Read an Excerpt:

She pressed herself closer, the ice of her skin leaching into his chest.

He’d take it. If he could take all the cold from her, exchange it with his heat, he would.

Her eyelids fluttered. With what looked like immense effort, she finally opened them a crack. Pale blue eyes met his.

He rubbed her back. “You're okay. You're safe,” he murmured. “Can you tell me your name?”

She opened her mouth, but only a harsh rasp came out. His gut clenched as she licked her lips, swallowed, and tried again.

“Caroline,” she whispered.

Tony cleaned a patch of skin with an alcohol wipe, inserted the needle, and taped it to her arm. He held the saline bag in his hand and gently squeezed.

She swallowed then winced.

“Water.” He didn’t look to see who handed him the plastic bottle. He held the water to Caroline’s lips and slowly tilted it up.

She greedily sucked the liquid down. The look of betrayal she shot Jake when he took the bottle away almost had him laughing. Her face was so expressive, her spirit seemingly undiminished by her ordeal.

“You can't drink too much at one time,” he told her. At her continued scowl, he relented and gave her a tiny sip more. He put the bottle down. “Caroline. Sweetheart.” He dragged his thumb over her bottom lip, catching a stray drop of water. “Can you tell me what happened?”

“He tried to kill me,” she whispered.

Jake looked at Tony, meeting his narrowed gaze. His friend’s jaw went hard, his nostrils flaring. He'd heard her words, as well, and if there was one thing his squad wouldn’t stand for it was a man hurting a woman.

Jake leaned back against the rail as the boat sped towards the marina. The itch between his shoulder blades was finally gone. He looked down at the woman in his arms. Now he knew what his intuition had been trying to tell him.

Trouble had been coming.

And it had landed in his lap in the form of a woman.

Book Tour & #Giveaway ~ Tier Zero by D.B. Sayers @DirkSayers @RABTBookTours ~ The Knolan Cycle, Book 1 ~ #SciFi #Romance #Military

The Knolan Cycle, Book 1
Science Fiction (First Contact)/Science Fiction (Romance)/Science Fiction (Military)
Date Published: November 26, 2019
Publisher: PhoenixPhyre

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

They’re already here, and no one knows about it...yet.

About the Book:

Two bedrock assumptions seem to find their way into almost all science fiction tales of first contact between Earth and a hypothetical alien race. The first is that we will necessarily know when it happens and the second is that alien motives will likely be malevolent. In Tier Zero, Vol. I of The Knolan Cycle, first contact occurred over thirty years ago and no one on Earth...not even SETI...has a clue it has happened.

Martin Tellus is a graduate student at UCLA. His past is riddled with mystery, including a lifelong recurring dream he cannot explain. And just as a volcano’s first discharges of gas and magma often signal a coming eruption, Marty’s dreams signal a transformative change. The transformation arrives in the form of a “chance” meeting with Lysia in philosophy class. Their connection is instantaneous.

A seductive Asian woman with an untraceable accent, Lysia sticks to Marty’s thoughts. During a casual conversation after their next class, Lysia offers to teach Marty “eastern” philosophy. But to Marty’s surprise, her teachings open a mind-bridge between them, accompanied by an intense physical connection. And Marty’s progress doesn’t end with the connection he and Lysia share. As her teachings progress, he discovers new powers, at once exhilarating and disquieting. Not for the first time, he wonders,  who is Lysia really?

Marty’s questions have answers, but Lysia isn’t telling. At least not yet. The truth is she’s a Seeker and Waykeeper of Knola, in a nearby arm of our common galaxy. She’s been waiting for Marty’s awakening, specifically to be on hand to mentor him in the Way. As Marty’s powers grow with Lysia’s teachings, she realizes he’s unique in ways not even the Oracle, to whom Lysia answers foresaw.

Lysia finds Marty’s growth in the Way at once inspiring and unnerving. Sharing her concerns with her superiors back on Knola, she precipitates a fateful decision that will change Marty’s life and alter the history of both Earth and the Knolan Concordant. Tier Zero begins Marty’s perilous journey to a destiny beyond his—or anyone’s—imaginings.

