My Review:

The Copper Scroll is a wonderful book that kept me on the edge of my seat. I was completely invested in Joshua "Masa" Bennett's need to find the Copper Scroll. The author created a character whose personality, excitement, and fear radiated off the pages.

This story comes complete with the bad guys who want nothing more than to either keep Masa away or steal anything that he finds. A game of cat and mouse keeps Masa and his team on their toes. The landscape covered in The Copper Scroll is nothing less than breathtaking. I loved watching them move from place to place as they searched.

I was pulled into The Copper Scroll by the synopsis but the author's writing style, character development, and mystery kept me engaged. I loved the mix of history, secrecy, the ties to faith, and archaeology that fill the pages. The past, ancient historical prophecy, secrets, and mystery blend perfectly with the modern world and new discoveries, as the team deciphers ancient text in a world that is now so different.

I was provided a paperback copy of this book and will be proud to display The Copper Scroll on my bookshelf.

Joshua “Masa” Bennett hummed the Villines Trio’s familiar refrain, “I’m going all the way, I made up my mind…” as he drove toward the University of Arkansas. The song, a staple from his Lincoln church, bookended his commute, its quiet grace a lifeline since his Army days tromping biblical lands. No atheists in foxholes, they say, and Masa carried that faith into civilian life, fueling his master’s in archaeology. Today felt routine, just another class, but a spark flickered beneath it, a path to mysteries buried for centuries, secrets that could shake faith’s foundations. The lecture hall buzzed with late-afternoon chaos. High ceilings arched overhead, intricate moldings catching golden light through tall, narrow windows. Dust motes danced in the beams, stirred by restless students shifting in tiered rows of scarred desks with etched initials, coffee rings, and doodles of bored minds. Chalk dust bit the air, mingling with the musty scent of old books and the hum of flickering fluorescents. At the front, Professor Thaddeus Luke commanded the room, his wiry frame dwarfed by a blackboard scrawled with frantic chalk lines and gray hair flaring like a storm cloud as his voice boomed with passion. 

Joshua sat near the back, his lean frame hunched over a desk that creaked under his weight. His leather backpack, a frayed relic from his grandfather’s desert-wandering days, slumped against his leg like a loyal dog. Dark hair fell into his eyes as he scribbled furiously in a notebook already thick with ink: sketches of jagged cave mouths, snatches of Hebrew script, arrows darting between wild theories. Around him, classmates slumped in their seats, some doodling aimlessly, others sneaking glances at their phones beneath the desks. A girl two rows ahead twisted a strand of blonde hair around her finger, whispering to her neighbor with a smirk. Joshua barely noticed. His world was the blackboard, the professor’s words, the tantalizing riddle unfolding before him.

My Review:

The Arrangement is the first book in the Bancroft University Chronicles duet. We follow Emilia as she's used as a pawn in political warfare. The daughter of the US Vice President, she's always on stage, doing what she's told. Then, a marriage is arranged between Emilia and her teenage crush who abandoned her. 

This book is amazing. The chemistry between Emelia and Nikolai is explosive. The secrecy, the lies, and the corruption threaten everything Emilia has ever held dear and always believed. I was on the edge of my seat watching everything play out in The Arrangement. I can't wait for the second part of this story.

My phone buzzes in my shorts pocket. I ignore it, thinking it’s a text, but then it buzzes again. I look down and see my father’s name lighting up the screen. Groaning, I answer. 

“Emilia.” His voice is calm, clipped. Not cold, just clean, like everything else he controls. He says my name like punctuation. 

“Yes, sir.” 

“Your mother asked me to check on the brunch.” 

She didn’t want to ask herself. She never does. She strategically delegates through him, like always. “It’s done,” I say. “Final headcount is confirmed. Catering’s squared. My remarks are short and already vetted.” There’s a pause, the sound of him moving paper in the background, or maybe pouring a drink. I can’t tell. He’s always multitasking, even when he speaks like everything is a priority. 

“She wants it to go smoothly.” 

It will. He knows that. He wouldn’t have called if he didn’t already trust it was handled. 

“There’s something else,” my father says right as I think we’re done, his voice flat and clipped in the way he reserves for things that aren’t up for discussion. “I’ve arranged a meeting with Nikolai and his father next week at the Four Seasons. I’d like you to be there. We have some important things to discuss.”

