Read an Excerpt:

My parents are dead. I can be free if I go with him. Even if it means being bound to him until death. Alma will be safe. She is brave, selfless, and I know she will take care of the kingdom. This was a chance for me to get away from here. I won’t give him the satisfaction of kissing me. I will learn who that shadow man was and why he killed my parents.

A sacred bond that can only be enacted by using blood magic. That confirmed the suspicion that magic had come back to the realm and our goddess will be reborn again. There was a lot I didn’t know about this oath, but what I knew was that once I agree to it, I won’t be able to lie to him, kill him, or betray our original vow. That was the full extent of my knowledge of this oath, but he didn’t know that.

“Blood oath,” I spat.

“This will hurt, which is why I preferred the kiss.” He held out his right hand and then ran his blade across his palm, then across my right. I didn’t wince, and I saw the flicker of amusement on his face. I have withstood far worse pain in much more sensitive places on my body.

“Intriguing,” he said.

“Chloe, you don’t have to do this,” Alma pleaded, reaching for my left hand.

“It’ll be all right,” I told her. I am not a ruler or leader. Mother burned any chance of that out of me the day she made the first cut. But Alma, she is. That is why my next order can be said so easily.

“Once we leave, you will assume the throne. Cancel the ball and inform the other kingdoms that the entire royal family is dead because of an unforeseen accident. This man will let me make an official document having you take the throne because of my death. This is an order and not a request.” Snagging my left arm, she turned me toward her.

“Don’t do this,” Alma begged. I jerked my arm from her grip, handed her the dagger, and then turned back toward the man.

“Get on with it.”

“As you wish.” We joined our cut palms, blood mixing, and then he pulled me into him.

One hand gripped my waist, and I felt the hardness of his body against me.

“Do we have to be this close?” I asked. Completely ignoring me, he began the oath, and my mouth filled with the flavor of magic as our joined palms burned.

“Under the rights of the Blood Oath, I swear we will leave your people unharmed if you come with me willingly and without complication. If you break this oath, your people will pay with their lives. Do you swear by it?”

Our gaze didn’t falter. “Under the rights of the Blood Oath, I swear to come with you willingly and without complications, and you will leave my people unharmed. If you break this oath, you and your people will pay with their lives.” It came out a lot easier than I thought it would.

“Sheathe your swords,” he ordered his men, our eyes still locked onto each other.

“Lower your weapons,” I ordered. “Leave these quarters and don’t follow us. Don’t come after me, if any of you disobey me, you will be executed.”

“Chloe.” Alma sounded defeated, and it broke my heart.

“Draw up a parchment willing the kingdom over to her and then stamp it with the royal seal,” I ordered the man.

“You heard her.” The entire time, our bloodied hands, bodies, and eyes never faltered from their positions. I knew he was trying to intimidate me into submission, but I have been through worse with Mother. Alma and the guards left the chambers. The man stepped back from me, our embrace broken, but not our eye contact. One of his men brought over the parchment. He examined the message, and then went over to my stationary and sealed it with the royal crest that belonged to me.

“Bring that to the one called Alma. We need to get going.” He then approached me. “You are a very brave woman.” He snapped his fingers and one of his men brought over some rope.

“Is that necessary? I just swore to you I wouldn’t escape.”

“I don’t want you getting any wicked ideas about stabbing me, Princess.”

She put the flowers on the coffee table and moved her hand toward the sofa. He sat, and she did too. “Didn’t you have something you want to talk to me about?”
Momentarily, he couldn’t remember what it was.

“Did you forget?” She gave him an encouraging smile. “So much has happened. It seems like ages ago.”

Then it came rushing back to him—Dr. Sims—the things he remembered and the yearbook pictures. He sat with his hands clasped and his head down, thinking. Was now the time to tell her? He jerked his head up. “I’m not sure this is a good time to tell you what I know.”

She frowned. “That sounds serious.”

“It is and a bit weird too.”

She leaned forward and clasped her hands together. “Why don’t you tell me, and I’ll decide how serious it is.”

HB shifted on the couch, trying to find a comfortable position. Finding none, he straightened and looked at her. “You know I felt like a different person when I came out of my coma?”

Alison nodded but remained quiet.

“And I wrote about the rescue at Cedar Springs?”

She remained stock still.

“I started adding one plus one, and I came up with something bizarre out there.”

Clearing her throat, Alison finally said, “You’re scaring me.”

He noisily let out his breath. “I’ve been seeing a counselor, and he told me about one of his patients, Ashton.” HB paused and rearranged his thoughts. “I talked to Ashton, who told me he had tried to kill himself but failed.”

