking again. “Or did you grow up together?”
He seemed relieved to speak of lighter things as he joined her. “I met Helga when visiting an allied tribe.” The corner of his mouth inched up. “She was dancing the first time I saw her.”
How ironic. “Do you like dancing then?”
“I did after I met her.” His crooked grin grew a little. “I was very clumsy, but she didn’t seem to mind.”
“Clumsy?” She chuckled. “But you’re a dragon! We’re the epitome of grace.”
“In dragon form,” he agreed. “But I was not so graceful in human form.”
She arched her brows and eyed him. “So you dance well now?”
“I dance…less poorly.”
She chuckled again, detecting a bit of humor lurking beneath all his baggage. “So you saw Helga dancing. Then what?”
“I waited until she was done dancing then approached her.” His gaze went to the trees swaying in the wind. “She continually tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, but the wind kept blowing it across her face as she smiled at me for the first time.” He absently rubbed his fingers together as though he remembered what her hair felt like. “Eventually, I tucked it back for her.”
“Funny the things we remember,” Tess murmured, rubbing her fingers together as well. “I recall the feel of Axle’s leather jacket, the scent of cigar smoke clinging to it. That was my first thought when we finally started chatting. He smoked cigars, and I smoked cigarettes back then…bad combo…mostly cuz I hate the smell of cigars.” She shook her head and spoke without thinking. “I should’ve known then we were a match made in Hell.”
“I don’t smoke anything,” he divulged, wonderfully frank. “But I enjoy drinking.”
“Me too,” she echoed then relented. “Though I might’ve leaned on it a little too heavily lately.” She shrugged a shoulder, not about to apologize. “Or not. Who knows.”
“We all cope with things how we will.” He sounded unapologetic. “I have barely spoken to my kin over the past two years and as you know, shut them out entirely telepathically…until recently.”
“Right,” she said. “Because of me?”
“So it seems,” he conceded. “Yours was the first voice I’ve heard in my head in a long time. Once that happened, it seemed natural to allow my kin back in.”
“Well, I’m glad to hear that,” she said. “And for what it’s worth, I’m sorry I busted into your mind without permission.” She met his eyes, guilty though she had no choice. “I had no control over it.”
“You mean your dragon took over?”
“I assume so,” she replied. “Considering we’re supposedly fated mates, right?”
He nodded and looked at her with hesitation, clearly wondering if he should say what he was thinking.
“What is it, Rokar?” she asked. When he started to shake his head, she urged him on. “You’re the one who said we needed to start somewhere so don’t hold back.”
He hesitated another moment before he relented. “I did not mind.”
“Didn’t mind what?” she prompted when he didn’t go on.
Struggling, he finally said, “You…”
She almost grinned. Was he being bashful? “Me?”
“Yes, you,” he stated bluntly.
She couldn’t help another chuckle as she tried to draw him out. “Me, what, Rokar?”
“You.” He sighed and looked at her like she should know what he was talking about. “I was glad you entered my mind without permission.”
He went to say more but snapped his mouth shut, evidently finished sharing. At least in this regard.
“I’m glad too,” she revealed and meant it. “I like the feel of you within my mind.”
The minute she said it she regretted it mostly because it sounded like she was undermining Helga and she hadn’t meant to do that.
“You do?”
His question caught her off guard. “Of course.”
Had Helga rattled his confidence that badly? While typically she’d find that unattractive in a man, preferring a tough-as-nails sort, she knew deep down Rokar was plenty tough. He was just wounded and vulnerable in a way she understood. So she stopped and told him something a woman should have told him long before her. She gave it to him straight.
In fact, her dragon gave it to him even straighter.
“You sound amazing in a woman’s mind, Rokar,” she said. “Your inner voice is wanna-spread-my-thighs-for-you sexy, and your essence is wrap-around-the soul warm fuzzies, all ‘the feels,’ protective. Not to mention—”
That’s all she got out before he proved he did, in fact, possess a good deal of confidence.
He yanked her close and kissed her hard.

Tagline: What would you do to find your magic?
About the Book:

The most normal thing about Dylan’s morning was being called to the headmaster’s office. And that’s where normal forever changed for him. One minute he’s in the office, the next he’s on the roof, and moments later, he opens the doors to Gray Cliffs Academy to find he’s in a whole new world.

Troll, and pixies, and chameleman, oh my. In a dimension with real-world technology along with magic, Dylan must find his grimoire and get back to Gray Cliffs before the darkness invades both worlds.

Read an Excerpt from Book 5:

When Dylan opened the door, he thought maybe he was dropped off the roof onto his head and suffered a concussion. Nothing else, short of a dream (which he decided it wasn’t a dream when he pinched himself and it hurt like hell), could explain what he saw.

“Quantum physics is real,” he said aloud.

He stepped through the doorway and closed the doors firmly behind him, to keep the fog at bay. Turning around to what should be the foyer of the school, he saw a city. Was it a city? Could that be possible? And it felt familiar, only he was sure he never saw anything like it before now.

“Holy…” He didn’t finish his sentence because awe overtook him. He’d seen this place before. Not the whole place necessarily, but he’d seen that house. He looked to the left...and that house.

