#Book #Review ~ Careful What You Witch For by Emma Jackson ~ @ESJackson1 @rararesources #WitchyRomance #GrumpySunshine #Magic

Careful What You Witch For by Emma Jackson

About the Book:

Two complete strangers.

One life-changing spell.

Becca Ashworth's family is in trouble and with their magical legacy under threat, it puts their small village of Biddicote at risk too. So going against the witching tenets to summon an ancestor for help seems like a small price to pay to fix the problem...at first.

Connor Lynch is the Witches Council's secret weapon and he's just been deployed to find out exactly what the Ashworths are up to. But how he ends up posing as Becca's fake husband at a magical inn in Cornwall as they hunt down a magical artefact is just as perplexing as the cheerful witch herself.

When their attraction for each other grows, Becca and Connor question everything they have been taught - and soon the missing artefact isn't the only thing they are searching for. As love collides with duty, it's clear that sometimes you need to be careful what you witch for...

My Review:

Careful What You Witch For is the second book in this series by Emma Jackson. I've not read the first one, but book two stands alone. Of course, there are some of the characters from book one but I didn't feel lost, having not read Witch You Weren't Here.

I was engaged from the start of Careful What You Witch For. Becca's determination to help her family began the story, drawing me in. I enjoyed the mix of romance and magic. Becca's dynamics with Connor are phenomenal and I enjoyed their grumpy-sunshine trope.

Careful What You Witch For is an amazing novel. I can't wait to go back and read book one.

I was provided a copy of this book.

About the Book:

Careful what you wish for!

Graduating to a fully-fledged witch on my upcoming birthday should be a momentous occasion, but when a local hairdresser turns up dead, I know it’s going to be one hell of a week.

Saltwater Cove’s resident infuriating fae looks like a good suspect for the murder, but insists she’s innocent and reveals a huge secret too amazing to be a lie. But if she didn’t do it… then who did?

The murder triggers the return of a dark force… dark enough to send even the most experienced witches into panic mode. Harriet, Jordi and Tyler join me as I try to find the culprit, putting my magical abilities to the ultimate test.

When the killer strikes even closer to home, I need to up my game if I’m going to keep evil at bay.…or have I finally met my supernatural match?

Read an Excerpt:

I leaned my head against my hand and pushed the last mouthful of meatloaf around my plate. My gaze was focused on the food in front of me, but my mind was a gazillion miles away.

Who would want Misty dead? What did she do that was so bad it would cause someone to murder her? And how did the Licarbre fern fit into the picture?

“…half-naked…” Tyler’s voice murmured in the back of my mind with that one word breaking through the haze.

Wait…half-naked? Who’s half-naked?

I looked up. “What?”

Tyler was watching me from under his lashes. “I said, ‘I think I’m going to run through the main streets of Saltwater Cove half-naked wearing nothing but my Tweety boxer shorts’.”

My back stiffened and my arm dropped to the table. My brain hurt from trying to make sense of his words. “What are you talking about?”

He sighed, placed his knife and fork together on his plate and pushed it to the centre of the table. Tyler’s face dropped, and his shoulders slumped. “I’m sorry. I was just trying to get your attention by lightening the mood, but it seems all I’ve done is confuse you.”

“Now I feel bad for letting my mind wander and not paying attention to you,” I said my chest tightening with each word. “It’s just that I keep going back and asking myself why. Why would someone want to kill Misty?”

With a werewolf best friend, a vampire ex-boyfriend, and a ghost for a hanger-on, Dahlia is far from the most unusual dweller of her sleepy small town, but she's the only one unable to leave. Dahlia has to perform at least one good deed per day—or she's one step closer to turning to stone.

Fortunately, the residents of Luna Lane have plenty of tasks for Dahlia to complete to avert the curse until Cable Woodward, fetching professor and nephew of her elderly neighbor, stops by for the semester on sabbatical. Attempting to help Cable's uncle work through the trauma of losing his wife, Dahlia uncovers the man's collection of board games, which leads to him reminiscing about the long-forgotten Luna Lane Games Club.

Dahlia reestablishes Games Club, only to find evidence of a number of horrible demises connected to the original group. Riddled with guilt, Dahlia wonders where her enchantments went wrong—or if there’s something more to the disaster.

Book Review, Feature, & #Giveaway ~ Witch Hunt (A Full Moon Mystery, Book 1) by Cate Conte @Lizmugavero #CozyMystery #witches

Witch Hunt
A Full Moon Mystery
Book 1
Cate Conte

Genre: Cozy Mystery
Publisher: Kensington
Publish Date: June 30, 2020
Mass Market Paperback: 320 pages
ISBN-10: 1496717600
ISBN-13: 978-1496717603
Digital ASIN: B083TQX2CT

About the Book:

Murder isn’t always crystal-clear . . . especially when the prime suspect discovers she’s a witch.

Violet Mooney owns The Full Moon crystal shop in quaint North Harbor, Connecticut. Still grieving her beloved grandmother’s recent unexpected death, she takes comfort in her fat orange cat Monty and her work. Not everyone in town is thrilled with her business, however. When disagreeable town councilwoman Carla Fernandez picks a fight over Violet’s "voodoo shop," the two have a very public confrontation. Of course, when Carla turns up dead, Violet gets little sympathy from the police as suspect #1.

But the shock of two policemen showing up at her door pales in comparison to the sudden appearance of her estranged mother Fiona and a surprise sister, Zoe. What Fiona reveals will rock her world and her sense of self—and reawaken her long-dormant mysterious power. Good thing. She’s gonna need it . . .

