#BookReview ~ Fury by Heather Atkinson ~ @rararesources @BoldwoodBooks #Gangland #CrimeDrame #Action

Fury

They’re feared in the streets and fury runs in their veins.

The MacGregors don’t back down from a fight—and they never forget a grudge. Known across Glasgow as The Bloody MacGregors, the family built their empire with bare fists and broken rules.

Virgil MacGregor walked away from it all. He wanted peace. A quiet life. No more blood on his hands. But trouble doesn’t care what he wants - and neither do his family.

Now his brothers are working for Toni McVay, the ruthless Queen of Glasgow, and chaos is spilling onto Virgil’s doorstep. Dragged back into the game, he’ll have to fight harder than ever to keep control—of the streets, his brothers, and his fiery estranged wife, Ember, who has unfinished business and a score to settle.

With enemies circling and old wounds reopening, the temperature is rising and the MacGregors are about to face their biggest battle yet.

This time, it’s not just about power—it’s about survival...

My Review:

Fury had me on the edge of my seat from the second Virgil's family showed up unexpectedly to his new sanctuary. He left their empire for a quiet life in a caravan, no longer wishing to be part of anything violent, but it seems his family is unaccepting of this change. Virgil's brothers have gotten in over their heads, and his grandmother, mother, and estranged wife need him to come home and reign them back in and away from trouble. As such, Virgil slowly gets sucked back into the life he wanted so desperately to leave behind.

Fury is a dark and violent crime drama. I was pulled in and kept engaged through the entire story. The grittiness of this gangland novel is not for the faint of heart. The author crafted Virgil's story with precision and terrific writing. Each scene leaves you craving more so be prepared to not want to put this book down until you read the last word. You'll be on the edge of your seat, wondering what the author has coming at you next.

This is my first experience with Heather Atkinson's books, and it won't be my last.

I was provided with a copy of this book. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Happy Release Day ~ While the Getting is Good by Matt Riordan ~ @MattMRiordan #CrimeDrama

While the Getting is Good

by Matt Riordan

About the Book:

Amid the gangland wars of Prohibition, one fisherman’s long-shot play to secure his family’s future brings disaster to everyone he loves.

Based partly on family lore, Matt Riordan’s follow-up to The North Line is for readers of Jeannette Wall’s Hang the Moon and S.A. Cosby’s All the Sinners Bleed.

Eld should’ve known better. Hell, he did know better. But watching lesser men hit big paydays—men who didn’t fight in Europe—grew unbearable. So, when the opportunity arises, he reaches for a little something extra for his family, and even more for himself. With Prohibition expiring in a matter of months, his turn from fisherman to rumrunner was supposed to be temporary. It seemed the perfect plan. Even Maggie, Eld’s normally sensible wife, is on board.

Things don’t go to plan. Amid the region’s players battle to capture the biggest piece of a shrinking pie, Eld’s tiny family operation is caught in the crossfire. One bitterly cold night packing whiskey across Lake Huron costs Eld dearly, and his family even more.

Hunted by gangsters and squeezed by the Depression, Eld, Maggie, and the children are scattered: Eld to Canada on a doomed quest, Maggie and her daughter forced into finding sanctuary in a faith more cult than religion. When they finally reunite, they may not even recognize each other as the same people who crossed their fingers and threw the dice for a shot at a better life.

Praise for The North Line by Matt Riordan:

“[A]n irresistible portrait of commercial fishermen fighting for survival in the early 1990s Alaska. […] The novel’s colorful dialogue and relentless pacing evoke the uncompromising headwinds in [the main character’s] path. This is a triumph of gritty realism. “
Publishers Weekly (Starred)

“[I]n an atmosphere worthy of a Jack London rock’n’roll, Matt Riordan has written a ruthless coming-of-age novel that leaves you breathless.”
Rolling Stone [France]

"Riordan is a superb storyteller, and The North Line is an all-engrossing, never-dull depiction of Alaska’s ‘wild west’ and those drawn to it. Sentence by sentence, Riordan’s dazzling language will transport readers into a world both challenging and packed with beauty and possibility."
Anchorage Daily News

"Riordan writes about both labor and the natural world with an equally keen eye, bringing out the inner torment of a complex character coming to terms with his place in the world."
CrimeReads, a Best Debut pick

“The North Line is a ruggedly erudite story that combines the best of the individualism of Jack London with the introspective ruminations of Raymond Carver . . . not to be missed.”
—S.A. Cosby New York Times bestselling author of All the Sinners Bleed

Donna Del Oro's dream since childhood (when she used to create her own comic books and share them with her friends) has been to write fiction. Escaping the humdrum of ordinary life always seemed to her an ideal form of self-entertainment. Better than TV and even better than some books! As soon as she retired from high school teaching (which was a suspenseful adventure in itself), Donna turned to fiction writing. Becoming a member of the RWA and Sisters in Crime has helped her to learn the craft and focus on what she needed to do to get published.

Besides writing Chica Lit, she writes romantic suspense and thrillers. THE DELPHI BLOODLINE is a hybrid thriller about the present-day descendants of an ancient bloodline of women with extraordinary psychic powers and how they must fight against enslavement by a ruthless high-tech tycoon.
