Read an Excerpt:

Jane Fairchild lowered the flute from her mouth and curtseyed to the audience scattered around the lawn. She could not help smiling at their cheers, even as Toby Scott, the leader of their consort, bent down towards her and muttered, ‘You weren’t supposed to play that. You promised to behave.’

They had played one solo each, as agreed, but Jane had abandoned the Gounod she had rehearsed for some variations of her own on a nameless tune from her childhood. Toby despised that kind of music making and none of the others cared for it much. Jane had meant to be well-behaved this evening, when they wanted to impress Lady Waverley and her guests. The consort, music students in their final year, had been invited to play at this garden party in July chiefly because the Waverleys’ son had been at school with Toby, but their guests were likely to include several potential patrons and aficionados who might help them in their fledgling careers. The year was 1914.

The trouble was, as Jane had looked round in the deep evening light, she had felt a need to stir up the audience. They stood in little clusters under the trees or on the paths in the rose garden and listened politely between sips of champagne, but they were not properly engaged with the music. Most of them were young and busy flirting by whisper or touch, or staid and on the edge of somnolence. At least Jane had caught their attention and made some of them laugh.

She shook her head at Toby while she put her flute away and did not answer him. Now that they had finished their set, people were quick to surround the musicians and compliment them, and she was able to dodge round him without a fuss. She was thirsty, so she headed towards the refreshments promised earlier. She doubted champagne would be provided for the musicians but lemonade would be more welcome in any case.

A stranger stepped in front of her, a young man, dark and thin. ‘That last piece was the real stuff. Couldn’t you strangle your First Violin with his own strings and play some more of it?’ he said.

‘Good evening, Mr.…?’ Jane said.

The stranger inclined his head. ‘Lucian Hunter, at your service.’ There was a glint in his eye, as though at a joke he did not expect other people to understand.

‘Mr. Scott is a very fine musician and a friend of mine.’

‘But deadening. You ought to quarrel with him and strike out on your own.’

Jane drew breath to argue and then decided not to explain herself to this person, whoever he was.

‘I don’t think so,’ she said. ‘Excuse me, I should go and find Lady Waverley.’

‘Wait!’ Hunter’s voice was not loud but compelling. He spoke clear English but with the shadow of an accent Jane could not place. ‘I have something else to ask you. Will you meet me next week and play for me?’

‘I’m afraid not.’

‘I could pay you for some lessons. Surely you take pupils?’

Not arrogant young men, Jane thought. ‘It really isn’t possible,’ she said, and turned away.

She felt a hand on her arm and swung back to glare at Hunter. He dropped his clasp at once but he said, ‘You’ll regret it if you don’t. It’s the music I want, you know.’

‘Not from me. Or from anyone else I know if you lay a finger on me again.’

His smile was swift and infuriating.

‘I don’t need to, now,’ he said and turned away.

“Genesis, are you sure you accept this punishment in place of Liam?” Jerimiah asked as steadily as he could before his voice broke off.

“I accept it,” I said coolly, keeping my eyes on Liam. “I love you,” I whispered to Liam as the whip cracked down across my back.

Tears spilled out of my eyes and across my cheek as the pain from the whip seared through my body. The nerves burned where the warm blood leaked out across my back. My knees buckled beneath me as I tried to remain strong. I would not appear weak in front of these people. They would not break me or change me.

Flash forward nine months to a very pregnant, insanely hormonal and cranky as hell Kaylee. If the pregnancy wasn't enough to drive her crazy, Talree's enemies are tap dancing on her last nerve. The Shani Queen Mother, a psychotic alien with a bone to grind against Talree, decided she wanted the planet Tartum--a barren piece of crap loaded with Ditrum crystals, and part of the Coletti Empire. Her master plan? Kidnap Kaylee and hold her for ransom. If the Overlord refused to give Tartum to the Queen Mother, she would feed Kaylee and her son to the Tai-Kok.

Reality Bites

Coletti Warlords Book #4

About the Book:

Bree never thought her dimwit act, military grade mace, cattle prod, or dumping a ton of stinky manure on Jaylan's head would encourage his pursuit. Who knew a Coletti warlord would think being zapped with a cattle prod as foreplay? Or that a clever opponent only heightened his enjoyment of the chase?