My Review:

I'm a huge fan of Liz Mugavero's Pawsitively Organic Mysteries and and her alter-ego, Cate Conte's
Cat Cafe Mystery series, so when I saw Cate launched a new series, I was all-in.

Violet Mooney is a Connecticut resident who owns a crystal shop. When one of the local councilwomen aggressively confronts Violet in a coffee shop one morning about her unorthodox shop, things get quite heated. After returning home and calling it a day, Violet is questioned by the local police after the councilwoman is later found dead....with an item owned by Violet at the scene. The hits keep coming when Violet leaves the police department and walks into a confrontation with two women who claim to be her long-lost mother and sister. It's been 27 years so who is this person and if it really is her mother, why now after all these years? The family reunion is anything but joyous for Violet, especially after learning she's from a long line of witches.

Witch Hunt is a wonderful first book in this new series. I was completely engaged in the story from beginning to end. Violet's past collides with her present, blindsiding her with a life she was never told about. Raised as a human, Violet is anything but. Her reaction to her mother and the wildly spun tale of her heritage was apt. I felt her disbelief, irritation, and sense of abandonment. Violet's fear of being arrested for something she didn't do permeated the pages as she tried to rectify her mother's return, her discovery of witches, and find out who really killed Carla. The story flowed along and was well-written. The author did a wonderful job of stacking the deck of suspects. I didn't consider the culprit until almost the big reveal and even then I questioned the motive. Of course, everything fell into place perfectly. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

I was provided a copy of this book to review.

Witches Protection Program by Michael Okon

Fantasy

Date Published: 09/30/2019

Publisher: WordFire Press

About the Book:

Wes Rockville, a disgraced law-enforcement agent, gets one last chance to prove himself and save his career when he’s reassigned to a 232-year-old secret government organization. The Witches Protection Program. His first assignment: uncover a billion-dollar cosmetics company’s diabolical plan to use witchcraft for global domination, while protecting its heiress Morgan Pendragon from her aunt’s evil deeds. Reluctantly paired with veteran witch protector, Alastair Verne, Wes must learn to believe in witches… and believe in himself. Filled with adventure and suspense, Michael Okon creates a rousing, tongue-in-cheek alternate reality where witches cast spells and wreak havoc in modern-day New York City.

Read an Excerpt:

Clearly, Wu had a bit of an attitude this morning. Scarlett wouldn’t let her talk down to her. What would Scarlett do; what would Scarlett do? Morgan racked her brain. Swallowing, she replied, her voice cold as ice, “I’ll get them there when I get them there. Deal with it.”

“You’re such a—”

“A what, Wu?” Morgan taunted. “Don’t forget, I answer directly to Bernadette, and she doesn’t take kindly to disrespect.”

Wu turned to lean on the sink, coming face to face with Morgan. “High and mighty today, aren’t we? You aren’t the only one with influence.” Wu’s eyes narrowed into slits. She had elegant hands that ended with long, graceful nails. She swirled them in the air, creating an eddy of wind that ruffled Morgan’s hair.

Morgan reached out, grabbing Wu’s hand in a viselike grip. “Don’t toy with me, and don’t use magic.” She squeezed hard, feeling one of the nails break. Wu struggled to break free, but Morgan maintained the upper hand. They stood nose to nose, hatred emanating from them both. She heard Wu’s quick intake of breath and let her snatch her hand away.

“I won’t forget this, Red.”

Morgan sniffed. “Don’t call me Red.” She turned to leave the bathroom.

“This isn’t over, Scarlett,” Wu called after her.

Morgan laughed as she exited the bathroom, thinking payback was going to be a bitch for Scarlett.

Read an EXCERPT:

The narrator filled in more information. “It wasn’t until this land became my land that the government decided to create an organization to protect women at risk. The Davina Doctrine went against everything that the Willas stood for. Even though they ran the risk of persecution, the Davinas chose to work with law enforcement to expose the evil deeds of the rival sisterhood. President George Washington established secret legislation under Title VI of the Control Act of 1792. The law was enacted to protect the good witches that exposed the evil deeds of their sisterhood.”

The screen went dark. There was only a chair in the center of a dimly lit stage. A single spotlight focused on the top of the blond actress’s head. Wes was right; it was the actress he’d suspected. She had a hit sitcom and two Emmys, and there was some recent Oscar talk about her last movie.

“Yes. There are witches. Living among us. They are women who believe in using their power to protect love and life. And then there are some who use their powers for all the wrong reasons.”

The camera came to rest on her beautiful face. She winked saucily as she placed a triangular witch’s hat on her head. “Welcome to the Witches Protection Program.”

Alastair smiled broadly. “I love that part.”

“That was Jennifer Anis—”

Read a Teaser from Witches Protection Program:

“Follow me, kid.” She led him down a gray hallway with mulberry-colored carpet, more plush than anything he’d ever seen in a governmental office. The place had to be a city block wide, with corridors branching off to other conduits. Here and there, a doorway opened. Wes saw that many were filled with groups of people sitting at polished conference tables. Some rooms were dark, with shades drawn, the light of a presentation on screens peeking through the slats of the blinds. Staff walked through the hallways, nodding to each other. Some were in pairs. All had a badge hanging on a chain or attached to a pocket. He squinted, but he couldn’t make out the impression on the shield. Forget about attempting to read it. He shrugged; while it looked official, it was unfamiliar. For a person who grew up with an entire family in law enforcement, he found it odd that he’d never seen it before. “What is this place?” he asked.

“This is where the magic happens,” she told him cryptically.

She opened the door, whispering, “Prepare to be amazed.” Then, with a giant pop of her gum, she disappeared.