“Oh, no!” Alison cried. “Please don’t tell me you want to kill yourself!” She leaned forward and tried to grasp his hand.

“No, I want to live again!” He let her touch his fingers before pulling back. Although contemplating suicide might be easier than telling Alison he was her dead husband—Robert.

“Anyway,” HB swallowed, “Ashton told me about soul walk-ins.”

“What did you say?” Alison asked, alarm creasing her brow. “Wait!” She jumped up and hurried down the hallway while he waited. He moved his forefinger over his thumb, wondering what would make her leave like that.

She returned with a small book, sat, and clutched it to her chest as if protecting it. Then, slowly, she eased the book onto her lap and opened it.

He murmured the title. “Communicating with the Dead… So you believe in that?”

“I don’t know what I believe. But this book mentions walk-in souls and—”

“I think I have Robert’s soul in my body,” he exclaimed before he could change his mind.

HB didn’t mean to interrupt her, but it just happened. He couldn’t help it. He watched as

Alison’s eyes rolled back, and she slumped over.

“Alison?” He patted her hand and then her cheeks until her eyes fluttered open.
“How…” She looked confused. “Why? What?” She fell back on the couch. “I don’t believe it,” she said with a shake of her head, and her features turned stony. “I think you should leave.”
“What?” HB cried. “No! No. I’m sorry!” Tears immediately filled his eyes. “I knew it was a bad time.”
“What a cruel and mean joke to play on me after what I’ve gone through!” Her eyes flashed with anger, something he couldn’t pinpoint.
“I’ll let myself out.” He jumped up. He’d blown it with Alison, and she didn’t want to believe him. And he might not have a chance to convince her.

Read an Excerpt:

“You look perfect. I mean perfectly healthy. I mean mostly uninjured,” she stammers. She places her tiny hand over her eyes.

Feeling braver than ever, I walk right up to her. I gently remove the hand from her face and hold it to my own. “See, I’m fine,” I whisper as I gently rub my thumb over her tiny knuckles.

Her eyes lift to mine and lock our gazes. I have always found the golden color of her eyes fascinating but never studied them up close. They are light brown with a golden star in the middle. I am literally star gazing as she takes in the injuries to my face. We stand there for about a minute, lost in time.

I wonder if she is thinking about when we first started dating, the hard times that followed, the present, or the future. I search her face for clues but don’t want to break the spell by opening my mouth. I decide to put said mouth to better use by lowering my head toward hers.

Haunted #Halloween Spooktacular & #Giveaway ~ Do you have a fear of Halloween? by Tena Stetler, Author of A Magic Redemption (A Demon’s Witch Series, Book Five) ~ Paranormal Romance #PNR ~

Do you have a fear of Halloween?

Then you suffer from Samhainopobia.

I don't fit in that category! Do you?

Today Halloween is attracting adults in a masquerade type atmosphere, much like Mardi Gras. Their costumed antics mock, challenge and tease the mysterious, possible malevolent forces of the night. The otherworld becomes our world on this night of enchanted possibilities and transcendence. Are we reaffirming death as a part of life in an exhilarating celebration of magic for an evening? Or like me, just enjoying the air of celebration on a night the veil between the living and dead is purported to be the thinnest. Every year with the help of my hubby, I decorate our house to the hilt on the first day of October and revel in Halloween décor the entire month.

Did you know Jack-O-Lanterns originated in Ireland? People placed lit candles inside hollowed out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain (pronounced Sah-ween) holiday. Boy, did we do a role reversal on that aspect of Halloween. Instead of chasing the spirits away, we tend to invite them in.

Most present day Halloween traditions are traceable to the ancient Celtic day of the dead. Halloween consists of mysterious customs, but each has a history, or at least a story behind it. Take wearing costumes, and roaming from door to door demanding treats. This behavior can be traced to the Celtic period and the first few centuries of the Christian era, when it was thought that the souls of the dead were out and about, along with fairies, witches, and demons. Offerings of food and drink were left out to placate them. As the centuries wore on, people began dressing like these creatures, performing antics in exchange for food and drink. This is where the practice of trick-or-treating began. To this day, vampires, witches, ghosts, and skeletons are among the favorite costumes.

Our Halloween also retains activities from the original harvest holiday of Samhain, such as bobbing for apples and carving vegetables, (pumpkins) as well as the fruits, nuts, and spices for cider associated with the day. Although at my house, hot chocolate is pretty popular, since Halloween almost guarantees the first snow of the year.