The chase comes to an abrupt halt when the Tai-Kok attack Tucson, forcing Bree to team up with the Coletti warlord to stop them. Suddenly plucked from Earth by a crazed Tai-Kok commander, Jaylan and Bree find themselves stranded on a hostile alien world, and being tracked by a deadly Askole assassin. Neither of them expected to find love.

Zoey Jones is determined to find her mother's killer. Surrendering to a fierce Coletti warrior is the last thing on her mind. When Voss is determined to make Zoey his mate, she unleashes her own brand of whoop-ass to discourage his pursuit. When her clever disguises, skunk perfume, stun gun, and smoke bombs fail to stop the ruthless warlord, she's forced to negotiate her surrender: she would mate with him if he would help her find her mother's killer.

Just My Luck
Coletti Warlords #1

Kaylee Jones is a trouble magnet. Chaos and disaster are her faithful companions. She belongs to the thin blue line protecting Earth from the Tai-Kok, alien predators who consider our world an all-you-can-eat banquet.

Her crappy luck puts her on the alien freaks- most wanted list and lands her in one of their prison cells. Her roommate? A very hungry vampire. Okay, Talree's really a Coletti Warlord who decides to make her his mate. Kaylee's definitely not willing but isn't strong enough to fight him off and now he owns her mind, body and soul.

She'll admit the sex is hot and the bossy jerk has agreed to save Earth from annihilation. The bad news is, Warlords aren't benevolent do-gooder types and there is a price for his help: the women of Earth.

And the really bad news is, Talrees' low-down conniving brother, Malik, has joined forces with the alien freaks and now Kaylee and Talree have to stop them from destroying both their worlds.

The Warlord's Comeuppance
Coletti Warlords #2

Stealing from a warlord and giving him the one finger salute as I made my getaway was not the brightest thing I’d ever done. Okay, it was an incredibly stupid stunt.

Did I mention that this particular Coletti warlord is the most feared in the entire galaxy? That Zarek’s the ultimate predator and even the other warlords are scared spitless of him? That he never ever stops until he either captures or kills his prey?

Yeah, I have the big, bad after me and all because of one little finger. Okay and a Ditrim crystal the size of my fist. Am I worried? Of course, only an idiot doesn’t fear a very angry Coletti warlord. But, I am very good at what I do. Bad news is, so is Zarek.

Book #Review: Knot What You Think (A Quilting Mystery, Book 5) by Mary Marks #CozyMystery

Knot What You Think
A Quilting Mystery, Book 5

Cozy Mystery

Kensington

July 25, 2017

Mass Market Paperback: 288 pages

ISBN-13: 978-1496701824
E-Book ASIN: B01M8OZL19

About the Book:

The newest member of Martha’s close-knit quilting circle has an eye for couture. But when the designer’s fingerprints are found blanketing a crime scene, Martha must prove that he didn’t have a hand in homicide!

Martha Rose is alarmed by the discovery of Dolleen Doyle’s dead body, especially when evidence suggests a fellow quilter committed the crime. Set on clearing her pal, Martha searches for answers—but with ties to a convicted fraudster’s stolen millions and a secret office room, the victim’s past raises even more questions. As Martha inches towards the culprit, she learns that wrapping the case up—and living to baste another square—will be trickier than she ever imagined . . .

Add to Your Shelf on Goodreads:

Martha, Birdie, Lucy, and Jazz are back in Mary Marks' 5 book in her Quilting Mystery series.  Jazz is a murder suspect when one of his friends, Dolleen Doyle, is found dead.  Jazz's prints are all over the murder weapon and inside Dolleen's home.  Knowing he isn't a murderer Martha begins her sleuthing to help clear Jazz's name.   Her beau, Crusher, supports her as she puts clues together and creates a murder board.  Her ex, Arlo, isn't nearly as big of a fan.

