Dr. Mia Reid arrives on the Isle of Skye for a summer dig. She learns her friend and trusted colleague, Dr. Ethan Carter, is dead and valuable artifacts are missing.

Interpol agent and Mia’s former lover, Luke Forbes, is working the case with the police. They suspect murder and a smuggling ring.

Mia and her team uncover a treasure with ties to Bonnie Prince Charlie. Then two students are kidnapped, forcing Mia to trade the treasure for their release. During the rescue, she finds a collection of missing artifacts.

Are the smugglers and kidnappers the same people?

Can she dig up the truth before someone else dies?

The Lakeview Museum had sold out the event tickets a few weeks ago. This summer fundraiser was an opportunity for the board to meet the public and encourage donations for their educational programs.

Mia saw her gran being escorted by an older gentleman. She thought the man looked familiar but couldn’t place him. She raised her glass to her and smiled. Gran nodded in her direction and the gentleman walked her to Mia.

“Gran, you look fabulous.” Mia bent to kiss her on the cheek.

“Thank you, my dear. That necklace looks wonderful. And you are stunning. Charles Gordon, do you know my granddaughter, Dr. Mia Reid?”

“I do. My company’s funding the dig she’s working on this summer. Nice to see you again,” Charles said.

“Are you on the museum’s board?” Mia smiled, glad she could place him.

“Yes, and I’m doing my best to have your grandmother join our group. Her experience working with other boards would be invaluable to us.”

Mia glanced at her Gran. Charles was laying it on thick. He’d better back off or Gran would turn them down flat.

“I wonder Charles, could you freshen my drink please?” Gran asked.
“Of course.”
Mia watched as he strode toward the bar. “Gran, be nice. You know they’d appreciate your help.”
“Yes, I know, and I believe in what the museum is doing. I’ll see what I can do to help. Now, tell me about this dig.”
Mia took a sip of champagne. “I signed up for this one in January. Ethan suggested we work together this summer.”
“And what’s happening with your career at the university?” Gran put her hand under Mia’s elbow as they walked around the exhibit featuring art made by Indigenous women from across Canada.

Mia frowned. “It’s not going great.” She explained what Dr. Bateman had told her and Christopher Wilson that morning. “I don’t think I’m in line for the position.”

“Anything I can do?” Gran asked.

Mia shook her head. “Thanks, but I doubt it. I know I can find work.”

Charles arrived with a fresh drink for Gran. “Here you go, Marie.”

Gran smiled. “Thank you. I was just about to tell Mia something that may interest you as well. Have either of you heard rumblings about artifacts being sold at private auctions reaching astronomical prices?”

Mia shook her head. “No, I haven’t.”
Charles sighed. “I have. I have no clue who’s doing this.”
Gran’s lips closed together in a straight line. “I don’t either. And I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground. The people involved aren’t the antique dealers I worked with on Queen Street. People coming in from all over the world. And the auctions take place in private.”

“How does this work?” Mia asked.

“Apparently, items are posted online and people apply for invitations to attend a special auction. I’m certain the artifacts are stolen property. Now, Mia, I need you to promise you’ll be careful. The antiquities world is changing quickly, and I’m worried about you.”

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but I have to take Marie to meet other board members.” Charles took Marie’s elbow.

“I’ll touch base with you before I leave,” Mia said to her grandmother.