Well, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to don my vampire costume, custom fitted fangs and pull up a stool in the shadows of my front door, candy bowl on a stand beside me. I sneakily turn on the fog machine and out of the mist greet the little trick or treaters or scare the bejeebers out of the older ones with bats hanging over head and screeching on my command. Won’t you join me? Happy Halloween!

Excerpt:

The road to her cottage took them by the pub. He didn’t want to spoil a great day by stopping by Shaughnessy’s. But he had a nagging feeling that was exactly what he was supposed to do. Prior experience taught him nothing but trouble would come if he ignored his gut. “Mind if we stop by the pub on the way home. Storm can stay in the truck for a few minutes. I want to make sure—”
“Everything is all right?”
“Of course it’s all right. I’ve taken time off before.” Gavin bristled. “I had a life before—” He stopped mid-sentence. No way was he going to spoil this day.
She shifted in her seat to face him. “Before what? Me? Before your sister married an assassin? Or Brandy became engaged to a vampire? Before your world came crashing down amid demons, vampires, witches, and world ending shit?” She paused, closed her eyes, and leaned her head against the seat again. “I didn’t mean that. I’ve been on edge since the dream—nightmare—premonition. Call it what you want. Today was a nice reprieve. But when we hit the edge of town—what’d you call ’em—” she tapped her temple. “My spidey senses went off.” She shivered.

Of Cats, Princesses, and Dimwitted Seagulls by Rena Leith, Author of Coastal Corpse (A Cass Peake Cozy Mystery, Book 2) ~ #CozyMystery @renaleith #Giveaway

In memory of Barbara "Babs" Hightower.

Please welcome Rena Leith to the blog today:

Of Cats, Princesses, and Dimwitted Seagulls

What is it about cats? They look as though they’re sound asleep, but when you tiptoe by them, one eye opens and watches you. Not two eyes, just one. Great small muscle control. Nothing else moves, yet somehow you feel guilty for disturbing them.

Cats have been worshipped throughout the generations. Mine think they still should be. I live with two Maine Coons: Sierra and Ginger Snap. Their names suit them. Sierra is a bit of a mountain at 24 pounds, and Ginger Snap is orange and has a tendency to nip. Oh, she doesn’t mean anything by it; it’s an expression of her love. A bit sadomasochistic if you ask me, but hey, she’s a cat.

I love cats of all sizes, shapes, and breeds, but Coon Cats are really something special. I used to live in a town house with two flights of stairs. After my arthroscopic surgery, getting up and down the stairs on crutches was a real bear. Jeri, a brown tabby, would pace me, going step by step up the stairs, vocalizing as we went as if giving me encouragement.

Before I got my first Maine Coon, I had a long-haired, black half-Persian/half-alley cat. Klaus was cantankerous and loving all at once. He adored my son and followed him around like a dog. The cat in my Murder Beach mysteries is based on a combination of Sierra and Klaus. Like Klaus, Thor belonged first to a male and then to a female, has long black fur, and is obstreperous. Like Sierra, Thor is huge, loves tuna juice, and lies around on his back, feet in the air. Thor is a character in the novels like any of the humans. He’s very real to me. Thor the cat in combination with Doris the ghost becomes Thoris, an homage to Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars. As a child, I was addicted to the Burne Hogarth Tarzan comic strip in the Sunday newspaper. Later, I read all the Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan books, then his standalones like The Mad King, and finally his Mars books.

Just as characteristics of people I know become the foundations of characters in my novels, so, too, do the animals that appear. So far, Thor is the main animal characters in the Murder Beach series; however, I have made mention of another cat in the vicinity, local birds, and other small creatures, such as squirrels. When my son was young, a backyard squirrel became quite friendly. We named him Nutty. Who knows? Maybe one of Nutty’s relatives was one of the small creatures Doris used to inhabit before Thor came to live in Doris’ old house with Cass and provide Doris with a more intelligent body to inhabit. Intelligence in an animal is important to Doris’ ability to get back to the bungalow. I mention a rather dim seagull in Coastal Corpse because Doris had difficulty diverting him from fishing long enough to get back to the house!

Twinkle Bright – Elves Secret Santa - Fantasy Fudge Recipe by Tena Stetler, Author of A Magic Redemption A Demon’s Witch Series, Book Five ~ #Giveaway #PNR

Twinkle Bright – Elves Secret Santa

Direct from the North Pole, welcome to the Elves Secret Santa party! Here at the North Pole it's extremely busy, but we still have time for a little holiday fun and shenanigans.

Let me introduce myself.  I'm an elf and my name is Twinkle Bright because my elf hat has twinkle lights wound all around the scalloped edge and the pointy top.

