About the Author:

Bob Stavnitski experienced a seemingly idyllic childhood and enjoyed a successful, frequently stand-out high school experience, anticipating a career in government or diplomacy. Then suddenly, his string of successes ended abruptly, and for a very long time. Unbeknownst to Bob, he would experience major unchecked deepening bipolar depression for fifteen years. He expressed his immediate reaction, “I’m not going to allow mental illness to take the rest of my life away from me.”

Bob spares a little, candidly sharing the story. He is convinced there is beauty, even brilliance, in the bipolar brain and soul that can enhance our understanding of the world around us and allows bipolar individuals to experience truth and beauty in the human condition that others with “normal” brains miss out on. Bob believes that it is possible to accomplish a sustainable comeback and make left-behind dreams become new realities.

Poopie Suits & Cowboy Boots by Frank Hood ~ @RABTBookTours #RABTBookTours #PoopieSuitsandCowboyBoots #FrankandCharlesHood #Nonfiction

Cold War Biography - Non Fiction

About the Book:

Poopie Suits and Cowboy Boots is a story of a young man volunteering to serve aboard a US Submarine, and the life changing journey he had to take to even get on a submarine.  Then, once aboard, you go through the day-to-day life while on the front lines of the Cold War at sea.  The scary incidents, the wild times in ports of call, the ongoing testing the men were subjected to by the crew.  Historical touch points anchor the story in the mid to late 60's, a time of the nascent space program and the Vietnam War.   Frank's story serves as a frame work to explain how submarine systems operate, in simple easy to understand terms.  There is a lot packed into this true story, and we hope that those who read it will come away with an enhanced understanding of what these men went through, the sacrifices that had to made, the unrelenting pressure of zero mistakes in an always potential deadly environment. An deep insight into the Silent Service.

About the Author:

Frank Hood received a NROTC Scholarship to Purdue and started his formation to being commissioned as a Naval Officer.  For his Senior Cruise, he was assigned to a WWII era submarine and he saw, first hand, the loose rules coupled with the cool and professional execution of duties, along with the great fun they crew had when the pressure was off. He greatly appreciated the tight camaraderie they had, and he knew that is what he wanted when he graduated.

This is the genesis of this book.  For over 1 year of Nuclear Power and Submarine Officer training, to 3 years of keeping the Soviet Submarine Force at bay, this experience was one of the most impacting of his life.  Post Navy, he worked as an Engineer, Sales Person, and Business Owner.  Retired to New Hampshire and enjoying life. Active in the submarine veteran community, the deep bond formed 50 years before is even stronger and more appreciated.

Charles Hood is a physician practicing in South Carolina. For years he was intrigued by his older brother Frank’s service on a hot running, fast attack submarine, but could not get Frank to ever talk about it. Finally, he convinced Frank by saying, “Even without the secret mission details, your day-to-day life is a unique story, and if you don’t tell it so others can appreciate what you went through, who will?”  With that Frank dictated his story and Charles word smithed it and add additional research.  Vetting by many other sub vets helped reduce the errors caused by 50 year old memories.  The resulting story has been acclaimed by submarine veterans and civilians alike.  It is in its 5th Edition, have had other details and stories added to the original content.

My journey as an immigrant to the United States started in 1988 with my husband, my dreams, aspiration and hope. We adapted to the American way of life and was able to build our American dream.

Our American born children, Moustafa and Dena, have incorporated their heritage with American culture and are committed to education and helping others in the community.

Upon arrival to the United States, I worked as a waitress while pursuing my degree. In 1992, I obtained my master’s degree in nursing and began my career as a nurse practitioner.

We all share different challenges. The important thing is to never give up. Persistence is a great quality and one that we should all look to acquire.

In 2013, I wrote two books on leadership and empowerment while pursuing my Doctoral degree.

In 2015, I faced a real test of courage, I felt betrayed from within—I was diagnosed with cancer. I know that we all have struggles that we want to face on our own behind closed doors; we feel that if people were to discover them, we would be vulnerable and never looked at the same way.

I finally mastered the courage to stand before everyone and share my daily struggles. While doing chemotherapy, I attended classes for my doctorate and worked part-time.

I would be lying if I said I woke up every day feeling positive. However, I pushed through because that was the only option I had. I pursued the things that fulfilled my mind and wellbeing.

Keep pushing, stay positive and always believe.

What is happening right now

As participants in modern society, our bodies are exposed to startling numbers of chemicals from the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe and the products we consume. For instance, did you know that many pregnant women and their children are exposed to far more chemical toxins today than a few decades ago? Most newborns today have chemical contaminants in their blood right from birth. Did you know that much of the food sold in the U.S. is far inferior in quality compared to the same foods sold in other nations? Or that some food dyes used in the U.S., if not banned outside the U.S., require a warning notice because they have been shown to cause hyperactivity and cancer? Or did you know that GMOs need to be labeled in many countries but not in the U.S.?

The combination of excessive amounts of toxicity, coupled with a deficit in nutritious and immune boosting foods, is devastating for the physical and mental development of our children.

Furthermore, our minds are exposed to an overwhelming amount of information, resulting in a kind of information overload that includes a lot of negative images. In emergency situations, staying aware of what is happening is indeed a good thing, but in our day-to-day lives, constant negative input can and will influence our thoughts, our happiness, and our health.

Our mental health is an increasing concern in this day and age. It’s especially important to analyze the way we treat it. For example, in the U.S., ADHD is considered a biological disorder and is treated with medications such as Ritalin. In other countries, the causes of ADHD are believed to be psycho-social and situational. Therefore the treatment is focusing on improving the child’s social context rather than prescribing a drug. In the U.S., we use more antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs than any other country, even starting treatment in patients as young as 2 or 3 years old.

The use of these drugs validates the gut-brain connection. If we are using oral drugs like antidepressants to influence the mood, why not use this connection and positively affect our mental health with the right foods? In the same way, why not provide a positive environment and use our media-infused culture to feed our mind happy and uplifting information?

In today’s society, our souls do not get much attention, time or space anymore, even though studies show that spirituality has a clear impact on our mental health and wellness. Spirituality is associated with significantly lower rates of depression, substance abuse, risk-taking, or thrill seeking. Nothing else known to science and medicine has such a broad-reaching and powerful preventative influence on the daily decisions that make or break health and wellness.