My Review:

A Quarterback for Christmas is a delightful sports romance filled with magic. The story is filled with misunderstandings, longing, and hopefulness. I love the second chance romance trope and this story delivers. I really loved Sir Wolfgang. He has his own sections at the end of some of the chapters and love his POV. As a Michigander, it was exciting to "watch" the Superbowl in this story. I may not be a sports fan but I still love it when my state is represented.

This is a heartwarming tale that kept me entertained from the very beginning.

The rain had just started when Nash Jordan stepped off the practice field, helmet in hand and sweat soaking through his gray workout shirt. His leg ached every time he shifted his weight, a dull reminder of the ACL tear that still hadn’t fully healed. He told himself it was nothing—it had to be nothing—but the tightness in his jaw said otherwise.

“Jordan,” one of the junior trainers called. “Coach wants to see you.”

Nash nodded and headed down the long hallway toward the coach’s office. The walls were lined with framed photos of better days—division titles, playoff wins, smiling faces. For a split second, he imagined one of those photos showing him, wearing the Rams jersey with a championship ring on his finger.

The coach was waiting behind his desk, arms folded and expression unreadable. “How’s the leg?”

My Review:

Knot of Souls is a complex and intricate novel. Joy is murdered but finds herself still living and breathing. The only problem is the other inhabitant in her body. Shade, a fae prince, hopped into a dying body only to find it still occupied. On the run for a murder he didn't commit, Shade sought safety in the first body he could to hide those hunting him. Now this duo of opposites must figure out who wanted Joy dead, who is framing Shade and why, how they are able to be in the same body, and how to share.

Joy has a lot of emotional baggage, low self-esteem, and allows people to control her. She's a people-please and everyone either takes advantage of that or doesn't acknowledge her at all. As she's fighting for control of her body, Joy finds herself becoming more assertive. Shade has a hard time giving up control, especially knowing that the more they work together the more they become intertwined. I loved watching him soften and become more accepting of Joy.

The author did an excellent job writing the entire novel. The dialogue was fluid and smooth and all of the characters were likable in their own way. There was back story and history given in the right increments; not too much, not too little. The story is filled with twists and turns. There are misdirects as the reader tries to figure who killed Joy, who set up Shade, and why to both.

Joy's character is likable - she doesn't start out strong but she evolves in this book and becomes both strong and competent. Shade starts out being dominant, fight to keep control of his host body. He's full of secrets and is tightlipped with the knowledge that Joy needs in order to attempt to understand what is going on with everything. He eventually stops fighting and changes his perspective. The author has written characters that have deep layers and are emotional. 

I absolutely could not put this book down!!!

Joy

The first thing I realized, after I died, was that my body could walk and talk and no longer needed my help for any of it. I was in there, able to look through my eyes and hear through my ears, but even the simple task of aiming my gaze had slipped outside my control. I was a passenger inside my own mind, an observer along for the ride.

Kristen had been right, I thought numbly as I struggled to make sense of my new reality. Had it only been lunchtime today when she’d told me I’d never get ahead if I didn’t learn to assert myself? “Take control of your life,” she’d said, “or others will take it for you.”

She couldn’t have been thinking of anything quite so literal. Whatever was happening to me, it wasn’t because I’d failed to advocate for a promotion at work or refused to ask out a coworker.

Right?

My body reached my car and slid behind the wheel. A rattled thought—not my own—cursed as it tried to understand how the contraption worked. How much can cars have changed in only a century? Visions accompanied the thoughts, memories—again not my own—of a classic car, gleaming black and elegant, its top down, my bobbed hair whipping around my face as I laughed with glee, a white-faced young man at my side gripping the door, begging me to slow down. I did not.

Which brings me to the second thing I realized, after I died: I was no longer alone inside my own mind.

Whoever was in there didn’t seem to have noticed me yet. Fine. I slid into the smallest corner of my brain I could find, ignoring the intruder as they struggled to figure out how to work an automatic transmission. Maybe they’d get frustrated and give up and go find someone else’s body to possess.

Holy shit! I’ve been possessed by the ghost of someone who died in like 1930.

But why?