Tier Zero, Volume I of The Knolan Cycle was published in November 2019. Eryinath-5, Volume II in the series is due out from PhoenixPhyre Publishing in 2021.

In 1957 jobs are scarce in rural Ashland, Alabama. Bobby Higgins is facing life decisions; his family’s farm struggles and threat of the draft hangs over 18-year-old males as the Cold War rumbles in the distance. Bobby heads off to boot camp, vowing to provide for his family from his pay. Between shore and sea duty, Bobby leaves broken hearts in every port.

Somehow they navigate their way through the trials of marriage and parenting as he fulfills his patriotic career and his promise to raise four willful daughters.

In the spring of 2004, his daughters are brought together by grief. They forge new bonds, sharing their joys, losses, regrets, and ultimately family secrets that will seal all their fates…if they can summon the courage to report for duty.

Read an Excerpt:

October, 1980

She stared at the venetian blinds, blurred by tears,

gripping the hospital bed rails. They should have

been tears of joy. Her family should have been standing

in the sparsely furnished room. Should have, would

have, could have.

Suck it up, cupcake, she thought. She knew this day

would come. She had to think about what was best for…

for him. And once she had finally decided, even the excitement

of her budding career had been overshadowed. She

scanned the room through the blur, now void of the nurse

who had taken pity on her solitude. The never-ending

loop of self-recrimination flooded her brain yet again.

Funny, she thought she’d be over it by now, that somehow

the loop would be flushed—like afterbirth.

How could she have been so careless? Why hadn’t she

focused on school instead of letting herself be attracted to

Larry’s blue eyes? With that twinkle and his boyish grin,

he had relentlessly worked his way into her heart on a

girls’ night out. Eventually, walks on the beach, romantic

dinners and line dancing at The Lazy B. If she had known

his orders were only five months away, would she have

continued the romance? She didn’t let just anyone in. She

was the Master of Unavailable and The Life of the Party.

But Larry had pulled her off center and made her laugh.

She thought he’d bore her. She thought she’d grow tired

of him. But no. Damn you, Larry. The aching memories

made this day that much more difficult.

There was a knock on the thick blonde door. “Dinner

time,” the nurse said. She stared at the tray as the nurse

gently placed it on the table. She peeked under the lid and

was hit with the aroma of chicken and broccoli. Typical

hospital menu; something from all the food groups.

“Does the chef suggest a wine pairing?” she smiled

weakly. Her nurse smiled back and checked the IV bag.

There was iced tea and a little carton of milk on the fiberglass

tray, the same type served up in school when her

biggest decisions were made on a playground, or when

sneaking a cigarette on the senior lawn behind the huge

live oak.

“When can I shower?” she asked, poking at the

mashed potatoes.

“After this bag runs out I’ll take out the IV.”

Her nurse’s deep blue scrubs were adorned by a shiny

chrome stethoscope. “Can I do anything else?” Her eyes

betrayed the facade of pity for her situation. This may

have been her first rodeo, but the nurse had seen too many

of her situations. “No, I’m good. Well, not good. I mean,

you’ve been wonderful,” she fumbled.

The nurse walked back to the door, patting her feet

with a soft hand on the way. She felt the tears welling

again. How she needed her sisters. But, no one could

know. She needed to get back on track at work and put

this behind her. How the hell do you put something like this

behind you, she thought to herself. She suspected it would

always haunt her. “Please, God, give me the peace I need. I

hope you know I’m not heartless. This is for his future. I’m

still a kid.”

There was another knock on the door. As the couple

entered the room, he was carrying a fast-food bag, Taco

Bell. She carried flowers. It had to be as awkward for them

as it was for her. “You’re a lifesaver! I hope there are tacos

in that bag,” she said, with as much bravado as she could

muster. But she knew there was a deeper meaning to the

first part of her comment.

“Did y’all finally decide on his name?” she asked.

Book Blitz ~ The Augmented Man by Joseph Carrabis ~ Sci-Fi Military Thriller ~ @JosephCarrabis @RABTBookTours #rabtbooktours theaugmentedman #josephcarrabis

Sci-Fi Military Thriller
Date Published: July 2019
Publisher: Black Rose Writing

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

About the Book:

What do you do with a deadly weapon when it's no longer needed?