His father was an architect, and he had drawings and paintings of Victorian homes all around his office. But the homes were surreal, with blithely assembled gables, dormers, turrets, and finials. It was a surreal whimsy. His dad said he interpreted what he was taught about Stic, Eastlake, and Gothic Revival architecture. He always thought his dad reimagined and reinvented original architectural designs, but he drew real houses.

Dylan took a tentative step forward. What the hell happened? Where were the rest of the kids? And why wasn’t he terrified? Fog seeped through the seams of the door and clouded the vision before him. He could see this town was near the sea and thought maybe it was the other side of the island—or not.

He considered pinching himself again, because this had to be a dream. Only he looked down and saw the welt he gave himself moments ago. Not a smart idea. He’d roll with it. He stepped forward onto the sidewalk and was nearly run over by an egg-shaped man wearing what he’d call steampunk clothing: cream colored, high-waist Regency fall front trousers, a brown vest with a burgundy jacket with little round tassels hanging from the hem, a white cotton neck scarf with the same tassels, and tan and burgundy wingtip shoes.

The egg man walked on the tips of his toes while three cats, all tiger striped, walked with him. The three cats were on leashes. With his nose in the air, not paying attention, it was no wonder he nearly ran over Dylan.

Dylan started to say a sarcastic, “Excuse me,” but he was awestruck by what he saw in the street.

An elephant, wearing a hat and blanket the same colors of tan and burgundy as the round man, had a miniature version of the Taj Mahal strapped to his back. As the elephant walked past, Dylan could see two monkeys inside the Taj Mahal, playing chess.

Dylan shook his head. What happened on that roof? He looked around to see the streets were filled with other oddities: a woman who looked like a mermaid with legs, was riding a seahorse as if the air were water; a frog with wings; fish floating by in bubbles. And when he looked to the sky, he swore the crescent moon smiled at him, then winked.

He felt something hot in the pocket of his khaki school uniform pants and pulled out a pin. It glowed. It was warm, but not really hot, though it felt quite hot in his pocket, like it tried to get his attention.

“Hey,” he heard a muffled cry.

Looking around, he didn’t see anyone looking at him.

“Down here, stupid,” the whiny voice said again.

Just as he leaned over to see where the voice was coming from, a bee the size of a small dog swooped down at him. As it flew away, he saw it wasn’t just a bee. The insect had the upper body of a woman, with the butt and wings of a bee.

“Watch out, that one can kill you,” the voice said.

Dylan looked at the grass next to the sidewalk. A man’s pocket watch was wedged between the grass and the white picket fence. He bent down and picked up the watch.

“Whoa,” he said when he almost dropped it, after looking into the clear glass cover.

Instead of seeing the face of a watch through the glass, Dylan saw a man’s face, and his bare arms and legs. It looked as if he’d been stuffed into the pocket watch.

“Hey, be careful,” the naked old man inside the pocket watch said.

“Sorry,” Dylan responded without thinking.

“Press the top and open this thing. I’m getting cramps.”

Dylan didn’t immediately open the pocket watch. He turned it over in his hand to look at the back. It looked like tarnished sterling silver, and it was old. But where were the watch parts? He’d have to open the glass watch face to see what was inside. How did that old man fit inside? And the man inside was talking to him. How had he heard such a small man, who was closed inside a watch?

Dylan could see the man’s face peaking from between his knees, which looked smashed against the glass. His legs were bent, and his knees were on either side of his body, with his ankles crossed. His toes were large and gross. He only had three fingers and a thumb on each hand. Dylan could see a cog embedded in the left side of his chest. He had a long, narrow face with a prominent chin, a wide nose, smallish eyes that were hard to see behind his goggle-like glasses, and no hair.

“You gonna stare all day, or are you gonna let me out?” he said, then yelled, “Let me out!”

Dylan’s fingers moved to the top of the watch and popped the cover open. It felt as if his fingers were moving of their own freewill, even though he tried to keep them from letting the little old man out. Something told him this old guy was trouble. T. R. O. U. B. L. E.

The man tumbled out and dropped to the grass. “Umph.”

Dylan blinked and when he opened his eyes, the old man was no longer small enough to fit into the watch. Dylan covered his eyes. “Dude, you’re naked. Your junk is hanging out for everyone to see.”

When he opened his eyes, the old guy had his hands over his crotch. “Sorry, I’m getting old. Things don’t always go the way I plan them.”

The old man did something Dylan didn’t see, and suddenly he was dressed in the same manner as the round man with the cats.

“Who are you? And where am I?” Dylan asked, now that he could comfortably look at the man.

“I’m Henry Gidiro, but my friends call me Hank.” He swept his hand across and in front of him, bowing deeply from his waist. When he stood again, he said, “And you’re the young and stupid Dylan Streetman.”

Dylan’s chin dropped, his mouth wide open. Just then, another bee swooped down at his mouth.

Henry moved faster than a comic character, closing Dylan’s mouth with one hand and swinging his other hand in the air to ward off the bee. “Nasty things.”

“How do you know my name, Hank?” Dylan mumbled through his closed mouth, because Henry’s hand was still on his chin.

“It’s Henry to you, and I’ve been expecting you. You’re uglier than I expected,” he retorted, pulling his hand away.