As the murder investigation continues, Martha discovers that Dolleen had some skeletons in her closet.  As she gets closer to identifying the suspect, much to the chagrin of the real detectives, things heat up.  Add in a boyfriend and an ex-boyfriend and the murder of Dolleen isn't the only thing heating up.  Danger mounts as the mystery unfolds - and there is more than one story line that takes place in Knot What You Think.

Martha Rose is the typical heroine - totally not a crime solver/fighter but makes it her duty to dive in head first whether there's water in the pool or not. Martha Rose puts herself into vary precarious situations and breaks a lot of laws in her quest to find the killer. Birdie and Lucy are great sidekicks and I enjoy theirs roles in each Quilting Mystery.  The women quilt together, providing a bit of murder mystery down time

Mary Marks does another wonderful job building up the mystery and keeping the responsible party a secret. The truth of the situation is revealed at the perfect time and the person responsible is not the person I thought it would be.  The writing flows well and is concise.  The author's writing style is fluid and smooth and so easy to get lost in.  The romantic elements of Knot What You Think are subtle and don't overshadow the mystery.  The entire novel is engaging; never a dull moment.

Developing a TV Pilot by Stephen Zimmer ~ Rayden Valkyrie Celebration ~ @SGZimmer

Author and Filmmaker: Stephen Zimmer
Rayden Valkyrie Celebration
August 16-23, 2017

Please Welcome Stephen Zimmer to Sapphyria's Books today!!

Developing a TV Pilot

It has been a very challenging and creative process developing a TV Pilot centered around Rayden Valkyrie; a character that has a deep connection to me and is one that I enjoy writing more than any other across all of my works. The pilot episode has been designed to demonstrate a series concept, with the aim of finding a network to work with in developing a full season of episodes.

Of course, everything begins with a screenplay. Unlike writing a book or a short story, a screenplay is a blueprint, in a manner of speaking. It is much more bare bones in that it does not contain lots of description, and does not go into character's minds. Dialogue, brief descriptions of settings and actions, and specific visuals and movements are contained in the pages of a screenplay to serve as a foundation as all of the other elements in a production come into the collaborative process, from directors, to art departments, props, costuming, special effects, and many others.

A final screenplay enables a production to develop a cast list, location list, costuming and prop needs, special effects needed, and many other elements required to bring the story to the screen. This period involves lots of script analysis, and the final result will determine just how ambitious a given project is.

In the a case of the Rayden Valkyrie TV Pilot, the story is a wilderness-based adventure, so the locations are almost all exterior, natural settings, and there was no need for complex sets to be built such as fortresses or towns. This reduces a lot of pressure on budget needs, which can mean all the difference for an independent production.

Fundraising can take place in many ways, but for Rayden Valkyrie we raised part of the budget through a Kickstarter campaign and the rest through private investment. Despite hitting our Kickstarter goal, the total budget for this project is by production standards very tiny, so a little had to go a long way.

The building of a production team, casting, planning logistics, locations, and all the other details of readying for the production itself took several intensive months of work. Casting and the team capturing the image are both critical aspects, and they were approached very carefully to ensure that we had the best matches possible for each character and that we had top talent with top-level gear on the camera team to capture their performances.

The painstaking effort was well-worth it, as we ended up building a cast spearheaded by the likes of Brock O'Hurn and Sol Geirsdottir, who were incredible matches for the parts of Ragnar Stormbringer and Rayden Valkyrie. Similarly, the matches for characters like Hallad (John Wells), Gudrun (Katie Stewart), Kjarten (Dale Miller), Cartholo (Lyon Beckwith), Markos (Nathan Day) and many others were every bit as strong in matching character to actor/actress. We had to reach across the United States and even abroad (Sol and Marita Tathariel Svensson, who plays the witch Liana, are from Norway) to find the best cast possible.

On the camera side we found a sensational talent in Cory C. Warner, our cinematographer, and we put an amazing camera team in place around him (such as Steadicam operator Aaron Gantt and First Assistant Camera Jonathan Klepfer) to make sure that our camera unit had great chemistry and worked well together. As far as gear, we opted for the renowned Alexa, by Arri, with a full array of Zeiss lenses.