I tried to remember what had happened, but the images danced just out of reach. I recalled that the night had been unseasonably cold for October, the chill biting through my inadequate jacket as I hurried to my car, parked in a garage two blocks away from the shelter where I’d been volunteering. Hugging my arms around my torso for warmth, I took a shortcut through an alley and …

There was a noise. I’d startled, my heart pounding in my throat, already on edge because of the argument.

Wait. Back up. There’d been an argument. That seemed significant, but my scattered thoughts couldn’t piece it together as yet, not when a bodily intruder fumbled at the gearshift of my two-month-old Hyundai Accent with only fifty-eight “low monthly payments” left to go.

Low is such a relative word.

My Review:

To Murder a Marquis is a fantastic book. I loved every single bit of Jane Carstairs' adventures back to 1815. I was swept up in Jane's travel from 2015 back to 1815. Awakening in the same location but in a different century, Jane assumes the role of Amelia, her long distant relative to find the marquis lays dying in the road. It is up to Jane to figure out who wants him dead. 

This mystery pulled me in and kept me engaged. The "accidents" Robert is involved in are daring and too plentiful to be anything but assassination attempts. To keep her time period intact, Jane knows what she needs to do. Keeping Robert safe is action one. Finding out who wants him dead is action two. Not falling in love with a man who is destined to marry Jane's descendant is action three. All three actions are harder to accomplish than she thought.

I run in phases with historical fiction. I have to really be in the mood for regency stories. If I'm not, then the way women were regarded back then really affects my mood and how I perceive a story. I found The Murder a Marquis to be delightful, entertaining, and easy to fall in love with. The setting is vivid and descriptive. The characters so well-written. The plot fleshed out quite nicely. I really felt like I was transported into the book.

All lovers of historical fiction should read To Murder a Marquis.

Furious barking woke me from a very nice dream in which my ex-fiancé Allan Hunter was on his knees, begging me to stay, and I had just flung his ring back in his face in a most satisfying manner. The fact he’d dumped me for a full-breasted bistro waitress called Tawnee—that’s right, with a double “e”—who clearly said all the right adoring things, had the intelligence of a single-celled organism, and was a tigress in the bedroom was something I chose to ignore.

The dog wouldn’t stop barking. I opened my eyes, and there he was, a beautiful russet-coloured retriever, barking like mad, but with his tail wagging. Still slightly dazed, I shook my head. What the hell was I doing lying under a tree? I was supposed to be in the library at Chelston Hall, helping Dad, who was in hospital in London with bronchitis, collate the archives of the Hadley family. I could almost hear him say, “Jane Carstairs, what on earth are you doing there when you should be working?”

The dog was still barking. I’m not afraid of dogs so I raised myself on one elbow. “Here, boy. What’s the matter?”

I held out one hand for him to come over and have a sniff as an introduction. The dog took a few steps forward, then ran back to his original spot, and barked once. Clearly, a clever canine. He was telling me something. But what? I struggled to sit up. For some reason, my clothes were constricting; something like a straitjacket encircled my chest. Instead of my casual T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, I wore an ankle-length flowing dress, and short lace-up boots, along with a tight, short, long-sleeved jacket. I was in period costume straight out of Pride and Prejudice. Not funny! Someone had obviously pranked me but managing to undress and get me into this suffocating costume was beyond a joke. Plus, how did I get from sitting in a chair in the library to lying under a tree? 

Back to the dog again, which now seemed very agitated. He ran back and forth a bit and whined. By pulling my dress and copious amounts of petticoat up to my knees, tearing something at the jacket shoulder in the process, I managed to stand. The dog ran off through the trees as if on a mission. Maybe someone was hurt, and the mutt was looking for help? Dogs can be so clever that way. Running in the narrow skirt was impossible so I hitched the skirt as high as I could and chased after the dog. Ten minutes later I arrived, panting, at the scene of a bloody accident. Bloody is no exaggeration. A man, also dressed in period costume—riding gear—lay on his back, his arms flung out. He was either asleep, or unconscious, or ... I didn’t even want to consider the last option. The dog stood next to him, its tail wagging. It looked at me, whining as if to say, “Help him.” I knelt and took a closer look. Robert William Edward Hadley, the Marquis of Coleston, lay before me. An arrow protruded from the top of his left shoulder, a massive amount of blood soaked the front of his fawn-coloured coat, and he looked very dead.