Nicholas Trailer is the last of The Augmented Men, beings created first by society and completed by a political group the public can't even imagine exists. Captain James Donaldson takes severely abused and traumatized children and modifies them into monsters capable of the most horrifying deeds without feeling any remorse or regret

But the horrors of war never stay on the battlefield. They always come home.

Battling what society and science has made him, Nick Trailer discovers he is loved. From the horrors of childhood to the horrors of a war, what does it take for someone to find true love and peace? Especially when everyone has their own agenda, from the senators who sanctioned his making to the Governor of Maine who wants to use Nick's struggle to propel himself to the White House.

The Augmented Men were good at war, perhaps a little too good. Now they have to come home...or do they? What do you do with man-made monsters? Nick must decide if his friends are his friends and if his enemies are his enemies, all while protecting the woman he loves.

And are you truly the last of your kind?

What if you must remain a monster to defeat a monster? Will you sacrifice love to protect what you love?

Praise for The Augmented Man:

"... a masterful tale of how greed and power can corrupt the better judgement of a man." -Rox Burkey, co-author of the award-winning Enigma Series

"Emotional and touching." -John R. Beyer, ex-SWAT, author of Black Opal Books Police Thrillers

"In the same vein as Orson Scott Card's, Ender's Game - Joseph Carrabis's newest novel, The Augmented Man, thrusts the reader into an unknown but realistic world of the future where governments create devastating war weapons of their choosing....This exciting story will make the reader truly question if such things as The Augmented Man could or does exist under the blackness of government secrecy. At the conclusion of the novel, the reader can only pray it is strictly fiction and not a harbinger of things to come in the near future." - John R. Beyer, award winning author of fictional short stories and novels

"Carrabis writes a masterful tale of how greed and power can corrupt the better judgement of a man. Although this story is set in the future, it actually seems plausible that the sorts of physiological and psychological modifications discussed and inflicted on some of the characters could and have occurred in the name of military dominance. It was fascinating to me how Carrabis compared the capability of Navy Seals as an example against the next gen efforts as well as the results." - Rox Burkey, CoAuthor of the award winning Enigma Series

Read an Excerpt:

1 April 2053

Trailer closed his eyes and sat at the end of the bar where the cigarette burned, cheap black Formica countertop met the wall. He eased himself onto the last stool, tucking into the corner in the dim light, a spider hiding out of sight at the edge of its web. His fingers hovered over the cigarette burns closest to him as if divining their cause, sensing them like small, unhealed wounds, seeing the people involved, learning if each burn was an accident or intentional.

The door opened and he smelled the cool April evening on his skin. It was followed by the alcoholic breath and sweat of two men and a woman they supported between them.

Trailer brought his attention back into the bar, collating the activity immediately around him.

The barkeeper, a heavy smelling man gnawing a toothpick, his face somewhere between needing a shave and growing a beard, walked over to Trailer. “Yeah?”

“A beer. Whatever you got.”

The man grunted and walked to the other end of the bar. When he left, Trailer opened his eyes. A river of tattoos flowed up the man’s left arm. An old style claw prosthetic served as his right, its hinges and catches polished like silver and glinting in the mirrored bar light. He wore black jeans and a tie-dyed t-shirt over powerful shoulders and an ample gut. Trailer closed his eyes again as the man returned. It seemed to Trailer that the man swam upstream in a river of his own sweat.

He placed a bottle of Coors in front of Trailer. “Six.”

“Huh?”

“Six. Six dollars.”

“Can I run up a tab? I’ll probably stay a while.

The man shook his head. “Uh-uh.”

Trailer handed him the money and nodded at the prosthetic.

“Amazonas?”

The man eyed him and shook his head cautiously. “Loreto.”

“I was there, too.”

The man eyed him a moment longer then nodded as he walked away.

“Uh-huh.”

A five-man band walked onto a stage surrounded by a plexiglass cage reinforced with steel fencing, closed the cage door, set up and tested their instruments.

A woman screamed from a room hidden by a beaded curtain.

Trailer stood up. The barman caught Trailer’s shirt in his claw. “You gonna drink your beer or what?”