Kentucky is rich with natural settings, so after an extensive amount of scouting we found tremendous matches for the needs called for in the script. We kept in mind logistics at every step of the way, as we needed to be in places that worked visually and made sense in terms of using them, as a production has all kinds of needs, including meals, transportation, lodging, power access (a big one when filming on location in natural settings) and much more.

We set up a core area on a private farm with lots of woodland acreage and a house less than one mile away. A great number of the scenes could be shot on these properties, so we only had to add in a few more locations, which ended up involving the scenic Cumberland Falls (in Southern KY), Cove Spring Park (Frankfort, KY), and a cave on a private property near Cumberland Falls.

Our base area was just 25 minutes from the main hotel where our cast and crew from out of the area were staying. We set in place RV's, tents, trailers, porta potties, and provided a main spot for our set caterer. Each day involved making sure water and all manner of snacks were available, as well as gear being ready, preparations for costuming/makeup, and much more.

On the first couple of days, it is quite the maelstrom, but things always settle down once the crew and cast begin to come together as a cohesive unit.

Thanks to little interference from rain and great focus on part of the crew and cast, we did complete the production on schedule. The TV Pilot is now in post-production with the folks at Frozen Creek Studios. We have released our first teaser trailer and are beginning our outreach to potential homes for a full season. That is a full process in itself, and the aim is to have the full TV Pilot ready to exhibit this fall.

Developing a TV Pilot is far from a simple task, but we are poised to take the next step.

Books in the Series:

The Day Job is Murder:

The bad guys aren’t the only ones on his radar…

For Albany PD homicide detective Sean McKinley, catching killers is the easy part of his job. Working next to his beautiful partner, Sara Cain, is what’s difficult. It might have something to do with the fact that he’s fallen in love with her, though. Fortunately, she feels the same way about him. But she’s convinced they should just be friends.

If only there was some way to change her mind…

Vacation is Murder:

This wasn’t in the travel brochure…

There’s only so much relaxation two former detectives can handle—even if they’re on their honeymoon. With their recent fall into money, Sean and Sara McKinley should be living it up, enjoying the sun and beaches of Cancun. But heading into their third week they’ve had just about enough lying around.

When the husband of a couple they’ve befriended is kidnapped and held for ransom, it has the McKinleys putting their experience to use. As they set out in the unfamiliar landscape of paradise, the investigation will have them risking their lives to stop a killer.

Money is Murder:

It’s in the fine print…

Old Man Quinn left Sean more than his billions–he left him a murder to solve.

Inside the chest given to him from the executor of Quinn’s Will, Sean finds a key and implicit instruction that the contents are for his eyes only. After Sean discovers where the key fits, he finds another letter–Quinn wants a closed case reopened, and Sean is shocked to learn who the victim was.

As Sean and his wife, Sara, uncover clues, it leads them from the back rooms of Quinn’s corporation to the streets of New York City, but they will stop at nothing to get to the truth.

Politics is Murder:

There’s no time for a debate…

Sean and Sara’s popularity as a murder-solving duo has gained momentum. But it’s not until it comes time for a local television interview that they meet Reanne Mable and end up finding themselves involved with a high-profile investigation.

Reanne is the sister-in-law of Albany’s Mayor Davenport and his daughter, Halie, has gone missing from her university campus. With a desire to keep the matter out of the media spotlight, Davenport turns to Sean and Sara to find her. But with the police already investigating the matter, taking this case would pit them against their friends from the police department, including their former sergeant Jimmy Voigt.

As time moves on, though, the fate of the girl is not up for a vote, and the McKinleys set out to find out what really happened. With the mayor taking the heat for a recently passed zoning bylaw, is an enraged small business owner behind Halie’s disappearance? Or did she simply grow tired of living in her father’s limelight and run away?

To get the answers, Sean and Sara will need to use all the resources at their disposal and may have to call upon their good friend Jimmy for help, after all.

Family is Murder:

If only there were someone to clean up this mess…

Sean and Sara McKinley put out an ad for a maid, but they never expected Sara’s birth mother to apply—or at least that’s who the woman is claiming she is. While Sean is suspicious of her true identity and motive, Sara opens her heart to the woman. But when a dead body turns up soon after Sara’s supposed mother takes off without so much as a good-bye, they both start to question the truth.

