About the Book:

A single dad rancher and a rich city girl bump heads—and more—in this first cowboy romance in the Griffith Brothers series.

For Christian Griffith, his number one rule is: You ride in my truck, you let me open the door. Another problem in his busy life was the last thing he needed. Unfortunately, argumentative Cassandra Parker showing up on his family’s ranch and sticking her nose in their business isn’t even his biggest problem—neither is the fact that with nowhere else to live, she’s in his house. The biggest problem? The engagement ring on her finger.

Cassandra has a life motto: If you’re going to kill someone, make it look like an accident, cry at the funeral, admit to nothing, and deny everything. Exiled from New York and stranded on a cattle ranch, she didn’t exactly choose to be Christian’s problem. Living with the single dad and his daughters was a downgrade from her high-rise office and city comforts, but she agreed for one simple reason: desperation to save her job and salvage what’s left of her career. And this hot cowboy won’t lasso her into staying a second longer than necessary.

My Review:

Dust Storm is the fantastic first book in The Griffiths Brothers series.

Christian Griffith is an old-school cowboy. Gentlemanly, hard working and hands-on ranch manager, and single dad to two girls. The last thing he needs is a consultant to tell him how to improve his ranch. When Casandra Parker shows up dressed to the nines including heels that make his head spin, Christian knows he's in trouble. The engagement ring on her finger keeps him respectable but if and when she removes it, all bets are off. Christian has the patience of a saint. I loved watching him come undone around Cassandra.

Cassandra is prickly, loves to argue, has a stubborn streak a mile wide, and can't believe she ended up exiled to a Texas cattle ranch while her fiancé cavorts around Europe. The price she's paying to salvage her reputation is almost too high but she perseveres. Not a kid or people person, being trapped in a house with a single dad and his two daughters, on a cattle ranch with free-range animals, miles from civilization and good wi-fi challenges her. I loved watching her soften toward her roommates, living conditions, and four-legged companions.

I really enjoyed Dust Storm. The author created an incredible world that, while focusing on Christian and Cassandra, focuses on his entire family. I loved the storytelling and how the author intertwined Christian and Cassandra. She didn't hide ranch life and delivered some passages that bring the reality of ranch life to the story. It's not wine and roses and can be scary and dangerous.

My grandmother was a dairy farmer (much smaller scale than a ranch) so I grew up around cows. I watched a cow give birth earlier than anticipated and the bull, who was still in the pasture with his ladies, tried to stomp it to death. My grandma and aunt had to drive their car into the field and get between the bull and the calf and get it into the car before he figured out how to get around them. It was scary for everyone involved, including the spectators.

Cassandra was pretty hard throughout most of the book. I loved her assertiveness and take-charge attitude, but I had a hard time connecting with her at first. The person Cassandra is at the beginning of the book is not someone I would want in my life. She was too uptight and emotionless. The person Cassandra becomes is more my speed. Still assertive and a control freak but with feelings.
