The blue light of the construct's life energy illuminates the semi-darkness of the Training Room. A furry creature with burning yellow eyes and a mouthful of sharp teeth turns and hisses at me. I have no time to reflect on what type of creature this might be before the battle is joined. I have the Spawner set to random, so I never know what type of foe I will face or how many of the constructs will attack. Will they have claws or weapons? Be melee or ranged? Use magic or steel? Poison or ... the list could go on and on.

You never know what you're going to get when you activate the Spawner. All you know is that the creatures are out to kill you. They are set to your level. And to your gear score. With the playing field level, we fight skill-against-skill. I even cancel my Starter Zone immunity to pain upon entering the Training Room to remove that advantage.

I don't want false, easy victories. I want to learn. As my dad used to say, the more you practice, the more you improve your skills, the better chance you have for survival. Just because I'm in a game-like world rather than the real world doesn't make this expression any less true. The game rewards effort and determination. Beating up on creatures less powerful than you teaches nothing.

And I have to be ready. The realms outside the Starter Zone are harsher and more physically and mentally demanding. But I can't stay here if I want to progress in life, if I want to support my family.