Could they have welcomed a killer into their home and not even known it?

Shopping is Murder:

They find more than a bargain…

Black Friday should be all about shopping and discounts, but when Sean and Sara only have a few more items left to buy, screams fill the mall—and for good reason. A man has fallen to his death from the second level.

But what exactly happened isn’t that straightforward, and normally, Sean and Sara would leave this matter to the police, but the widow was a childhood friend of Sara’s. While the police are leaning toward the belief the man intentionally took the leap, the widow is adamant her husband would never jump and asks Sara for her help.

Despite the fact there is an unresolved past between the friends—in which Sara feels she let her down—Sara can’t turn her back on her now. Fueled by guilt and the need to find answers, Sara convinces Sean they should look into the man’s death.

But the answers aren’t all coming quickly. Mall security has dropped the ball and there’s no seeming motive for murder. To find out the truth will take unconventional means, a little undercover work, and the help of their friend Jimmy. And if it all comes together, they just might have this case wrapped up in time for the holidays. Maybe even with a pretty little bow.

Christmas is Murder:

Mistletoe and mischief…
Albany’s the perfect image of a winter wonderland, and Sean and Sara’s friend Jimmy is going to be Santa Claus for the upcoming Christmas parade. The trees and decorations have been selected and the gifts have been purchased. The season has truly cast its magical spell–until Sean and Sara’s neighbors die in a horrible house fire.

While the fire department ruled holiday-related hazards as the cause, Sara suspects there’s more to it. Her determination to find the truth has her and Sean toeing the line between what’s legal and what’s not.

As they sort out fact from fiction, the McKinleys make the final decision about whether or not they should open a private investigation firm.

Valentine’s Day is Murder:

Cupid’s arrow may have missed its mark…

Jimmy finally takes a vacation–and a chance on love–only to be abducted. His female companion originally thinks he had cold feet about their relationship, but Sean and Sara know there’s more to it. Jimmy isn’t the type to just up and disappear, let alone leave a lady stranded.

Setting out on their private jet, Sean and Sara reach the tropical paradise of Ocho Rios, Jamaica with sightseeing as the last thing on their minds.

With a gold coin being their initial tie to Jimmy’s kidnapper, Sean and Sara even speculate about the involvement of pirates. Yet as the hours pass, and there’s no word from Jimmy’s captors, Sean and Sara will need to figure out the real motive before it’s too late.

With help from their friend, Adam, back in Albany, the pieces come together and not a moment too soon.

Coffee is Murder:

A cup a day won’t kill you, but a few might.

Their first case as private investigators have Sean, Sara, and Jimmy neck-deep in coffee beans trying to find a killer. With their client certain that her mother was poisoned through her coffee of the month club, it has them setting out to Williamsburg, Virginia. But instead of approaching matters from the traditional standpoint, Sean and Sara brew a robust plot and stir Jimmy into the blend, all to get close to their top suspect and grind out the truth.

Going undercover at Tasty Beans, the coffee company, the three of them work to expose the culprit before anyone else dies.

Skiing is Murder:

They’re ready to hit the slopes when things go downhill…

Sean and Sara are supposed to have a relaxing vacation in Vail, but it all goes up in a puff of powder when there’s a suspicious death on the mountain. And the deceased is not just anyone; it’s Adrian Blackwell, a two-time Olympic skiing gold medalist.

Rumor has it Adrian died in a skiing accident, but he was too skilled for Sara to accept that as fact. But she doesn’t want to disappoint Sean by ruining his ski trip, even though she’s convinced Adrian was murdered and she’s itching to find the killer.

Sean has never been able to say no to Sara, but this time he plans to. However, all it takes is a call from their PI firm back in Albany to change his mind. A job’s come in to investigate Adrian’s death, and his agent is the one footing the bill, leaving Sean with more questions than answers.

Yet one major problem remains: their New York State PI licenses hold no legal authority in Colorado. They still can’t help but look into Adrian’s death on the sly, though. This case will definitely involve some underhanded tactics, all while trying to dodge the local police over the course of the investigation.