Trailer stood a head and a half taller than the barman. He said nothing, closing his eyes when the woman screamed again.

“Eddie, Bill?” the barman called out. “We got ourselves a pretty boy here.”

Two scar-faced men got up from a table near the door and walked towards Trailer. He shook his head slowly, searching with his ears as a blind man might search out a strange sound. He moved his head from side to side and made a sound, quiet and deep in his chest, a great cat purring. His head snapped back and shook. He whispered, “No...no,” as if tasting something tart, bitter, something he wanted to spit out.

Eddie and Bill smiled as they moved closer. Thin and wiry, Eddie had a chain around his waist held on by a drop hook. Rolled back sleeves revealed lean, muscular arms, but with shoulders too high and too stiff for the arms they supported. He wore tight-fitting pants and taped his boots, the laces stopping half way up. The right boot’s tape stopped half way down on one side.

Trailer’s eyes snapped open wide and he catalogued, his irises retreating as if aflame. “Parkerized Military Machetes, fifty-centimeter, sheath cross harness. Walther P38 9mm Short nine round capacity, right ankle lift grip, Rockwell C57-59 EK Combat Knife left ankle rip release.”

Bill’s face and scalp looked as if he’d been lyed. Short and squat, the lines on his clothes were clean, hiding no weapons but revealing the scarred musculature common to bikers who played too hard too long.

The woman screamed again. Trailer counted Eddie and Bill’s footsteps by sound, measuring the two men by heartbeat. He felt Eddie’s muscles twitch as Eddie thought about dropping his chain belt.

Before Eddie’s thought became action, Trailer’s spine released and he grew.

The barman’s claw didn’t open in time and he screamed as his prosthetic ripped out of its socket.

Trailer’s eyes closed and his face relaxed, becoming calm, pacific, the face of a child fallen asleep. He brought his head down hard onto Eddie’s skull and smiled at the sharp-sounding crack.

About the Book:

As the sole survivor of a Taliban POW camp, Steve Petersen is damaged goods. He is convinced that he left his sanity within the horror-filled walls that held him captive for the better part of a year. His mind is trapped in moments of graphic, soul-crushing flashbacks, and his only solace is the momentary reprieve he gains from alcohol and drugs.

He should save the widow Anna from his own special brand of crazy. Leaving is not as easy as one would think, and he finds himself drawn into a world of real life problems such as folding laundry, and what to make for dinner.

This new way of life eases his need for drowning his pain in substances and offers moments of quiet healing – until Anna disappears. To save her, Steve must face the demons that have tortured him for so long and return to the place where it all began. Afghanistan.

Read an Excerpt:

Life outside could sure be exhausting. Anna went into the kitchen, and Steve rested his head back and closed his eyes. Listening to her hum a song, just a little out of tune as she loaded the coffee maker soothed his nerves.
A hard rattling sound made him open his eyes again.
Gunshots, and they were close.
Anna still sang, and she would be an easy target.
He ran through the apartment, making sure to stay away from the windows. Peeking around the corner, his beautiful fiancée was oblivious to the danger.
Women.
How did they survive?
He sprung out from his hiding place behind the wall, shoved her down on the floor, and threw himself over her. After all she did for him, protecting her with his own body was the least he could do.
Anna wheezed, clearly trying to draw a breath.
“Sssh, they’re coming.”
She lay on her back, and the question in her eyes was clear. Have you lost your mind? Of course he had, a long time ago. She should know.
When she opened her mouth, he covered it with his hand, so she couldn’t draw attention to them.
“Don’t you hear them? The shots?”
She shook her head and closed her fingers around his wrist, attempting to pull his hand away.
“I think we’re safe, but be very quiet.”

About the Author:

Maria Hammarblad is an author and bass player whose fascination with books started early. Before she could read or write, she made her mother staple papers together to resemble books. She drew suns in them and claimed they were "The Sun Book." They were all about the sun.

The four-year-old also claimed her existence on Earth was a mistake, the result of a horrible mix-up, and that her real family would come to bring her home to her own planet at any time. This didn't happen, but her fascination with books and other worlds stayed with her.

Besides novels, she also writes award-winning screenplays, enjoys photography, and works with animal rescue organizations.
