About Depths of Night: 

After a harrowing end to a long sea journey, the famed northern warrior Ragnar Stormbringer and a force of warriors step ashore in the lands of the Petranni, a tribal people known for their workings in silver and gold. The search for plunder takes a sharp turn when homesteads, villages, and temple sites show signs of being recently abandoned. When it is discovered that the Petranni have all taken refuge within a massive stronghold, Ragnar and the others soon fall under the shadow of an ancient, deadly adversary. Wielding his legendary war axe Raven Caller, Ragnar finds his strength tested like never before. 


About the Author: 

Stephen Zimmer is an award-winning author and filmmaker based out of Lexington Kentucky. His works include the Rayden Valkyrie novels (Sword and Sorcery), the Rising Dawn Saga (Cross Genre), the Fires in Eden Series (Epic Fantasy), the Hellscapes short story collections (Horror), the Chronicles of Ave short story collections (Fantasy), the Harvey and Solomon Tales (Steampunk), and the forthcoming Faraway Saga (YA Dystopian/Cross-Genre). Stephen’s visual work includes the feature film Shadows Light, shorts films such as The Sirens and Swordbearer, and the forthcoming Rayden Valkyrie: Saga of a Lionheart TV Pilot. Stephen is a proud Kentucky Colonel who also enjoys the realms of music, martial arts, good bourbons, and spending time with family.

When it is discovered that the Petranni have all taken refuge within a massive stronghold, Ragnar and the others soon fall under the shadow of an ancient, deadly adversary. Wielding his legendary war axe Raven Caller, Ragnar finds his strength tested like never before. 


Ragnar Stormbringer is looking forward to trading in his sea legs for a bit and walking the land occupied by the Petranni tribe. Ragnar promised his crew all the riches they could carry from the tribe that is known for utilization of precious metals. Upon landfall they curiously discover that homes and shelters have been abandoned, leaving behind precious items that are easy and quick to move. The fortress of the Petranni seems to be where everyone is hunkered down so Ragnar sends out various search parties to scour the land for the reason. When one party doesn't return, he and a few of his trusted crew go in search for them. What they find is horrific and explains the absence of tribe members outside the gates of their fortress. Ragnar and his crew now find themselves involve with ancient goddesses and Ragnar may be the only one who can same them.

Depths of Night captured my attention from the very beginning and kept me engaged. The author did a great job writing an interesting and action-packed novella. The story is well-paced; not too fast or too slow. The dialogue is smooth and understandable. The world building is descriptive and played out like a movie. I enjoyed meeting the characters and learning a bit about them. The characters were introduced to the reader without a lot of backstory but that's okay. We got what we needed for the story and not a lot of fluff or filler. I look forward to the next novella in the series.