I make yummy Hot Chocolate for Santa and the elves from a secret family recipe passed down from generation to generation. My hot chocolate keeps everyone warm and toasty inside at the North Pole. There is even an automatic dispenser in Santa's Sleigh providing him with hot chocolate during his travels on Christmas Eve.  It goes good with the cookies the children leave for him.

While I am mixing up large batches of hot chocolate, I listen to Christmas Carols from a variety of pop, country and rock artists. I always taste each batch to insure it’s up to elf standards. .  You would think I'd get tired of hot chocolate, but no -- never.  I love the steaming chocolaty drink.  I usually keep mine in an insulated mug so it stays warm while sampling the cookies in the elves' bakery.  Frosted sugar cookies and gingerbread cookies are my absolute favorites.
Now, I'm going to let you in on a little secret.  But you must promise not to tell...anyone.

We do a secret Santa gift exchange around here and this year I got Bob, her job at the North Pole is name checker to make sure Santa has all the correct spellings of the girls and boys. One year she spelled Chrys' name Chris and wow what an uproar.

Luckily Santa caught it, but we had to rush to change all the tags on her packages.

Whew!

I'm getting Elf Bobi a package of 120 different color markers in a jewel encrusted case for marking off the correctly spelled names after she checks them.

Do you think she'll like that?

Do you like fudge?  Great, I'll share with you my favorite Fantasy Fudge Recipe.

3 cups of sugar

3/4 cup butter

1 -  5 oz can of evaporated milk (do not use sweetened condensed milk)

1 – 12 oz package semi sweet chocolate chips

1 - 7 oz jar marshmallow cream

1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract

You may add chopped nuts if you wish

Bring sugar, butter and evaporated milk to a full rolling boil in a large saucepan over medium heat, stir constantly

Cook for four minutes or until a candy thermometer reaches 234 degrees.

High altitude takes about 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and add chocolate chips and marshmallow cream, stir until melted.

Add vanilla and nuts. Stir until blended.

Pour into a greased 9x13 pan, spread evenly.

Cool completely and cut into squares.

Even with magic, finding your place in the world proves more difficult than imagined especially when someone is out for revenge.

Synn, a demon, carries extraordinary magic and power, but there is more within her than she dreams. Kidnapped as a child, her captors murdered her family and forced her into training as a warrior assassin.

When an assignment goes horribly wrong, she finds herself at the mercy of the friends and family of her intended target. Offering valuable information in exchange for protection, she gains her freedom, but it is not without its challenges.

Gavin Shaughnessy is the publican at his family’s Irish pub. He is certain Synn is meant to be his and isn’t bothered by her past. He must find a way to convince her their future together is stronger than the dark memories that haunt her dreams.
When her past comes calling for revenge, will their love survive the raging inferno she brings down upon them? Or will the searing path of destruction destroy all they hold dear.

Time seemed to go on forever as she slowed and walked backward for a while, her foot steps in the sand filling with water as she traveled along the shoreline, as if nature erased her intrusion. She turned around and continued her trek. Unaware of how long or how far she'd walked, the sudden outline of a figure, cloaked in the fog, jogging toward her caused panic to set in. Her heart pounded rapidly in her chest, she swallowed hard, adrenalin pumping through her veins as flight or fight response kicked in. Digging her good foot into the sand she prepared to attempt a sprint…to where. Where the hell am I? A quick glance around, she spied a light from a familiar building far off on the bluffs as the figure burst from the fog. A tall, wide-shouldered male with long muscular legs came closer. She froze.

Once lithe, strong and agile in her former life, a boss’s retaliation had taken a toll on her body. Now tired her gait was uneven and unsteady, even a slow sprint would likely end with her face planted in the sand.

About the Author:

Tena Stetler is a best-selling author of award winning paranormal romance. She has an over-active imagination, which led to writing her first vampire romance as a tween to the chagrin of her mother and delight of her friends. After many years as a paralegal, then an IT Manager, she decided to live out her dream of pursuing a publishing career.

With the Rocky Mountains outside her window, she sits at her computer surrounded by a wide array of witches, shapeshifters, demons, faeries, and gryphons, with a Navy SEAL or two mixed in telling their tales. Her books tell stories of magical kick-ass women and mystical alpha males that dare to love them. Well, okay there are a few companion animals to round out the tales.

Colorado is home; shared with her husband of many moons, a brilliant Chow Chow, a spoiled parrot and a forty-five-year-old box turtle. When she’s not writing, her time is spent kayaking, camping, hiking, biking  or just relaxing in the great Colorado outdoors. During the winter you can find her curled up in front of a crackling fire with a good book, a mug of hot chocolate and a big bowl of popcorn.
